Arthur’s t*hroat bobbed. “I can’t…”
Hawk came in and went to sit back next to Lia.
“You both look very tired,” Shawn stated.
“No we are not…” Arthur replied. His gaze drifted to Shawn. “Do you know?”
Shawn smiled but his smile didn’t reach his eyes. “I know that she is your mate. Hunter and River told me.”
“Then you also know that we won’t be able to leave her…” Hawk muttered. “But-” he lifted his head to see Shawn. “You must go and take a rest.”
Shawn sighed. He knew that with Arthur and Hawk around Lia, no one would be able to harm her. “I will get coffee for both of you and leave. If anything happens, call me immediately. I won’t be able to sleep peacefully.”
Hunter had sent about five warriors who stationed themselves in the corridor and at the door of the room where Lia was. River came in the morning with a pair of change for her boys. Shiloh and Lena also came with her. No one was in a mood to talk because Lia hadn’t woken up yet. It had been twelve hours already.
“Did Asher find anything?” Hawk asked as he changed into a polo.
“I don’t know…” River said, watching Lia’s steady rise and fall of c*hest. It was only 6 AM and she hadn’t called him. Lena had brought tuna sandwiches for them, but the twins refused to eat. “Why don’t you go and take a stroll outside?” she suggested. “We are here.”
Arthur’s mind was clogged with too many scenarios that could have led to Lia’s accident. He got up and walked outside and stopped only when he reached the edge of the woods that surrounded the hospital. He stabbed his f*ingers in his hair and looked up at the sky. His c*hest rumbled and a roar left his t*hroat. Hawk was right behind him. He hugged his brother from behind till Arthur soothed a little. “Who could have done it?”
“Beats me…” Hawk said.
“Arthur! Hawk!” Tabatha’s voice came from behind.
They both turned to look at her.
“What are you doing here?” Hawk asked, glowering at her.
She hesitated. “Umm… My aunt is hospitalized. I am visiting her. I saw you coming to this side, so I wondered why you were here and came to ask if things were alright.”
“Yeah, everything is fine. We’ve come to see one of our warriors,” Arthur replied, hiding about Lena. “Oh, I heard that you were with the patrol party last night,” Tabatha said. “Are there any rogues around?”
“We aren’t sure yet,” he said coldly. Along with Hawk he was about to leave when they saw Gwen coming this side. “What is she doing here?” he asked Tabatha.
She shrugged. “I don’t know.”
Gwen increased her pace when she saw the twins. “Arthur, Hawk!” she exclaimed. “Oh my goddess! I am so sorry to hear about Lia.”
“Lia? What happened to Lia?” Tabatha asked, surprised.
“She met with an accident!” Gwen said. “Don’t you know?”
Tabatha blinked her eyes. “How would I know? I have been with my aunt since after school yesterday.”
Lia felt like she was floating. The darkness that had consumed her was slowly dissipating. She heard faint murmurs. She tried to m*oan but her t*hroat was so dry that it produced a short raspy sound. Someone called her name. “Lia! Lia!” Slowly, she peeled open her eyes but quickly shut them because of the harsh overhead light. A warm h*and encased her small ones and she loved the t*ouch. It was familiar. So warm, so soothing. She wondered where she was because she was surrounded by the smell of antiseptic. This was surely a hospital. The distant voice was closer now. “Lia.” It carried pain and hurt and love. “Open your eyes baby girl.”
She slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry and her eyelids felt heavy, but she forced open her eyes anyway. Arthur’s face loomed over her. A smile curled her l*ips up but why did it hurt so much to smile. “Arthur…” she murmured with a lot of effort.
“Baby girl.” He sq***zed her h*and in his as he looked at her with concern all over his face.
“Lia!” Shawn’s voice came from the other side. She turned her head to look at her father and found him standing with Lena and Shiloh.
“Daddy…”
Shawn picked up her h*and and p**ssed it against his face, trying to blink away his tears. Lena brushed his back in a reassuring way. Shiloh went to stand next to Arthur. And Lia saw that Hawk was standing at the foot of the bed, leaning over the edge and watching her.
She let out a weak chuckle. “I am fine…”
“Well, good morning sleeping beauty!” Shiloh said cheerfully. “I was dying to talk to you! You took so long to wake up.”
“Where am I? What time is it?” she panicked. She tried to recall what happened to her and when it all flooded back, she tried to sit up. “What about the driver?” But she immediately winced in pain. “Oh god, my b*ody hurts.”
“Calm down, baby girl.” Arthur sat next to her. “The drive is fine. He was discharged this morning.”
“So soon?” She was surprised, but then she remembered that the werewolves and Lycans healed fast. “I was in an accident.” It must have been an accident.
“It was,” Arthur replied, refusing to let go of her h*and.
“Go call the doctor?’ Lena said to Shawn. As soon as Shawn left, Lena was on her side. “Do you remember how it happened?”
“Please don’t ask her questions at this moment, Aunt Lena,” Hawk said with a deep t*hroaty voice. “She is in a lot of pain.”
Lena nodded. “Yes, I guess you are right, but Lia-” she said in a serious tone. “I want you to remember everything and give me the details as soon as you feel you can.”
“I will,” Lia replied weakly.
Lena patted her h*and. She looked at Shiloh and said, “Come on. I will drop you to the school.”
“Can’t I stay with her for the day?” Shiloh said reluctantly.
“And disturb her?” Lena chided her. “You can come back in the evening after school, okay?”
Shiloh gritted her teeth. “Okay…” she said half-heartedly. When they left, the doctor walked in with Shawn. The doctor examined her thoroughly as Arthur and Hawk stood patiently. “You seem to have healed well, Lia,” the doctor said with a smile. “If you continue like this, I will discharge you in two days.”
After talking to her about her health, he asked Shawn to accompany him to his office. As soon as they left, Hawk and Arthur sat on her both sides and hugged her as lightly as possible. “Baby girl…” Arthur murmured as he peppered k*isses on her face. “We missed you.”
Hawk just held her t*ightly and closed his eyes. This was the most painful experience he had ever had in his life. “Don’t do this again. I can’t live without you,” he said as he buried his face in her n*eck and inhaled her scent to calm down his anxiety.
She chuckled as she stroked his hair with her f*ingers. “Stop worrying so much.”
