Danika remained silent, and her gaze turned colder.
Faye hurriedly added, “Don’t get me wrong. I just don’t know how to repay you, so I thought of this. By the way, what do you think of Eustace?”
She observed Danika, trying to observe if there was any change in her expression. Danika couldn’t stop herself from laughing aloud. Was that what she was worried about?
“Miss Lawrence, you don’t need to test my reaction like that. I’m not interested in Eustace.”
It appeared that Eustace didn’t make Faye feel secure around him, which would explain why she was so worried about losing him. What a scumbag he was!
“Dr. Zellweger, I…I didn’t mean that,” she replied, putting on a sad expression as if she had been misunderstood.
Just as Danika was about to speak, Eustace walked into the ward.
“What are you talking about?”
“Eustace!” Upon seeing Eustace, Faye smiled instantly. “I was asking Dr. Zellweger about her ideal type. Since there are many handsome young men in our circle, I was thinking of introducing them to her.”
Eustace’s expression turned gloomy, feeling uncomfortable with the idea for some reason.
“Dr. Zellweger is a person of high standards. I doubt she would need your help in that area.”
“Ah, you’re right,” Despite nodding her head, Faye seemed unwilling to give up. She looked at Danika and asked, “Dr. Zellweger, you may not know your type, but certainly you know the type of men you dislike, right? Could you let me know? I don’t want to introduce you to a person you dislike.”
Glancing at Eustace, Danika answered calmly, “I don’t like people with the surname Quincey.”
Instantly, the atmosphere turned frosty.
Eustace glared murderously at Danika, asking, “Why? Does the surname Quincey offend you?”
“A fortune teller once told me I wouldn’t be compatible with anyone with the surname Quincey.”
Their issue was more than being incompatible with each other. They got a divorce after two years despite never meeting each other.
Due to the tense atmosphere, Faye felt a little breathless.
“Dr. Zellweger, did you perhaps have a misunderstanding with Eustace?”
Only an idiot wouldn’t be able to sense Danika’s resentment for Eustace. But the real question was why did she feel that way?
“You are overthinking. I just don’t like the surname Quincey,” Danika replied.
“Was it because of the rumors, Dr. Zellweger?” Faye asked as if trying to clear Eustace’s name. “Eustace is indeed a divorcé, but it’s not his fault.
“His ex-wife is a vulgar country bumpkin, so they were incompatible. Hence, their divorce was inevitable. Please don’t think poorly of Eustace because of this, Dr. Zellweger.”
Her tone was full of disdain for Eustace’s ex-wife. Little did she know, the ex-wife she was belittling was standing right in front of her and had even saved her life.
Sneering in her heart, Danika turned to look at Eustace, asking, “Do you agree, Mr. Quincey? Do you think of your ex-wife like this?”
Not understanding the reason behind Danika’s taunting tone, Eustace answered solemnly, “We were incompatible, so divorce was the best choice.”
Incompatible? Danika sneered secretly. How could he tell they were incompatible when they had never even met once in the two years they were married? It seemed that he never intended to get along with her from the very start. After all, Eustace thought his ex-wife was a country bumpkin, unworthy of a man of his status.
Her eyes swept over them as she snorted, “Well, I pity your ex-wife, Mr. Quincey.”
Then, she left the ward without looking back, refusing to stay with them for a moment longer. Eustace and Faye were truly fated to be together, she thought to herself.
However, the moment she stepped out of the ward, someone chased after her. With his tall, looming figure, Eustace stood before Danika, asking, “Are you angry because I was married before?”
“You’re overthinking, Mr. Quincey,” she replied, somewhat dumbfounded. “What does your love life have to do with me? I think it concerns the patient in this ward more than it concerns me.”
“Why are you bringing Faye into this? What does she have to do with this?” he asked, unable to comprehend what she had just said.
Thinking that he was annoyed that she mentioned Faye, Danika pouted and said, “Aw, of course, Miss Lawrence has nothing to do with this. I shouldn’t have mentioned her!”
He was really protective of his lover, so much so that no one was allowed to even speak about her.
“Stop changing the subject! Why are you angry?” he asked, staring at Danika, trying to see through her.
Unfortunately for him, Danika was good at hiding her emotions.
“I’m not angry,” she said. Then, she added, “I just feel that it’s unfair for your ex-wife, Mr. Quincey. Don’t you think it’s embarrassing and frustrating for her to be gossiped about behind her back even after her divorce?”
She was, in fact, upset. No one would be happy to hear someone talking about them behind their back.
“I didn’t marry her of my own will, which is why Faye feels upset for me. She doesn’t mean anything else,” Eustace explained.
Before Danika could say anything, he continued, “Although I haven’t met her, I think she’s a good person, but we’re just not compatible.”
After all, his ex-wife hadn’t caused him any trouble in the past two years. If she had been a meddling, scheming woman, he would not have had the peace he had for the past two years.
Alas, his explanation did not improve Danika’s mood. Instead, it worsened her mood.
A good person? Was that all she was after two years of marriage? Who did he think he was to tell her whether she was a good person or not?
Wearing a dark expression, she said coldly, “You don’t need to tell me all that, Mr. Quincey. I’m not interested in your personal matters.”
She tried to leave, but Eustace refused to move aside.
“Excuse me, Mr. Quincey. Please get out of my way. I’m swamped,” she said unpleasantly.
Eustace’s anger flared. Why was she glaring at him as if he were her enemy and as if he had committed a great crime? It was rare for him to explain himself, yet she was reacting in such a manner.
“Dr. Zellweger, you should stop playing hard to get. People will only feel disgusted if you do that,” he commented coldly. His meaning was clear. He was giving her a chance, so she shouldn’t be ungrateful.
Danika was playing hard to get? Hearing that, she was rendered speechless. Was her resentment toward him not evident enough? Was Eustace out of his mind?
She quickly concluded that Eustace was mentally impaired.
“Mr. Quincey, please check your brain when you have time. Actually, I can arrange a check-up for you right now. After all, we should be wary when the health of our brains is concerned.”
“Dr. Zellweger!” he said through gritted teeth. “Are you saying you’re not playing hard to get?”
“I’m not,” she replied without hesitation. “I’m not interested in you, Mr. Quincey. Remember what I said in the ward? I don’t like people with the surname Quincey.”
With that, Danika walked away, leaving Eustace with his heart flooded with anger, embarrassment, and doubt.
