Lia stifled her smile at her re-introduction. Blond curls and gray eyes, she resembled her a lot. Her eyes drifted to Lena and a cloud formed in her mind, but it evaporated the moment Lena hugged her and said, “Welcome back home.”
Lia’s eyes became blurry as tears threatened to roll out, but she blinked away her tears because she wanted to look at the family for as long as she could. The family that accepted her and loved her so much. The amount of love she was receiving was unbelievable.
It was like she had imagined crumbs and got a treasure instead. Lena’s soft and innocent words ‘welcome back home’ were the most beautiful she had heard in a long time. But Lia flinched from Lena when she tried to hug her t*ighter. As if understanding her predicament, Lena removed herself.
Lia appreciated it and offered her an awkward smile. All her life she had known mental abuse from Natalie and sometimes physical too. So this was very new.
“How did you find me?” she asked in a low and hoarse voice and as she spoke, she felt her energy draining. “Where am I?” She recalled that she had fainted in the cottage. “And how long have I been unconscious?” Lena glanced at Shawn nervously and said, “I am going to get coffee. Would you like to have some, Shawn?” When Shawn nodded, she signaled Shiloh to go with her. This was something that Lia would have liked to hear from her father and Lena was sure that they had a lot to catch up.
They had given up the hope of finding Lia. She had disappeared after she was kidnapped. They had kept a long watch on Natalie and Garry, but everything was fine on the outside. So where did Lia go? There were so many mysteries surrounding her right from the time she was kidnapped to the time she came back.
While Lena would have loved to listen, she decided it was daddy-daughter time. Maybe, Lia won’t open up that well in front of her. Lena closed the door before leaving with Shiloh. Shawn came to sit on the edge of the bed. He lifted Lia’s h*and in his and gave her that affectionate look which melted Lia’s heart instantly. How could Natalie paint her father’s picture to be that of a monster?
He caressed her h*and with his thumb. “My cousin, Maria, found you unconscious in the cottage. Her house is just two blocks away and she usually takes her dog out for a walk at night. She saw lights were on in the cottage and the main door was ajar.”
He chuckled. “She thought that thieves had come, so she called 911, but when the police came in, they found you. Maria was surprised to find you out there. After checking your bags, she knew that it was you. She called me and then took you to the hospital”
Goosebumps erupted on her skin and she swallowed her panic. What if Maria hadn’t found her? She made a mental note to thank her.
“Once the doctors put you on IVs, they said that you had food poisoning and that you had neglected it for too long “ Shawn’s t*hroat bobbed.
“You’ve been unconscious for four days.” He took in her frail b*ody and pale complexion. He had seen blue marks on her inner t*highs and didn’t want to ask her what really happened. “Really?” Lia was surprised.
“Yes…” His voice choked. “Maria gave me the letter that Natalie had written for you. I wish she was alive, because I wanted to punish her so bad!”
Lia looked away. Even she wanted to punish Natalie. She had taken away the best years of her life. “But why did she kidnap me? I mean why was it that she and Garry had to hide for so long? What was it that made them avenge you, avenge me? Did she hate me so much?”
Shawn lifted her h*and and k*issed it, blinking away another set of tears. “It’s a long story, Lia. I will definitely let you know about it, but I want you to become healthy. Once you are out of this hospital, we will go home.”
Her l*ips curled up at the way home sounded but she hoped that it wasn’t what she had left behind. “Thank you, daddy.”
Shawn’s heart squeezed when she called him daddy. “Sleep, little one.” He stroked her hair gently. Lia closed her eyes and wondered if her father had magic in his h*ands, because she soon drifted to sleep.
Three days later, they were all going back to home which Shawn said was nestled in a valley with woods surrounding it. Shiloh had become close but still Lia kept her at a distance. She didn’t trust Lena either and kept her at distance. It had been only three days of knowing them and she still had a lot of trust issues. The only person she wanted to be close to was her father.
When they sat in the helicopter, she sat next to him wondering just how rich he was. She had never been on a plane, so even though she was scared, she didn’t show it. The ride back home was almost two hours. She was happy to get down the chopper. There were people to collect their luggage which was impressive. A Maybach was standing for them with a chauffeur who opened the door for them. Lia flushed at the sheer amount of money her father had and she had yet to see the home. As they drove through the valley, Lia looked out of the car and her breath caught in her t*hroat. It was such beautiful scenery that she felt she belonged here. She was surprised at the feeling that appeared in her mind from nowhere. She shoved the feeling out because probably she was starved of love.
Their house was magnificent. It had two stories and was more like a manor than a normal house. A large living room decorated in cream and blue and a little bit of crimson made it look opulent.
“Our rooms are up there!” Shiloh chirped, pointing to the left on the first floor. “Come, let’s go! I want to show it!” Lia bit her l*ip, looked at her father. He nodded with a broad smile. Lena’s arm was curled in his and they both looked so happy that Lia got a bit jealous. She wanted her father for herself, but she also knew that she was being selfish. ‘One thing at a time, Lia!’ she reminded herself and walked after Shiloh.
Shiloh’s curly golden hair bounced around her head as she talked animatedly nonstop and climbed the stairs to reach their room. As she opened the door of her room, she said, “Daddy has already talked to the school. They will take you but-” she pursed her l*ips.
Lia frowned. “But-”
“You have to give some tests to prove yourself. Daddy contacted your last school to give you a certificate for transfer, but they said that there’s no Lia Mendez, only Liah Garrison. Daddy wants to keep your identity a secret and so he couldn’t insist. And so you have to give a few tests to show that you are in your final year of school!” At first, Lia was astonished, but she quickly tampered it down because she also didn’t want anyone at Blowing Rock to know where she was. Lia gave a c*ocky smile to Shiloh and said, “I can handle that!”
“Cool!” Shiloh grinned.
Lia was bewildered when she saw how beautiful her room was. There was a queen-sized bed in the right corner with runners around it. A TV with the latest music system and a PS4 perched on a long cupboard in front of it. A writing table with cupboards and wardrobes attached sprawled on one side. On the left of them was the door to her bathroom.
“I am going to my room,” Shiloh said. “If you want something, you can let me know, okay?”
Lia nodded. Suddenly Shiloh jumped at her and hugged her t*ightly. “I am so happy that you are here. Daddy and mommy never tire of talking about you. You know I was beginning to get jealous a little bit, but now I am not. You are every bit and then some more than what they’ve said.” Shiloh pulled out, barely concealing her tears. “You are even more beautiful than what I had imagined.”
Lia’s m*outh parted, seeing Shiloh’s innocent love for her. “You are also very beautiful, Shiloh.”
She giggled, flushing. “Tomorrow, we will go to town in the evening to buy your clothes!”
Lia had a lovely and sumptuous dinner with her newly found family in the evening. Shawn and Lena fussed over her so much that she got irritated. They weren’t allowing her to eat any of her favorite food. She was made to eat porridge. “Yuck! Bleh!” Shiloh giggled and secretly h*anded her a shrimp below the table.
They all went to bed early because Shawn had asked her to be ready by 8AM in the morning for a test at school. The Dark Moon School was a beautiful and gorgeous building. Built from glazed red bricks with a lush green garden wrapped around it, it immediately attracted Lia’s attention. As she passed the lawns admiring the structure, she felt as if she was being watched. She clenched her jaw for overthinking, shoving the thought.
