Along with Falcon, Elijah inspected the woods that were in front of the balcony of Hunter’s room. It was too dark but they had enhanced vision.
Elijah opened his mind link with Hunter. ‘There is no one here,’ he said as he whipped his head around to see signs of an intruder. ‘But there are—’ he bent down and t*ouched the grass beneath him. ‘The tall reeds are bent. It could be an animal.’ He rubbed the grass blades between his f*ingers and sniffed it. ‘No wait! This is the smell of a human.’
‘What?’ Hunter was so shocked that he climbed the rail of the balcony.
“What are you doing, Alpha Hunter?” Lena jerked her head back, but before she could react, Hunter had landed on the ground on his four paws.
He dashed to the woods where Elijah was and saw that he was still with Falcon. ‘Follow the scent,’ he ordered through his mind link.
“That wasn’t the smell of a human,” Falcon grunted. “That was the smell of a shifter!”
“He’s right,” Elijah nodded. He jumped in the air and shifted.
Hunter was clearly too shocked. If that was the smell of a shifter, it meant that one of the werewolves was keeping a close tab on their activities. But who was it? The smell was still fresh in the air and so that meant that the shifter was close-by. They followed the smell till they reached a lake and then the scent disappeared. The shifter must have jumped in the lake. Elijah and Hunter shifted and came to stand next to Falcon, feeling helpless. “There is something strange about the smell, Alpha Hunter? Falcon remarked as they started back to the cottage. “What is so strange?” Hunter asked because there was nothing odd other than the fact that they were being spied upon by a shifter.
“Amongst all the smells that this particular shifter has, I think I also smelled a whiff of the scent associated with Ella,” Falcon replied as if unsure.
Hunter stopped in his tracks. “Ella?” His brows furrowed. “Alpha Maxim’s sister?”
Falcon nodded. “But I may be wrong because that scent is pretty faint. Besides, that earthy scent is very common amongst shifters.”
Hunter stood there for a minute, pondering over Falcon’s words and then they returned to the cottage.
“What did you all hunt for?” Lena asked, h*anding them coffee. Falcon didn’t want it, so he went upstairs to his room.
“Lena,” Hunter said as he took another mug of coffee. “There was a shifter spying on us and when we chased it, he ran so fast that he escaped, but now Falcon is saying that the shifter possesses the earthy scent of Ella. Do you remember Ella?”
“Of course,” she said. “How can one ever forget that b*itch? She had come back from your pack and behaved like she owned the Crescent pack. My father used to relate about her bossy attitude.”
“Tell me more about her,” Hunter said and sat down. He glanced at Elijah who walked out of the room and went to sleep. They were all very tired, but Hunter was fighting his exhaustion. Every time his son’s face flashed in his mind, he would wonder what his condition would be.
Lena started right from the beginning about Ella. Hunter knew most of it but he was still listening to Lena. It was possible that he caught some clue. Unfortunately, there was nothing new that she added. It was 4 Am and Lena also went to her room to catch up on her sleep, leaving Hunter alone. He lied down on the couch and didn’t know when sleep took over. He bolted up when Asher called him. “Alpha Hunter!”
Hunter rubbed his eyes as Asher dashed to him. He was with his laptop. Hunter’s gaze went to the clock. It was 8 AM. Smell of freshly baked cookies and cake wafted in the room which meant that the humans who owned the cottage had come to cook. It was in their package that they would be served with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
“Alpha Hunter,” Asher said. “I have found something really crazy.” He pointed at the numbers and lines and started explaining stuff.
As and as he explained, Hunter’s rage only increased. “Arrange a call with George,” he growled after Asher finished his report.
The two human girls who had come to prepare the breakfast set the food on in the dining hall. After giving flirtatious glances at all the handsome men they had seen for the first time, they reluctantly left. And as soon as they left, the phone rang.
Elijah dashed to pick it up as Hunter was talking with George. He m*outhed to Hunter, ‘Kidnapper’. Hunter disconnected the call with George and in a flash of a second was standing next to Elijah with the phone in his h*and.
“Alpha Hunter,” the kidnapper’s hoarse voice came. “I hope you haven’t involved the police in it.”
“No,” Hunter said in a stern voice, but it was evident that the kidnapper knew that the police weren’t involved. “How is my pup?”
“Your pup is doing well,” he said lazily. “So should we begin negotiations?”
That was a trick question because if the kidnapper was a human, he would have been surprised by the word ‘pup’. Hunter was now sure that the kidnapper was a shifter. A muscle feathered in his jaw. “Yes.”
“So my rules of the game are very simple,” the kidnapper said. “If you want to see your pup again, you have to ask your wife, River, to give up her claim to the Crescent pack.”
“Why?” Hunter’s fists clenched into t*ight balls.
“You don’t get to ask questions, Hunter? the modulated voice came. “You only have to follow what I say. In the next twelve hours, I want to hear that River has given up her claim of the pack. If this doesn’t happen, you will never see Hawk again.”
“If anything happens to Hawk,” Hunter growled menacingly. “I will drag you from the depths of hell and rip you, limb by limb and then some more.”
There was an element of surprise and then the kidnapper barked a laughter. “I have to say that you are a daring wolf. What if Hawk never comes back to you?”
“What if you never see another light of the day?”
The kidnapper got angry. “Shut up, Hunter!” he shouted. “Just do as I am saying. I want River to step down.”
“And then what?”
“And then I will do what I have to.”
“How will you come to know that she has stepped down?” Hunter asked.
“You will tell me, how else?” The kidnapper mocked.
Hunter became quiet for a while. “Okay,” he snarled. “But when will you deliver my pup to me? And how will I know that he is safe? After all, there is a chance that you eliminate Hawk.”
“The chance will only increase if you don’t do what I say.” Kidnapper said in a lazy voice. “So you better increase the pace of your plan and Hawk will be given to you safely back.”
Hunter let out a rough exhale. “Consider it done.”
“Great! I will call you on this phone after twelve hours.” the kidnapper said and disconnected the call. Hunter knew why he specified that he would call on this phone. It was because he wanted to make sure that Hunter remained in this cottage. Hunter placed the phone on the hook. Asher nodded at him.
“Are you sure you want this?” Mink said, her voice a mere whisper. She had come out of the room to attend the call from an unknown number.
“Yes!” her lover replied.
Mink suppressed her squeal. She was going to become the Luna of the Crescent pack. This was like a dream come true for a nurse who was just an omega. “Okay!” she glanced at River from the door who was still numb. “It can be done, but there is a risk.”
“I know there are risks involved, Mink. That is why I have put all my faith in you,” her lover crooned. “Won’t you do this much for our future?”
She sighed as her eyes became starry with dreams. “I will do it. Give me two days.”
“I don’t have more than twelve hours. I need you to do it by evening.”
“Goddess!” Mink bit her l*ip. “That is very less time. Alpha River is always surrounded by people. I am pissed at Faria. She never leaves this place!”
“Then finish her in the way you finished Hawk’s nanny. It should be simple for you.”
“Last time you assisted me.”
“Now you are experienced, love,” he said. “You must do as I am saying if you want to rule the Crescent pack.” After fidgeting with her skirt, she finally said, “Okay! I will get Arthur out.”
