Hunter picked her up and carried her back to the bed where he made her lie down on his body. She curled over him and went off to sleep when he covered her with the comforter.
She woke up the next morning on his warm b*ody and semi h*ard c*ock. A smile curved her l*ips up when she saw that he was still sleeping. “Wolf!” she mumbled and k*issed his c*hest.
Carefully, so as not to awake him, she slipped down and went to the nursery to check on her pups. Arthur was stirring up. She went to feed him and he slept while drinking milk. Hawk was still sleeping, so she just picked him up and fed him. He immediately started s*uckling in his sleep. She stroked his soft dark hair and murmured, “Mamma won’t let you separate her from the family.” Hawk opened his blue eyes, looked at her sleepily and then went off to sleep.
When she returned, she went to the bathroom to get ready. The meeting was supposed to be held at 10 AM. She opened her mind link and called Lena to discuss every other agenda that was there.
Lena produced the papers to her on the dining table where she was having breakfast. Wearing black leather p*ants and a white silk blouse, River gave a regal aura. Lena couldn’t help admiring her. “Motherhood suits you, Alpha River,” she complimented.
River chortled. “When are you getting married, my dear Beta? It seems we have to find a match for you soon.” Lena blushed so heavily that for the first time, River was surprised. Lena never really blushed that h*ard in her life. Ever. River made a mental note on finding out the reason.
Lena ignored her comment and started to discuss the matters at h*and. River went through every file one by one as Lena filled her with details. They had spotted rogues on the east boundary of the pack which was concerning. “We took down two rogues, but there were more of them. I don’t know where they have suddenly come from! They weren’t here for the past year and things were peaceful.”
A crease formed in between her brows. “Rogues?”
“Yes!” Lena shook her head. “And they seem to be in large numbers. We called other packs to inform them and also warn them about the situation, but interestingly none of the packs had heard about this group of rogues.” River stared at the pictures of the two dead rogues in front of her. It was pretty strange. How was it possible that a large number like this would attack only on her pack? This could be a regular coincidence? Right? She took a deep breath in, closing the folder. “What about the Lycans that are helping us in patrolling?”
“They are still here,” Lena said. “But when these rogues attacked our patrolling party, the Lycans weren’t over there. They had gone to the western boundary. Thankfully, we had a big pack of wolves at that time and they were able to chase the rogues. Only these two were caught. They tried to escape and fought with our pack warriors. However, they couldn’t match them and were taken down. I am afraid that more will come back.”
“They should have been captured,” River growled. “And we have to be readier than ever!”
Lena winced. “They tried to capture at least one of them, but both the rogues went mad. The warriors couldn’t do much other than to k*ill them!”
River clenched her teeth. “Okay, next time make sure you catch them, or at least one of them!”
“We will, Alpha,” Lena said, bowing to her.
Hunter had come by then. He nodded at Lena after giving a morning k*iss to his wife. It was 9:30 AM. He hurried with his breakfast. After that he accompanied River to the council meeting.
The council was eagerly waiting for River at the pack house. The meeting was being held in the conference room on the second floor where most of the offices were.
River arrived with Hunter exactly at 10 AM and found that all of them were in full attendance. She took a silent deep breath in and went to sit on a chair at the head of the table. Hunter sat on her right while Lena sat on her left. All the members stood up and bowed their heads before taking their seats back.
The meeting started with reports on various businesses that the pack was in. Annual reports were submitted. Complaints were made. Solutions were heard. It was at the end of the usual reports that one of the council members, George, who was going to retire the next year and take up the status of Elders, said, “I am sure that Beta Lena has already appraised you of our wishes, Alpha River.”
River tensed and braced herself for what was to come. She could feel Hunter tensing beside her. Hunter hadn’t spoken a word about the reports or her annual meet. As a matter of fact, even though as her husband he was allowed to join the meeting any time he liked, he was under no obligation to join it. The meetings were usually conducted without him, but this time he made sure that he was going to be there.
There was no point in feigning ignorance. “Yes, she has,” River replied to him and to all the members.
George clasped his h*ands in his lap and shifted in his seat. River’s clipped answer was not what he was expecting. “Then let me brief you about it.”
River wanted him to stop, because she knew the details, but if she did that, she would be called judgmental. Moreover, it was possible that the council would accuse Lena for not relating the entire information correctly. She had to hear what George had to say.
George exhaled roughly. “Alpha River, you had announced that Hawk would become the Alpha of the Crescent pack when he grew up. We are all very jubilant about it. However, we would like Hawk to come and stay in the Crescent pack when he is five years and when his primary education begins. We all wish to see him in front of us all the time so that he becomes the perfect Alpha for us.”
River crossed her arms against her c*hest. She studied all the members in the meeting silently as George was speaking. She sensed their excitement. She became quiet after George’s words. Very carefully, she chose her words. “I am sorry but what do you mean by ‘perfect Alpha’?”
George was stunned by her question and his m*outh opened a little, but he controlled his emotion. “I mean that he would be a perfect Alpha for the Crescent pack.”
“So you mean to say that both Hunter and I can’t raise a perfect Alpha on our own even though both of us are Alphas?”
“No, Alpha River!” George responded quickly. “You both will raise good kids. It’s just that the Elders want Hawk to come and stay in the Crescent pack. They are too eager to see their real Alpha grow in front of their eyes. After all, Hawk is the grandson of Alpha Lowell.”
“And you know what happened to me after Alpha Lowell was k*illed?” River countered. There were silent and guilty looks exchanges amongst the members.
“After my father died, no one even tried to find out about his daughter even though she was living right under your nose!” River snapped. “I was raised by the worst possible omegas of the pack who were paid to ensure that my life was miserable at all times. I had one moment of happiness when Alpha’s son, Hector turned out to be my mate. But-” she was out of breath as old anger crept in her heart. “But he too rejected me.” She looked away from all of them. “I haven’t forgotten those days George and I will never forget them.” When she turned her eyes back on him, she found him with a pale blush. “So as a mother, I will not allow my child to be separated from me.”
There was uneasiness in the air as the council members looked at each other. Several moments passed in silence that was so thick that it could be cut by a knife.
“Alpha River” another council member, Yeti, got up. “We all understand that you have had issues when you were young.”
“No!” River interjected. “These issues were there only a year and half back. Remember? So if you are saying that I have grown old in one year, then yes, I have had issues when I was young”
