“So what’s the way forward? What do you have in mind?” Kathie couldn’t help but ask her
best friend.
“I don’t know how. I don’t know where I’m going to start from. But Sophie’s birthday is in two weeks and I want to reunite her with her Daddy before then. I want Oscar to be
present for her 5th-year party.”
“I will talk to Sophie again today. I am going to try another approach and I am also going to tell her about the baby.”
“What about Oscar?” Kathie asked,
“I know
you mentioned you would see him when you get to California but aren’t you eager to hear from him? You have his contact, don’t you? And even if you don’t, I can always find it or ask Bessie for it.”
“No, not Bessie, please. I am jealous enough to know that she has a good relationship with Oscar. I don’t need her doing me favors.”
“Really?” Kathie said, resisting the urge not to burst into laughter.
“I don’t want to be indebted to her.”
“You know now is not the time to be proud?”
“I am not being proud. I just don’t want her doing me favors.”
“Besides, I don’t think it is wise to apologize and tell him about the baby over the phone. It will be much better to do it in person.”
“I am glad you are really trying to make amends and I know this decision is going to favor you.”
“Hopefully!” Vee said, folding her arms. “Everything is a mess.”
“Life generally is a mess. It is just how we choose to deal with it. But you are about to do the right thing and that makes me so happy. I bet you are going to feel better along the way. I am sure of that.”
“And I am sorry if you felt triggered by Sophie’s reaction.”
Vee shrugged, “At least it brought me back to my senses and made me realize how selfish I have been by depriving her of her Dad.”
“I just hope Oscar takes the news well. He isn’t done bonding with Sophic and I am bringing’ him an additional responsibility.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, babe. It takes two to make a baby. Left to me, I think he would. be excited. It is easier to want to take Sophie away from him when she is the only one but when the Babies are two, it is almost impossible to want to kick the father out of their lives.”
“Oh my G d,” Kathie’s eyes lit up. “What if you are expecting twins?”
“Please don’t! Your guesses are always right. Don’t put me in a very tight position. One baby
is fine.”
Kathie grinned, “But twins are really cool too. Sophie is a mixture of you and Oscar but it would be great to have a mini you and a mini Oscar!”
Vicky glared at Kathie, making her chuckle.
“I don’t know why you are all stressed up. I am sure Oscar wouldn’t mind.”
“I know you wish me well but please don’t put thoughts in my head. I am fine with one kid. I know it could be a girl but just like Sophie, I think I want a boy too. I don’t know What Oscar would prefer but I am sure he wouldn’t mind.”
“I wish you could feel the joy I feel in my heart. It feels so good to hear you speak about the baby this way. I am glad you are finally connecting with it.”
“I have been such a bitch! I really need to make it up to it.” She said, caressing her belly lovingly, even though it was still flat.
Kathie had a proud smile on her face.
“I need to go for a check-up too. You know, to make sure everything is going well. I haven’t been regular with my medications either. I really want to change my lifestyle.”
“I am glad you are making the right choice.”
“Hopefully!” She mumbled, then proceeded to her desk where her bag was. She reached for her phone and started punching in some numbers.
She saw Kathie staring suspiciously so she spoke. “I’ve always known his personal number- offhand. I don’t know if the number is still active.”
“You wanna call him?” Kathie asked even if it was obvious that that was what Vicky was about to do.
“I might start trying my luck from now,”
“D ! I’m liking this spirit. I am sure you had w s about him last night”
Victoria blushed, bringing the phone to her ear, even though she was not exactly sure of what she was going to say to him.
“You can’t be serious,” Kathie said with a smile on her face as she watched her best friend in one of her most vulnerable moments.
Victoria sniffled, wiping tears off the corner of her eyes with the tissue Kathie gave her earlier.
“I’m…..I’m…I’m such a… I am such an idiot.”
“Why?” Kathie asked, trying so hard not to laugh.
“The…..the….heartbeat….” She started saying, but her s bs overtook her voice.
“Yeah, the baby’s heartbeat. What about it?”
“I….oh my g …” Vee continued crying, this time around she buried her face in her palm.
With a grateful smile on her face, Kathie gave Victoria’s shoulder a light squeeze. This time around, she chose to respect Vicky’s moment and give her some time alone to calm down.
Kathie gave her another tissue to wipe her tears.
“Are you good to talk now? What is making you so emotional? You have been in tears since. we came back from the examination room.” Kathie said, pretending not to understand what was going on.
“Are you making fun of me?” She looked into Kathie’s eyes.
“Of course not. You know I can’t do that. I just want to know what is going on in your head.”
“Hearing the baby’s heartbeat made me realize how selfish and foolish I have been. I can’t believe I was really considering getting rid of it. Even in worse conditions when I had not one, I was determined to keep Sophie and now that I am pregnant again with people who love me like you, Lara, and Sophie, I can’t believe I chose the negative path. I feel so terrible. I never for once acknowledged this baby in my belly, I wish there was a way I could apologize. I have been so terrible to it.” She sniffled, trying her best not to cry again.
“Realizing your mistakes and doing the right thing is the best form of forgiveness you can ever give yourself.”
“I know. But I still feel terrible. I feel so ashamed and disgusted with myself.”
“Feeling that way should give you more motivation to fight harder for those you love.”
Victoria nodded.
“Congratulations, my friend. I am not sure if I have ever said that to you since we got to know about this pregnancy.”
“Don’t congratulate me yet. I am a terrible mother.”
Kathie chuckled. “I am not going to hear the end of this right?”
“But I am telling the truth.”
Kathie reached for Vicky’s hand, giving it a light squeeze. “We all make mistakes. We all make terrible decisions at some point in our lives, and we all don’t have our s t all figured out but what matters is the ability to get back on the right track and it takes so much courage to do so.”
“You have been really amazing with Sophie. And even though you act like you don’t give two f s about men, I know you have always wanted to have a family of your own and I am sure this baby is going to do that. He is definitely going to unite you all.”
“Do you think Oscar will be cool with it? I thought his number would still be active, unfortunately, it is not. Not that I had an idea of what I would have said to him if it rang and he eventually picked up.”
“I understand you but if you truly want to talk to him then maybe you should ask Bessie for his contact. Five years is a long time. It is normal for that number not to be active due to different reasons.”
“No, I don’t want to involve Bessie in my private business. I still don’t know what to say over the phone so it is best that I see him in person. I will talk to Philip when he shows up at work. I will let him know that there is no need to extend the date so I should be seeing Oscar by the weekend. Hopefully.”
