“Ohhhh! My lovelies!” River crooned them. “Gods, I love them so much!” She rushed to Elijah to grab one of his daughters. She took Lily who started jumping up and down, seeing her favorite aunt, as Millie continued to sit on her father and giggle.
All at once, Mia’s son, Ryan, said, “Dada!” He pointed at the black stallion and said something incomprehensible, sure that he was understood.
River barked a laugh. “This is going to be so interesting!”
“Why?” Mia said, totally irritated that all her pups never once called her mama.
“We have three boys wanting the same stallion!” she laughed.
Hunter looked at his nephew and sighed, shaking his head. “Come one, Mia,” Hunter said. “You have to help me.”
“Why should I help these treacherous pups?” She sided with River.
Hunter gritted, “I think I will just paint that white one black!”
Elijah came to him and clasped his shoulder. “I can understand your dilemma, Hunter.” He winked. “These girls are just jealous.”
Hunter’s face split into a grin. “That’s right!”
That afternoon, the whole pack shimmered with all that was silver and gold. Every and each street was buzzing with laughter, activity and fun. Each and every pack member was invited for lunch at the castle’s gardens. River and Hunter stood under a canopy of blue and white gauzy sheets, each holding one boy. Arthur was with Hunter while Hawk was with River. The pack members would come and k*iss Arthur’s h*and acknowledging him as the future Alpha of the pack. The child was extremely patient as he studied the pack members with his sharp eyes.
Some werewolves from the Crescent pack were also invited. They spread gifts for Arthur on the dais and River gasped when she saw what the gifts were. They were bricks of gold.
“This wasn’t necessary!” River said as she looked at the sheer display of wealth. The Crescent pack members were getting richer by the day because of all the investments they were doing in the human world. “Nothing is necessary,” Lena said as she hugged River. “It’s just a gesture of love.” Then she took Hawn in her arms and said, “For you little one, the whole pack awaits.”
Hawk tilted his head and suddenly grabbed Lena’s hair. “Dada!”
After the guests had left, Hunter and River were too tired. They took an hour’s nap and headed straight to the Crescent pack. It was 7 PM by the time they reached there with the twins. And when they arrived at the pack, River’s m*outh dropped to the floor as she gawked at the sheer decoration the pack members had done for Hawk. The whole place was converted into a fairy land. There were millions of lights on the trees and the bushes and even small plants weren’t spared. Every house had some or the other lights in their compound. River was awed. She realized for the first time how much her pack members loved Hawk and were so eager to see him grow in front of them. But she wasn’t ready to separate her pups. She had to do something about it and soon nip the thought in the bud.
The council members came to welcome the Alpha family. They all went to the pack house that could house every pack member. Both Arthur and Hawk were made to cut the cake amidst the cheery atmosphere. This time as River and Hunter stood on a dais, every pack member came and k*issed Hawk’s h*and. The pup watched them all with rapt attention without crying or pulling his h*and away.
Hunter was pretty surprised by his pups’ behavior but he was also proud that his sons were accepting their destiny right from such an early age. Surprisingly both of them hadn’t tired at all. They were a bundle of boundless energy and he doted on them to the extent that he wanted to spoil them. But River was always pulling his strings. About a hundred feet away, across the lake that overlooked the pack, a man in a dark hoodie stood. He was watching the party with his binoculars. As the party progressed, he saw Hawk and Arthur in their parents’ lap.
“Time has come for my revenge, River,” he muttered and lowered his binoculars. He drew in a long puff from his cigarette and blew out smoke. He watched the party from this side of the lake for a while more and then walked away in the darkness.
Hunter and River stayed on for the night after dinner because River had to address the council meeting. Although there were other issues that were pending, she knew that the most pressing issue would be about Hawk. That night River couldn’t sleep well. The pups were h*anded over to the nannies where they slept soon after she had b*reast fed them.
She tossed and turned in her bed. She would snuggle close to Hunter and get wrapped in his arms but then she would remove his arms and get up to pace the room or simply watch outside the window from her room. Her gaze went to the celebrations the pack members were still having down in the streets. People were dancing and singing loudly. She chuckled when she saw them bursting fire crackers at the lake side. There was a lot of enthusiasm amongst her pack members. As an Alpha, she could command them, but then she knew that some would have resentments.
She lifted the window’s pane and a cool breeze drifted through, lifting her hair. She closed her eyes as she let the breeze cool her skin and her agitated mind.
An arm wrapped around her shoulder. “River?” His sleepy voice came as he rested his head over her head and tugged her closer to his warm c*hest. “What’s it, love? Come to bed”
She placed her h*ands on his forearm as she leaned against his c*hest and looked out at the festivities. “They are all so excited,” she said in a soft voice.
“They are…” he sighed, his gaze drifting to the fire crackers bursting across the lake. “But I am feeling uncomfortable…” she added.
“River? Hunter said. “There are many decisions that one has to take and not all decisions are going to make you popular. You have to be selfish sometimes and learn to refuse people and also refuse arm-twisting, otherwise they will think that they can manipulate you to whatever level they like and take advantage.” He turned her to look at him. Curling his f*ingers beneath her chin, he lifted her face so that she looked in his eyes. “Don’t let them twist your arm. Stand on your ground. I won’t let my one-year-old stay alone over here. I can’t split my family. Hawk is too young and he needs the affection of his mother and father.”
“What if they pressure me?” she said as a tear slid down her eye.
He k*issed away the tear. “They will pressure you. Expect that, but have your answers ready. I will be sitting in that meeting and if every tactic fails, I know exactly how to tame them.”
River chuckled through her heavy heart. “I trust you with that, but I don’t want you to become the villain of the pack after all that you’ve done for them.”
“I won’t stop being a villain if that makes me a hero of my family,” he said, staring in her eyes intensely. “My pups are my priority and so is the love of my life”
“Oh Hunter!” she sighed and encased him in his embrace. “What would I do without you?”
He wrapped his arms around her. “Think of all the answers and then think of all the questions they can ask or throw at you. You will find all your answers once you step in their shoes.”
“Hmm…” she nodded. He always gave her very valuable advice.
