“I will,” she said in a clipped voice. She shifted on her feet and her gaze went to the note in Hunter’s h*and and then to Elijah.
“The kidnapper has said that Hawk is not in the werewolf packs. He has taken him to the human world,” Elijah informed.
“Oh!” Lena was shocked. “Then we better mobilize our people over there!” Saying that she quickly left the main room.
Hunter sat down on the sofa with the photos in his lap and the note that was with them. He went over the words again and again and also what Elijah had said. Someone wanted to punish River and punish her badly. They didn’t think even once to attack her or Hunter because they were sure that River and Hunter were just too powerful. But they kidnapped his pup because Hawk was a harmless little soul and because they knew that by kidnapping him, they had hit a very sensitive chord.
He had nothing else to do rather than wait for the next call from the kidnapper. Asher was already with his IT team, monitoring the calls. Along with the Crescent pack members, the team had more brains. “I want all of us to meet in the meeting room in an hour,” he said before leaving to go back to River.
Her condition was worrying the hell out of him. His wife had always been so brave and dealt with the situation head-on, but now- it was like she had given up completely. She just didn’t want to come out of the shock. She hadn’t slept ever since they had heard the news.
When he reached the room, he saw that the nurse was cajoling her to have some food, but she wasn’t eating it. As soon as the nurse saw him, she got up on her feet and lowered her head. “She is not responding, Alpha Hunter.”
“Call the doctor,” Hunter growled. The nurse bowed and left quickly. He sat down beside her. Arthur was not comfortable in her grasp and he had started to cry a little. “Can I take him?” he asked her, but there was no response. He tried to take Arthur forcibly from River, but her grasp t*ightened. She peeled her l*ips back and snarled at him, her motherly instinct in full mode. “River!” Hunter was surprised, jerking his head back. “Arthur wants to sleep. Leave him” But she snarled dangerously at him as if challenging him to come and pluck her child from her lap. He became quiet.
The doctor arrived a few minutes later and by that time, Hunter decided to stay away from her. The last thing he wanted was her to become crazy. “She hasn’t slept for a long time, doctor,” he said, stabbing his f*ingers in hair. The doctor sighed. “If you like I can give her a sedative. It will relax her muscles.”
Hunter studied River. She had dark circles beneath her eyes. Her complexion was pallid and there was craziness in her eyes as she watched blank space in front of her. “Yes, you can do that. How long will she remain sedated?”
“For the whole day.”
Hunter let out a ragged breath. “Okay, do that.” Then he addressed the nurse behind him. “Stay with her as long as she is sedated, okay?”
“Yes Alpha.”
The doctor gave River the sedative and River didn’t even react to it, sitting like a statue. Hunter blinked his tears away. He waited for her to show the signs of sedation. When her eyes drooped, her limbs loosened. He sat behind her and moved her weight over his c*hest. River was so doped that she didn’t protest. He wrapped his arms around her and Arthur. Soon, she closed her eyes and went off to deep sleep. Her hold on Arthur loosened and he took Arthur from her lap.
The little boy crawled in his father’s lap and clung to him, clearly very scared. He cried and cried and snuggled in his father’s lap as if seeking protection. Guilt and love and helplessness wrenched Hunter’s heart. “I am so sorry, pup,” he said, trying to hide his tears, but they just wouldn’t stop.
Faria had come and helped River lie down as Hunter crooned his little pup. Once River was settled, Faria took Arthur from him. “It is nice that we have already introduced him to other food,” she said. “Please don’t worry, Alpha Hunter” she said. “I will take care care of him. Just go and bring Hawk back.”
Hunter k*issed Faria’s temple. She was so dedicated to River right from the beginning that his respect for her increased. “I will unearth hell also to find my pup, Faria,” he said in a raspy voice.
A knock at the door sounded. The door opened and Asher walked in. “You have to come here quickly.” Hunter hurried downstairs with Asher. “The kidnapper has called again and this time he wants to speak with you.” Hunter rushed to where Elijah was standing by the phone. Elijah said, “The kidnapper just called. He will call again in fifteen minutes and has demanded to speak with you.”
Hunter nodded as he stood next to the phone, waiting for the call. Every minute stretched like eternity and he thought he would lose. He began pacing the main room. Anxiety and anticipation were high. Asher had already left and had gone to his station where he was going to monitor the call from.
Exactly after fifteen minutes, the phone began to ring. Hunter dashed to it and let it ring for two times before picking it up. “Hello!” he rasped.
“Hunter,” the voice said in a way as if he or she already knew who he was. “It’s been a long time since we have spoken.”
Hunter’s mind raced to every damn acquaintance that he had in the past who was also his enemy. “Who are you?” he asked in a low, feral voice.
The man on the other side laughed. “It is too early to tell you that, but here’s my condition.”
Hunter’s heart stopped as he clenched his jaw, his Lycan wanting to come out and k*ill whosoever was on the other side. He remained silent.
After a long silence, the man said, “Come to the nearest human town all alone. From there take a flight to Portland. Once you reach there, I will call you but on River’s cell phone. So bring her cell phone.”
“Portland?” Hunter was shocked to know that the kidnapper has reached Portland. The nearest human town to their pack was Idaho Falls. “I will be there sooner than you can imagine,” he gritted.
The caller laughed with a sinister edge and disconnected.
Leaving River in the safe custody of Faria and others in the pack, Hunter rushed to Portland along with his team that consisted of Elijah, Asher, Lena and a mix of warriors from Crescent pack as well Dark Moon pack. As for Falcon, they didn’t know what to do.
“I know a way by which we can reach the forests,” said Falcon. “We will be running through the deep interiors of YellowStone and then follow that trail but only at night.”
“What if someone sees you?” Hunter said, his brows furrowed at the idea.
“Those parts of the forest are inhabited by wild beasts. There won’t be any spotting of humans,” Falcon explained or rather hoped.
“No, it is too dangerous, Falcon,” Lena said. “At this time of the year, you have human camping and if they discover you all, it would be a disaster.”
