The cottage was small, but so cozy that Lena loved it. There were only two rooms, a kitchen, a living room and a small backyard.
Lena and Shawn settled in a room while Jack and Fiona settled along with Reeves in another. Little Lia wanted to be with Reeves and so she also went to sleep with them. They were pretty tired and after playing with Reeves, Lia went off to sleep, while Fiona talked to Lena as they made lunch together. Fiona was surprised to notice that the cottage was well stocked.
“The wedding planner is my cousin, so she also helped me with stocking the kitchen when she came to know that you all are coming with me,” Shawn explained.
“This is wonderful!” Fiona replied. “I never expected you to be so thoughtful.”
Shawn shook his head lightly. “Now you are my family. This is absolutely nothing. If you want to come here on a visit again, you can always tell me and I will ask my cousin to come and set it up for you.”
“Shawn,” Fiona said. “You are an absolute darling.” A growl from the door of the kitchen made everyone except Fiona jump. It was Jack.
“The only darling that you will ever have is me,” Jack growled. He walked over to her, pulled her in his arms and k*issed her on her l*ips passionately.
Lena was aghast. “Ewwww!” She picked up a carrot and sent it flying at her parents. Jack dodged it. “This is disgusting!” She exited the room and Shawn followed her with a chortle.
Shawn’s cousin, Maria, came over to their house. She was a woman in her mid-thirties, slightly rotund and short and extremely cute. She took Lena to the shop to choose a wedding gown. “Shawn has asked me to not bother about money when choosing the gown. I think he is head over heels for you!”
Lena blushed. “He is a wonderful man.”
“That he is,” Maria said as they entered the boutique. “It’s sad that his girlfriend left him, dumping the baby on him. I am sorry that Lia is a baggage you have to carry.”
“Not at all!” Lena countered. “She is a beautiful little child!” How could she explain to Maria that when a werewolf found his or her mate, they developed a bond with those who his close relations as well. Her bond with Lia was just like that. She was half of Shawn and her feeling for Lia were strong. She smelled like him. “I love her already. I hope that she accepts me.”
Maria was genuinely surprised. “Then I am so happy that Shawn found you. Lia is a lovely child.” They bought the wedding gown that had laces all over. The back was made of lacey material and the veil was long. The stylist pinned the dress to custom tailor it for her and promised to deliver it by evening.
When Maria and Lena reached home, they found a very sullen Shawn. “What’s the matter?” Lena asked, sitting next to him as Maria went to the kitchen to get pastries and coffee that Fiona had made.
Shawn shook his head. “Nothing, love,” he said and k*issed her. “How was your shopping?”
“You have to see the gown!” Maria chirped in as she picked up a pastry and stuffed it in her m*outh. She m*oaned when the pastry melted in her m*outh. “Jesus! This is the best pastry I’ve ever had!” She picked up another and ate it. “Gosh, can you leave your mom here? I swear I will take good care of her. Anything for these pastries!”
“How can I do that?” Jack growled again. He came to sit next to his wife. “She is my wife!”
“Oh, drop it, Jack!” Fiona rolled her eyes. Her husband was in his possessive mode since afternoon. Jack didn’t drop it. He pulled her closer to him and curled his arm around her shoulder in that possessive way. As Shawn and Maria laughed, Fiona and Lena rolled their eyes.
Reeves came in with Jane who was carrying Lia. He had wide eyes, full of excitement. “Mom, Dad!” he exclaimed. “Human boys are too sissy. They aren’t as strong as me. We went to the children’s park and they are not half as agile as I am!”
“Human boys?” Maria sipped her coffee as she blinked at Reeves.
Shawn gave her a t*ight smile. “It’s just the way he speaks. Nothing else.” Shawn was aware of the treaty amongst the werewolves and humans in which the werewolves couldn’t expose themselves in front of the humans.
Seeing that Reeves was not going to get quiet about it soon, Fiona jumped up and pulled him by his wrist to their room. “Look how dirty you are. Take a bath!”
Maria dismissed it saying, “boys” and then added, “The wedding ceremony will take place tomorrow at 9 AM. Be there and Shawn-” she glared at him. “You are not allowed to see your bride before the wedding. So you two will be sleeping in separate rooms. Rather, Shawn will be coming with me to my house and sleeping there.”
“What? Hell no!” Shawn resisted.
“I am not asking you, Shawn,” Maria growled. “I am informing you. If you won’t come nicely, all the boys of the family will come and pick you up bodily and take you out!”
Lena found it so interesting that she couldn’t help giggling. “Go Shawn. Lia and I are going to meet you at the church tomorrow.”
Reluctantly, Shawn agreed. He left with Maria after dragging it for an hour and until Maria was fed up and she threatened that she was calling all their brothers. Lena watched him leave and blew a k*iss as she stood with Lia at the door.
She woke up at 5 AM in the morning, too nervous. She wanted to message Shawn that she was panicky and picked up the phone. However, when she saw the last messages that she had sent to River, her first instinct was to message her or call her again. She opened the thread of conversation, knowing that her messages would still be unread, but when she saw their status as ‘read’, she was surprised. And that made her sadder. River knew that she was getting married, yet she didn’t reply. Lena decided that she would resign from her Beta duties because River’s cold behavior was pricking her like a thorn in her heart. She chucked the phone aside and got up to get ready. She had a big day in front of her and she wasn’t going to ruin it.
Maria came to help her dress up. She came with a matching dress for Lia. When Jane dressed her up, Lena couldn’t help cuddling Lia because she looked so lovely. Along with Fiona, when they dressed Lena, Lena couldn’t believe that she was getting married. Just a week back, she met Shawn and now she was becoming his bride. “I have never seen Shawn so happy in my life!” Maria commented as she tied the bow behind her back. “You are definitely special.”
Lena blushed. “He is special too.”
“I am sure,” Maria replied. “I can see it in your eyes when you both are together. I wish you had met Shawn earlier than that b*itch, Gena!”
“Lena!” her father called from the door that was locked. “It is 8:30 AM. We are late!”
Lena gathered her dress and picked it up, giving a nervous glance at herself in the mirror. “How do I look?” she asked.
“Perfect!” Fiona said and k*issed her on the forehead. “Your father has been practicing since yesterday on how to give away the bride to the groom. He is also anxious.”
“Why?” Maria sounded surprised. She gave them a weird look.
Fiona saved the situation again. “He is becoming a father-in-law for the first time, you see”
Maria paused for a moment and then shrugged. “I guess so!”
