Lia looked away from everyone and stared out of the window where dense clouds hung over the poplars. Lena pursed her l*ips and shook her head slightly as she silently asked Arthur and Hawk to leave. Their expressions were etched with worry when they left. She looked at Shawn. He shrugged. “I have to go back to the office,” he said. “There’s a hotel coming up in the demon capital.” He got up after k*issing Lia on her head and along with the boys left.
When they had closed the main door after them, Lena said, “Lia, they were the ones who brought you home. They were really concerned about you.”
Lia took a ragged breath in as she lowered her eyes to her lap. She wondered if she should tell Lena about them. “They have girlfriends…” was all she mentioned.
Lena took her h*and in hers and caressed her knuckles with her thumb. “I don’t know much about what is going on in school, but from what I know is that they are both the most intelligent, smart and the strongest in our pack. They can shift into werewolves and Lycans.”
This raised her curiosity. “Wow! Now that you have mentioned the word pack, you have to tell me everything about this world. I feel so confused. And how come Arthur and Hawk know me from before. I just can’t remember anything!”
Lena gave a soft smile. “How about we talk about it over tea and popcorn?”
Lia chuckled. “Good idea. But I would love coffee.”
“Great! Give me five minutes.”
As Lena left to make coffee, Lia closed her eyes. The way Lena was coming close to her was a wonderful feeling. Natalie had never ever tried to get close to her and always kept her at a distance. She blinked away the tears that came in her eyes because she wanted happy things for herself from now on and for that she had to know what exactly she was dealing with.
Lena came back with coffee and popcorn and cheese garlic toast. Lia sipped the hot coffee and then looked expectantly at Lena.
“As you know that we are werewolves and Lycans, we all choose to stay away from humans. It is important because there’s a treaty between humans and other supernatural species to never mingle. We can’t reveal ourselves to humans unless it is a dire emergency. Humans are very fragile in front of us.” Lena went on to talk about various things about how packs worked. Lia found herself becoming very interested in it. Everything was new and rather than feeling shocked or repulsed, she felt… excited and exhilarated. “What is a mate?” she asked in the end. “I saw Robert shifting into a Lycan when he felt that his mate was around. He was ready to pounce on me and Arthur and Hawk also.”
“Mate is the most revered bond amongst werewolves and Lycans. Earlier when there was a divide between us, mates were not easy to find, but after Alpha Hunter and Alpha River came together, they removed this divide which has led to many more discoveries of mates. It’s a bond which the werewolves and the Lycans feel when they find their soulmates. The attraction in them is natural and so strong that it is impossible to deny it. It’s like mates want to claim each other and become overly protective about each other.”
“Are you and daddy mates?” Lia asked, astonished. She stopped eating popcorn. She was trying to make sense of her attraction towards the twins.
Lena smiled. “Yes, we are mates.”
“Oh. My. God!” Lia rasped as she sat straight on her bed, staring at Lena as if she had grown two heads. “You guys are mates!” She closed her gaping m*outh with her h*ands.
Lena laughed softly. She shrugged. “That’s one of the reasons we don’t quarrel much. We both understand each other better than anyone.”
“Gods!” Lia was smiling, watching Lena getting a pale blush. “You are adorable!”
Lena tipped her head up and laughed out loud. “And you are beautiful!”
Lia scrunched her nose. “Will Shiloh also shift into her wolf?”
“I hope so!” Lena sighed. “She has human genes and mine is the only mate who is human. So I am worried about it.”
“Why are you worried? I mean so what if she doesn’t shift?”
Lena’s l*ips pursed into a t*ight line. “When a werewolf can’t shift, it is an abomination. It’s difficult to explain… If Shiloh won’t be able to shift, maybe I will persuade her to go with you to the human world and not become a joke in this community.”
“What do you mean by that?” Lia growled, suddenly all protective about Shiloh. “She will never be a joke and I will ensure that! And both Shiloh and I are not going anywhere!”
“Oh Lia!” Lena cried and hugged her t*ightly. “You are so beautiful inside and out. We are so lucky to have you with us.”
Lia buried her n*eck in her mom’s n*eck and inhaled her scent. “I am lucky to have you.” All at once, she pulled away. “Hey, you didn’t tell me how Arthur and Hawk knew me before I was a year old?”
A knock on the door sounded. Lena stopped the conversation in the middle. “Shiloh!”
Shiloh rushed to Lia and jumped at her to hug her t*ightly. “Goddess! I heard what happened. That Robert is such a douche. I hope he didn’t attack you. He shouldn’t have come to the school. He is such an idiot!” Lia tittered as she found herself trying to relax her little sister. “I am fine. Thank you.”
Shiloh removed herself, cupped Ida’s cheeks, turned it right and left and then let out a rough exhale. “Thank goddess!”
Lena left her two daughters to speak about it because she knew that siblings were the best to heal each other mentally. She closed the door behind her, listening to them babbling about it. She would tell her about the twins some other time.
Lia didn’t go to school the next day. There was so much information that she had to take in that she wanted some time alone. After breakfast, she decided to take a short stroll into the woods where Lena had said was a small lake. She wore her jeans and a sweatshirt and after asking for directions from Lena, she walked to that place. Her breath lodged in her t*hroat when she reached it. Like a mirror on the wall, the lake was oval and flat. There was a crown of hills that surrounded it on three sides that were covered with dense vegetation. She came to sit on the edge under a tall and lush willow, the branches of which lapped the water. She immersed her feet in the cool water of the lake and tipped her head up to inhale the fresh and cool air. Her heart and mind felt as tranquil as the lake. Her reverie was disturbed when a twig behind her snapped. She snapped her head back only to see two large wolves standing behind her. One was pure black with green eyes and the other was pure white with arctic blue eyes and with a black star on his head. A shiver ran down her spine seeing them. She had never seen wolves this tall. They were almost six feet in height and very muscular.
Lia should have felt scared, but when she gazed in eyes, her fear vanished. The wolves didn’t attempt to go closer to her and sat where they were, as if guarding her looking expectantly at her. Mesmerized, her l*ips parted as she continued to stare at them, wondering what it would be to dig her h*ands in their soft fur. She didn’t move from her spot and then slowly turned her head to look back at the lake. She could still feel their presence. “You can come and sit next to me,” she said with a chuckle, not trusting whether they would understand her.
But she was startled when they listened to her and came to sit on her two sides. At first, she was just overwhelmed by two large wolves next to her, but she didn’t know from where she got the courage to run her f*ingers through their silky fur. “Gods, you both have such lovely fur. She nuzzled her nose on the furry head of the black wolf. He let out a growl which was more like a purr. She giggled and nuzzled her face on the white wolf. He simply purred like a cat. “You both are so majestic.”
After a while she started talking to them. “I didn’t go to school today. I am not sure if I want to go tomorrow either.” The white wolf placed his head on her lap and whimpered. She chuckled, scratching his head. “Let’s see…”
