“And I am the best father!”
Lena laughed and gestured to her father to come and join them in their hug.
Next day, Lena drove to Hotel Sapphire. She was excited to meet the hotel owner who was a human and who had the courage to build a hotel in the shifter land. She reached there in four hours and as soon as she got down, the bell boy and several others flocked to her to take her luggage. She was impressed by their hospitality. In less than half an hour she was in her room. She took a long bath, thought about River and what all happened, moped a lot, changed into a sundress and went down with her damp hair open.
As she walked and admired the gardens around the hotel, she wondered if she could meet the owner and appreciate his work out here. However, there was no such luck. When she enquired the receptionist if she could meet the owner, he refused her politely. “I am sorry Miss Lena, but Mr. Shawn Mendez is not available to meet. However, if you have an appointment, please let me know.”
Lena blinked her eyes in surprise. So Mr. Shawn Mendez was prince high almighty. “No thanks,” she snorted. “I am fine.” She spun on her heels and walked out of there. Mr. High Almighty could go to hell. “Humph!” She blew strand of hair from her face haughtily.
Lena had all the time in the world. She slept late till the next morning and when she woke up, it was 9 AM. She was always so much into doing her duties that she h*ardly ever saw that it was a weekend or not. For her all days were the same and she enjoyed her work.
And today it was a Saturday and she didn’t know what to do. She stared outside the window towards the hills in the far distance, the peaks of which hung over the thick poplars. Mist surrounded them just like the mist surrounded her life. Thoughts of River came back and she felt the pang of familiar pain. How had they drifted apart so much?
She dragged herself outside the bed and went to the bathroom. Things were so boring that all she did was to watch TV. She had asked the reception if they took guided hiking tours. They said that one was supposed to leave tomorrow in the morning for two days. She immediately signed herself for it. Though Lena could go all by herself on this hike, she didn’t want to go alone. Meeting new people would help her forget the pain.
She came out after scrubbing and rubbing herself so h*ard that her skin was raw and was shining. She chose to wear jeans and red tank top and go for breakfast, when all of a sudden, she was distracted by giggling and babbling of a young baby.
She brushed her hair, tied them in a high ponytail quickly and walked to the window to see who that was. A smile adorned her face when she saw a beautiful little girl with curly blond hair that was tied in a bow in a pink dress and matching shoes with a nanny.
Lena opened the door to say hi to the little girl who had instantly taken her heart when she stopped. Her wolf woke from her slumber and purred. Strong scent of sweet spices hit her nostrils and her knees buckled. She stared at the baby and saw that she was struggling to get out of her nanny’s lap to go to someone.
When Lena followed the direction of the baby girl, she found herself looking at the most beautiful man she had ever seen in her life. He had silky blond curly hair that reached his n*eck and amber eyes. Just like that of the baby with the nanny. “Lia!” he called her and took her from the nanny’s lap. Lia planted a k*iss on her daddy’s face and gave him one tooth smile.
Lena had never felt this desperate in her life. The man in front of her was so beautiful that she thought that if she didn’t k*iss him or feel him, she would die. But he was a human. And what happened next shocked her to the c*ore. “Mine!” her wolf growled and Lena had to hold the window’s knob t*ightly in order to not sink on her knees. A shudder ran down her b*ody at the realization that she had found her mate. She couldn’t stop herself from staring at him even though she wanted to drag her gaze away, she couldn’t. Blood rushed to her cheeks and suddenly everything became so hot that she felt like taking off all her clothes and taking a very cold shower. Her t*hroat became paper dry and she forgot to breathe.
Her wolf urged her to go and mark her mate, but Lena stood fixed in her place. He was a human and probably didn’t even know what mates were all about. Her world tilted on its axis and then started spinning so wildly that she felt dizzy. While she was staring at the man shamelessly and in her own thoughts, he whipped his head up to look at her and when their gazes met, her world stopped. He had the most beautiful amber eyes which could see right through her soul. She felt n*aked in front of him. And flushed. And sweaty. And crazily turned on. He frowned and narrowed his eyes as he continued to look at her. It kind of became a staring contest and none of them wanted to move. Lena took a deep shaky breath and that seemed to break his reverie. He jerked his head away and then strode inside with his baby girl with the nanny following.
Lena sank on her knees, a lump forming in her t*hroat. ‘Go to him’ her wolf urged.
‘He is a human,’ she reasoned.
‘So what? Go to him!’
Surely, the Moon Goddess played a joke with her. How could she pair a human with her? This was all such a disaster. Even if she rejected him, would he feel the pain? Engrossed in her thoughts, she decided that she should explore a little more before she left this hotel for good. This was a union that couldn’t be. No one would agree. Werewolves and Lycans had trade and business in the human world, but a human mate? Lena pinched herself to believe that this was real. “Ouch!” This was real. She sat on the floor for a while with her h*and on her forehead.
She was sure that even if she accepted him, he would never accept her. “The man has a baby and he is married,” Lena cried. “Why Moon Goddess, why?”
Her heart sank at the thought. Lena wasn’t the type who would wreck someone’s marriage. She closed her eyes as she realized the soup she was in. Her mate was a human and that too married. “No, no, no!” She couldn’t go to him.
‘At least meet him,’ her wolf whined, feeling her pain.
‘And do what?’ Lena asked. Now she realized as to why the man strode out of the garden, while glaring at her. Her wolf had no answer. She just wanted to meet her mate. ‘Even if I meet him, I will have to reject him.’ Lena said to her and words hurt her so badly that tears came out of her eyes. Her wolf whined more. Lena rubbed her c*hest to calm her wolf but nothing was working. She got up finally and had two glasses of water before heading down to the breakfast hall.
“What’s your room number?” asked the petite girl on the counter with a smile.
“503.” Lena gave her a small answer.
The girl checked her roaster and with a smile said, “Table number twenty-one is ready for you”
“Thanks,” she said as she headed to her table. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, avoiding other shifters who threw flirtatious glances at her. After keeping her phone and keys of her room on the table, she walked to the buffet where the dishes were. Her mind in a terrible mess, she served herself bacon, cheese, yogurt and broccoli in white sauce and came to her place. She really didn’t have an appetite but she didn’t know what else to do. She felt like crying as hell. She cursed her luck. She had to meet her mate for the first time and reject him? While eating bacon, she burst into tears. “I can’t!” she cried. “I can’t deal with this pain.” She decided to leave the place without meeting him because that would be best for his married life.
Just as she was getting up, someone passed a hanky to her. She jerked her head up to see that it was her mate. She gasped at the shock of him so close to her. She took the hanky and wiped her tears. Goddess. He was so handsome that it was criminal to be so good looking. He had broad shoulders and his white shirt stretched like second skin on him. His navy striped p*ants showcased his narrow waist and thick t*highs. He had rolled his sleeve till his forearm and she could see defined veins out there.
“Hi, I am Shawn,” he said with a raised eyebrow.
Lena was bereft. She didn’t know what to say because she realized that her t*ongue had swollen. Her l*ips had swollen and even her eyes had swollen. How did he know that she was here and why did he come to give her a hanky to wipe her tears?
“Can I join you for breakfast?” he asked in a cello-like voice that made her knees shake. Heat pooled in her b*ody and if this man didn’t leave in a few minutes, Lena was sure her p*anties would become wet like hell. While the human couldn’t smell her, the shifters around her would smell her easily. She had to get out of here as soon as possible.
She let the words tumble out of her m*outh, but she couldn’t comprehend what they were. They sounded something like sureitypoopitypoop. She cleared her t*hroat and managed to say in a hoarse voice, “Sure, can we have breakfast in the main lobby?” She knew she looked like a complete idiot to even suggest that, but she needed to get out of here as soon as possible.
Shawn considered her with amusement for a while and then said, “I have a better idea. We can have it in my room. I have to take a few meetings online and I can do them as well.”
Lena’s m*outh dropped to the floor. She blinked once and then twice. Would it be okay to sit with him and have breakfast in his room? Alone? What if his wife came and caught them? What if she jumped at him? And now she wasn’t sure what breakfast would she eat? ‘Go!’ her wolf pushed her.
