A passerby exclaimed, “Move! The car’s coming at you!”
Hearing this, River saw the sedan heading straight for her and Naomi.
–“Look out!” Naomi suddenly yelled.
In the next instant, Naomi threw herself toward River.
A loud crash followed shortly.
River raised her eyes and saw the white VW Santana crash into the diner.
Piercing screams filled the air.
Naomi stood up and gazed at River with concern. “Are you okay, Ms. Healy?”
River shook her head, her face terribly pale. Naomi might have been dead now if she hadn’t acted fast before.
She glanced at Naomi, noticing a scary cut on her arm. Quickly getting up, River urged, “We need to go to the hospital, Naomi!”
Naomi looked at her arm following River’s eyes. Her face was calm as if she couldn’t sense any pain. “No need. It’s not a big deal.”
River said, “It’s not nothing! Come, I’m taking you to the hospital“”
Naomi signed in and went into the emergency room. She got over ten stitches on her arm. Then, she had an X–ray that found a broken elbow.
River felt very guilty. “I will provide paid medical leave for you so you can recuperate at home.
Naomi. I will remember what you did today. Thank you”
Naomi muttered nonchalantly, ‘You’ve already thanked me repeatedly, Ms. Healy. I don’t need to rest, so I don’t want the medical leave.”
“No! You can’t go to work like this,” River said.
Naomi said, “You can’t stop me from working from home.”
Workaholic… The word emerged in River’s mind.
She had never encountered someone as dedicated to work as Naomi. Despite this, Naomi proved to be a competent assistant, easing her workload.
Unable to convince Naomi, she suggested, “You could work from home. Take your time deciding if you want to return to the company.”
Naomi nodded.
River accompanied Naomi to pick up her prescription and then returned with her to the company after lunch. Following that, River instructed a bodyguard to escort Naomi home.
Paige looked at River upon her return to the hospital. “River, what took you so long?”
River shared the story with Paige, her smile bitter.
Paige’s eyes widened in shock. “My god, is someone trying to hurt you again?”
River shook her head. “No, the driver passed away on the scene.”
“Oh no, oh no, you’re making me have scary thoughts because of you,” Paige pulled her neck back in fear, looking at River, who seemed amused.
“Water…”
Tyler’s raspy, childish voice made River stop laughing.
River and Paige looked at the bed in unison and found that Tyler had already awakened.
Paige shrieked and rushed forward ‘Oh, my godson! You’re awake at last.”
Tyler looked at Paige in contempt. “You’re dramatic”
Paige glared at Tyler and said ferociously, ‘You ungrateful brat!”
Tyler shifted his gaze to his mother, who was pouring water for him with tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry for making you worried, Mommy,” he said.
River shook her head and sniffed She got some water and put the straw in Tyler’s mouth. “I’m okay, and I’m strong when you’re safe.”
Tyler drank the water while Paige reminded him, “Drink slowly so you don’t choke.”
Tyler coughed as soon as Paige’s voice faded.
Paige hastily soothed Tyler’s chest. “Look at you. I told you to slow down!”
“It was you… You jinxed it.”
“Alright, I talked too much and jinxed it.”
River’s sorrow gradually faded when she saw Tyler teasing them in good spirits.
At night in Bayview Villa, Liora sat in Scott’s embrace, happily swinging her legs as she called Axel.
“Ty is awake, Axel!”
“That’s awesome. You will be seeing Ty soon.” Axel was joyous but not very skilled in expressing it with his words.
Liora heaved a sigh. “I miss you so much, Axel. Mommy didn’t allow me to go to school for the last two days.”
“Hmm, I miss you too. Mommy won’t let you go to school because she wants you to rest at home for a few days to recover.” Axel made comforting remarks to Liora with great effort.
“I know. How about you, Axel?” Liora said with her cheeks puffed up.
She said angrily, “Did he take extra care of you the past two days?”
Axel kept quiet for a moment. “Yes”
Meanwhile, he was seated before his laptop, gazing at the surveillance video of the study, his face. gloomy. Over the last few days, his father had been retreating to the study right after dinner. He would then immerse himself in work until midnight.
“I can relax knowing you’re looked after. I’ll draw and sleep early. Goodnight, Axel.”
Liora’s soft voice lightened Axel’s heavy mood slightly.
“Goodnight, Lia.”
Liora passed the phone back to Scott and stared at him. “Papa Wilson, can I ask you something?” she asked
Scott’s gaze was gentle. “What is it, Lia?”
“If that man learned that I’m his child and tried to reunite with me, would you be unhappy?”
Scott shook his head with a smile. “I won’t feel sad if you and your mother aren’t sad. That’s an unchangeable truth.”
“What if that man wants to be with Mommy again?” Liora asked.
Scott said calmly, “I will give my blessing to them.
Liora lay in Scott’s arms. “Papa Wilson, you are much better than him. It would be great if you. could be my daddy.”
Scott gently stroked Liora’s soft hair and smiled, though he remained silent.
His eyes slowly grew dim as he wondered, ‘Will she get back with him again?‘
Axel gazed at the laptop screen, deep in thought after setting his phone aside.
He deeply cared for his parents, but some matters were meant for his father to handle alone.
He didn’t want his grandfather to have custody of Tyler and Liora. That would make his mother suffer every day, missing her kids.
Daddy, please forgive me for favoring Mommy selfishly.”
Tyler was discharged from the hospital on Sunday.
Neil escorted River back to Bayview Villa with ten bodyguards. He ordered them not to leave the children at any time after the previous incident.
Neil also brought news that Daniella had been released on bail without charges and taken back to
Xander Residence
River had expected this, but it happened two days later than she had anticipated.
River cooked soup for Tyler. “I believe that Grayson has scolded Daniella again, right?”
Neil replied, “No. He berated her for doing things without thinking through.”
River’s hands stopped for a moment. She chuckled and said, “They really are like a family.”
Neil kept quiet for a while. “If our mother was still alive, she would be deeply disheartened by Grandpa’s actions.”
Neil stood upright. “Oh right, Noah has been searching for someone recently. Are you aware of this, River?”
River was stunned and looked up. “Searching for someone?”
“Hmm. It has been a week. It is said that he is searching for a woman in secret.”
River’s gaze dimmed. Then, she said calmly, “That’s none of my business.”
– A bodyguard walked in and said, “Sir, Ma’am, two people are quarreling outside.”
Neil asked, “Who?”
The bodyguard shook his head. “I don’t know, but they are in a heated argument.”
River set aside her spoon, puzzled, and went to the door. She heard two voices she recognized before she saw the people.
“Price, are you vengeful or something? Has my car offended you?” Paige shouted
“It was you who suddenly drove in reverse. I wasn’t the one who crashed forward on purpose,” Alex explained patiently.
Paige burst out in laughter. “You might as well claim that I’m blind!”
“There’s nothing I can do if you choose to think that way,” Alex said lazily
“Damn it! If you hadn’t come here for no reason, would my car crash into yours?”
“A certain individual asked me to visit Tyler to show concern on their behalf.”
“It’s not a concern if you don’t even have the courage to tell the person’s name!”
River was about to speak while observing their endless argument. But before she could say anything, a light voice echoed “It’s terrifying to see them quarreling.”
River turned her head and unexpectedly saw Jamie standing behind her. Jamie glanced at Alex and Paige with a hint of resentment, even though there seemed to be no clear reason for it.
