The office of the principal was cozy with a large desk in the center and a cabinet on the side with various files neatly stacked.
“Mr. Mendez,” the principal, Amy Barry, said. “I was expecting you.” She gave a warm smile to Lia and then took them to a small room with one desk and chair. “You will be giving your test here, Lia.” As soon as Lia sat on the chair, she h*anded her a question paper with answer sheets. “You have three hours to answer the questions.” She looked at Shawn and then back at Lia. “The questions are tough and I suggest that you read them properly before you answer them. Your father has proposed that you be taken mid-year in your senior high school, but he hasn’t been able to provide me with previous certificates. So I really have to test your capability. Don’t take it lightly, okay?”
Lia nodded as she let out a rough exhale. Nervousness bubbled in her c*hest. “I will be waiting for you outside, pumpkin,” Shawn said. “Don’t be nervous. I believe in you.” Lia got a pale blush when she heard her father’s endearment. “Thanks,” she replied with a nervous smile. The door closed and Lia’s time started. She started writing her answers and lost track of time while writing them down. Once she finished her test, she turned to the leaves to check for mistakes. She found some, corrected them and re-checked her paper. While she was rechecking, Amy came in.
“Your time is over?’ she said and picked up the answer sheets. “I will let you know about the results by evening.”
“Thanks again,” Lia said excitedly. She was surprised to find Shawn sitting over there waiting for her in the lobby. “Daddy.”
“Lia!” Shawn jumped up. “Done?”
She nodded.
Shawn didn’t ask her as to how her test went. He just smiled at her and said, “Would you like to have coffee?”
“I would love to!”
They had coffee in the town where Shawn fussed over here for not eating the cake. Her stomach was still fragile. “Does Shiloh study in this school?” she asked as she sipped her coffee.
“Yes, she is three years your junior.”
“I found the name of the school strange. Dark Moon School,” she chuckled. “Why would anyone name the school Dark Moon?”
Shawn stopped sipping his coffee and stared at her. He just didn’t know how to reply to her question. Lia had lived in the human world and didn’t know anything about werewolves. He was scared of telling her that she was amongst Lycans and werewolves. He l*icked his l*ips and lowered his eyes. He was going to tell her about this some other time. Heck, her stepmother Lena was a werewolf.
When Lia noticed that Shawn didn’t have an answer to her question, she shot another one. “How come you landed in this place? I mean all the way from Middleton?”
Shawn kept his mug on the table. “I came to Crescent p— town when your mother left me. You were only ten months old. Here I found Lena and married her. After you were kidnapped—” his t*hroat bobbed at the sad emotion. “I was shattered. I didn’t know what to do so I started building a chain of hotels. I opened one in Crescent town, one in the Dark Moon town and there’s one on a highway between these two towns. We were staying in Crescent town but realized that the studies at Dark Moon town were better, so we moved here.”
“Oh, okay,” Lia nodded. She sipped her coffee. “Strange town names!”
They went back home and Shawn refused to leave his daughter. He was so intrigued by her that he would follow her even to her bedroom. In the evening when Shiloh came, the two sisters went to her room. Shiloh closed the door not allowing Shawn to enter. Lena laughed at him and dragged him to their room. The sisters bonded over music and books and sports.
“Do you know our school’s football captain, Arthur, is sooooo good looking?” she said, literally drooling. “He has the dreamiest eyes.”
Lia chuckled as she shook her head.
“And do you know our rugby captain, Hawk? Omg! Omg! He is so hot. They are both brothers. They are the hottest items of the Dark Moon School!” She sighed. “But-” she scrunched her nose. “I hate it when the stupid b*itches, Gwen and Tabatha, hang around with them all the time. They are hanging on their arms like snakes.” Lia bopped her nose. “You should focus on your studies, Shiloh!”
Shiloh rolled her eyes. “I am not a bad student.” She placed her headphones on her ears. “Hawk and Arthur are twins. They roam around the school along with their cousins, Gina, Tina and Gabriel. They are also sooooo good looking. Sigh…”
“I think your day isn’t over unless you see them?” Lia commented.
“It isn’t!”
At 7PM, Shawn was pounding on their door. “Girls! Lia! Your result is out.”
Lia rushed to open the door after tossing her book on the side. She was p*anting by the time she opened the door. Wide eyed, she asked, “What does it say?”
Shawn had that proud look on his face. “You have got an impressive 94 on 100.”
Lia’s face fell. “What? Where did I miss those six marks? Have they failed me?”
Shawn raised his eyebrow. “Lia, you have got a phenomenal score!”
“Congratulations!” Lena came after him with a red velvet cake. “You are starting tomorrow.”
“Really?” Lia asked, doubt clouding her mind.
“Omg!” Shiloh shouted excitedly. “Omg!” She rushed and hugged Lia from behind. Lia flinched, not liking the contact. Shiloh left her immediately. “I am sorry. But guess what? We are going to school together starting tomorrow!”
Next day Shawn dropped both his daughters proudly at the school. “I will be here to pick you up.”
“Okay!” Shiloh said excitedly as she grabbed Lia’s h*and and tugged her towards the main school building. She took Lia to the notice board where they saw her schedule and then walked her to her class. She whispered nervously, giggling, “Arthur and Hawk are in your class. Have fun!”
Lia rolled her eyes. When she entered the class, she could sense the eyes of the students on her. She scratched the back of her n*eck and went to sit in the last where four chairs were vacant. She didn’t want to mingle with anyone, so she took her books out from the satchel and began flipping through the pages nervously.
All of a sudden, there was a loud laughter in the aisle outside the class and then the laughter came inside. She lifted her eyes and found herself gazing at the sharp green eyes of the most beautiful boy she had ever seen. Entranced, her gaze drifted to the boy behind him who looked quite like the one in front of him and possessed equally gorgeous features with the exception of having deep blue eyes. Lia forgot to breathe and parted her l*ips. She could swear that she heard a low growl from the boys.
The laughter had died down only to be replaced with tension in the air so thick that it was palpable. Lia could feel the heat rushing to her cheeks, n*eck and c*hest. Her n*ipples puckered.
