Giving them a look of admiration, Lena said, “He had never imagined that he would find a mate and then he would have pups. You have given him his world. I don’t think he would ever tire.”
River laughed. She leaned against the tree’s trunk. “But I do feel like a milk bag to them, which is unfair. I gave birth to both of them and they look just like their father?” she complained. “Do you know what was their first word? Dada!” She pursed her l*ips and shook her head. “I was so angry with all of them that I threw them out of my room for an hour. And would you believe that they-” she pointed at the trio. “They were only too happy!” Lena laughed. “You are too much River.”
“This feels like a mutiny? she huffed.
Lena picked up a tuna sandwich. Taking a bite she said, “Some council members are demanding that Hawk be named the heir of the Crescent Alpha as soon as possible. Even the Elders want it.”
With a crease on her forehead, River said, “Why?” She wondered what the hurry was.
Lena shrugged. “Maybe they want to feel secure that Crescent Pack has an heir. I heard one of the Elders demanding that as soon as Hawk is five years old, he be h*anded to the Crescent Pack and that his education should be completed here. They want to watch their Alpha grow in front of them.”
“That’s ridiculous!” River said, horror washing over her. She couldn’t even think of separating her pups so soon. “Rivei? Luna said as if trying to explain their viewpoint. “You have to understand that they want Hawk to learn about the pack and its people and their ways. They also have a point.”
A shudder ran down her body. She dismissed the whole idea. “We will think about it when the time comes!” She wasn’t going to separate her pups so soon.
Lena let out a rough exhale. “I understand.” There was silence between the friends. After a while she said, “Where do you plan to celebrate their first birthday? It is only a week away.”
“At the Dark Moon pack obviously,” River replied.
Lena remained quiet for a second as if contemplating her answer. “River, the pack members want to celebrate Hawk’s birthday over here.”
River gritted her teeth and she threw down the bottle of water she was holding in her h*and. “This is getting much too much! Why are pack members doing this? They can’t discriminate between my pups! I love them both and I won’t let them celebrate their birthdays separately. Heck, Hunter won’t allow it.”
“I know River!” Lena cried. “But as your Beta I have to tell you what the pack members want. They are just too eager and impatient to be with Hawk. They want to see him grow in front of their eyes. They are right in their demand because you were not brought up the way they wanted it to be. It was Hector who got all the attention even though he didn’t deserve it. Now they want to give every attention to the right heir. Why don’t you understand?”
“I don’t want to understand anything!” River snapped.
Hunter’s brows furrowed when he saw River’s angry face. He gave the boys to the nanny and hurried to her. “River,” he said, darting his eyes at Lena. “What is the matter? You look… pissed.”
She clenched her jaws. “It’s nothing. Just some pack issue.” She didn’t want to talk about this problem with him because she knew that he would blow his lid. Hunter was fiercely protective about his pups. “Lena?” Hunter directed the question at her.
Lena bit her bottom l*ip and lowered her face. “It’s nothing…” she said. She didn’t want to go against River who was not only her friend, but also her Alpha.
“You have to tell me,” Hunter said, releasing a bit of his Alpha aura.
Lena winced.
“Stop it, Hunter!” River snapped.
“Then tell me what it is that is eating you on the inside!” he demanded.
“My pack wants to celebrate Hawk’s birthday here,” she grunted. “As if I will allow it.”
Hunter became quiet, his brows furrowing into a straight line. Silence hung in the air with thick tension. After a while he said, “How about we celebrate their birthdays in the afternoon at the Crescent Moon pack and then at night at the Dark Moon pack?”
“Oh!” River rasped. “That’s a great idea!”
Lena chuckled. “See? Problem solved!”
The entire Dark Moon pack was in a frenzy of celebrating Arthur and Hawk’s birthday. The boys were a year old. Right from the morning, gifts from all the pack members had started arriving even though River had requested no gifts.
The most surprising gift was from Falcon, Alpha of the Demon City. He had sent two Arabian horses from his stable. The moment the boys saw them, they squealed and tried to jump at them from their father’s arms. Had it not been Hunter’s powerful arms, the boys would have already been hanging from the horses’ n*ecks. “Goddess!” Hunter said, shocked. “These boys are strong!”
River chuckled. “They are the sons of two Alphas,” she said in a proud voice as if stating a fact. “Dada!” Arthur squealed. “Wanna-” He pointed at the black stallion.
“Dada!” It was Hawk’s chance to squeal. “Wanna—” He also pointed to the black stallion. Both of them ignored the white stallion with a black spot on his head.
Hunter whimpered at the same choice of both his kids. He looked at River for help but she just smiled and shrugged. “Had they called me ‘mama’, I would have helped them. But all they ever say is ‘dada’. So, don’t even think I will help you with that.”
“Oh, come on, River!” he whined. “They will fight over the black one! I can’t handle their fights!”
“I don’t care,” she simply replied and turned to leave. “Deal with them.” As she turned, she saw Mia coming along with her nine-month-old son on her h*ip followed by Elijah who was with their two daughters, both sitting on each of his shoulders.
