“We are going to wear masks, just so that no one can recognize us, so don’t worry’’ Falcon argued. He really wanted to go with Hunter and was trying to figure out every possibility.
“I have run in that area,” Asher chimed in. “But very long back, when we were just pups. That part is pretty secluded and you will barely find humans venturing.”
Hunter took a deep breath in. “There is another option. You can run through the mountain ranges that line Yellowstone. There is a trail which would lead to the forests, straight to Oregon.”
“Fair enough,” Falcon rasped. “I think that is the best idea. There wouldn’t be any humans in the ranges.”
“But will you be able to reach it in time?” Hunter said, too worried that it was a long journey on foot. Falcon chuckled. “We might reach before your flights!”
When all was planned out, the werewolves and the Lycans drove to the nearest town from where they would take the flight to Portland, while Falcon and his team took to the mountain ranges.
In the flight, everyone was tense. There were too many humans around and too many emotions swirling in their minds. Hunter was controlling his Lycan to the level that he was becoming restless. His beast wanted to run free. It was so stifling. The moment he t*ouched land, he was sure that his Lycan would take over.
They reached Portland and took up a cottage that was located on the edge of the city. They wanted to stay near the woods so that all of them could go out for a run. It was 11 PM when they reached the cottage they had booked.
As soon as the owner h*anded them the keys of the cottage, they all ran to the woods and broke free from their human form. It was exhilarating and satisfying to give in to their beast. When they returned, they found Falcon and his team waiting for them.
Hunter was so overwhelmed that he clasped falcon’s forearms in the manly gesture of thanks. Falcon placed his h*ands on Hunter’s shoulders and said, “We were slightly late, Alpha Hunter, but it was mainly due to weather. And—” he glanced at Lena. “We didn’t find any humans.”
Lena chuckled. “I am glad, but you also have to return!”
“We will follow the same trail,” he shrugged. “There were a few bears we encountered but nothing to worry about because we tackled them easily” Falcon remembered how a male bear had attacked his team and they had to wrestle him and defeat him rather than k*illing him because if they had k*illed him, chances were that the humans would have spotted it. Then they encountered a female bear who was protecting her cubs. She charged at them and they had to change their path a little to mislead her so that she and her pups remained safe.
“That’s impressive,” Hunter commented.
Falcon opened his jaws that exposed his pointy teeth. “Thank you, Alpha Hunter. Anything for you.”
They all went to their respective rooms and dorms and then the wait began. It was as if they were in the wild. They didn’t know who they had to contact or who would contact them, but they had to wait. Hunter was extremely tired, but he couldn’t wink an eye. He needed to stay awake in case the kidnapper contacted. He was afraid that if he slept, he would miss it.
“Coffee?” Lena came with a large mug of coffee for him.
He took it. “Thanks. I needed it,” he sighed as he leaned over the railing of the balcony of his room. His eyes bore into the darkness that was beyond the forest. He sipped coffee from his mug hoping that it would keep him awake. “Where are the rest?” he asked absentmindedly.
“Most are in their beds and sleeping, but some of us just can’t sleep,” Lena replied. There was a long silence between them as the two didn’t know what else to speak. After a while, Lena said, “Alpha Hunter, I am sorry…” Hunter turned his head over his shoulder. “What for?”
She lowered her head and stared into her coffee mug. After a shaky breath she said, “I was the one who was pushing River into getting Hawk to the Crescent Moon pack.” She gulped down her guilt associated emotions. “I was so confident about the way I was leading the pack as a Beta that I never imagined this kind of a situation would arrive.” She shook her head. “I am so sorry-” She couldn’t speak further as her voice turned hoarse. Many moments later, she finally found her voice. “I am so sorry that I couldn’t protect Hawk. How it all happened is still mystery to me. When I reach the pack, I am going to unearth the whole thing.”
“Lena, it’s an unfortunate incident. While I am angry at you for not keeping security t*ighter, none of us would have anticipated what was to come,” Hunter said, gazing back at the darkness. “Do you suspect that someone on the inside helped the kidnapper?”
“It is possible,” Lena replied, shaking her head. “We can’t rule out that possibility.”
“Who can it be?” he asked.
They heard the balcony door opening. Elijah entered. Lena hadn’t sipped her coffee, so she offered it to him. He took it and exhaled roughly.
“Who could it be?” Hunter repeated his question.
“I don’t know…” Lena said. “It could be anyone from an omega to the Elders.”
“Elders?” Hunter jerked his head back.
She shrugged. “Well, didn’t you see how they were at the council meeting? Elders want this. Elders want that…” her voice drawled. “Nonsense!” she spat.
Hunter couldn’t help chuckling. “We have to keep our eyes open.” At the same time, he wondered how would the kidnapper know where they are residing unless he has access to inside information. “Who all have you told as to where we are going?” he asked her.
“Oh! Several people,” she said. “Why?”
Hunter’s hackles raised. “Call Asher,” he said to Elijah. When Asher came, Hunter instructed him, “I want your IT team to keep an eye on every person’s mail and messages in the Crescent pack.”
“What? Why?” Asher was aghast.
“Just do as I say!” Hunter growled.
“Okay!” Asher wasn’t comfortable with this. “You know that I have to plant a virus in everyone’s digital device out there to pull the information out, right?”
“Do whatever you have to, but I want this done in the next two hours!”
“Okay!” Asher put two f*ingers on his f*inger to salute his Alpha and rushed out to instruct his IT team. “That’s a dangerous game you are playing,” Lena remarked. “What if the Elders come to know about it?”
“Asher is too intelligent. He will figure out a way to handle the situation,” Hunter grunted. His gaze went back to the woods in front of him. The place was very still. Not a leaf moved. “Elijah,” he said as he scanned the area. “Would you like to inspect those woods?” He sipped his coffee.
Elijah’s brows were set in a straight line as his eyes went to the woods. “Is it okay if I take Falcon with me?”
“I will come with you,” Lena offered.
“No, you don’t go,” Hunter opposed her. “But you can take Falcon.”
