She snapped her eyes at him. “Of course! What do you mean?”
Arthur glanced at Hawk who rolled his eyes saying that it was a useless conversation. “I mean that my parents want you to train to be the Luna of the pack.”
Lia jerked her head back slightly. “How do you get trained to become the Luna of the pack?”
“It is intense training. As the Luna you would be responsible for several jobs. Like looking after the charity that my parents run, looking after the pack needs, help us with treasury and also have warrior training.”
Lia blinked her eyes once and then twice. “In that case I better go for a Masters in Business Administration after my graduation.”
Arthur smacked his head. He shook his head. “You are starting school tomorrow. Let’s just focus on finishing school first!”
“Cool!” Lia replied and went back to writing as Hawk laughed quietly at Arthur. He shook his head as if telling him that this was a futile conversation. Arthur got up from his chair and went to lie next to Lia after pulling a pillow from the other side. He curled his arm across her waist, buried his face on the side of her c*hest and closed his eyes, inhaling her soothing scent. Both the brothers were dying to release their tension but didn’t want to hurt her. She had been in such a big accident that they were thankful to the goddess that she survived.
Before she packed up for the night, she declared, “I will be going home tomorrow to meet Lena and Shiloh.”
“We are going to go with you,” Arthur said in a voice so commanding that Lia immediately felt compelled to obey. Next day at school, when Lia stepped out of the car with Hawk and Arthur, she saw Gwen and Tabatha waiting for them. Gwen had surprise etched all over her face while Tabatha watched her with a cold glare. They ignored her and focused on the twins.
“Hawk!” Tabatha called him. “How are you?”
“Arthur!” Gwen rushed to him and stopped him in his tracks. “Where have you been? The school was so lonely without you.”
A crease formed on his forehead when he stopped. But he halted with Lia’s h*and in his. “What do you want?” he growled.
“N—nothing,” she said. “I just-”
He walked past her, pulling Lia with him. Hawk followed them without even looking at the two. They sat in the class at their usual positions. But the fleas came up to them and sat in the chairs in front of them.
This time Gwen looked at Lia and said, “How are you feeling?”
Lia poked her t*ongue in her cheek. “I am well.”
“That scar over there,” she pointed to the bandage on her forehead. “It’s going to take a long time to heal because you are a human. I can see several blue marks on your n*eck and cheeks also.”
Lia knew what she was getting at. “So?” she shrugged.
“I mean if you like I can give you a cream that would cover those hideous marks,” Gwen said, taken aback by her nonchalant reply.
“No thanks. I don’t have time. I have to go to my parents’ place after school.” She implied that she was staying with Hawk and Arthur. And that did just the effect she wanted. Gwen appeared green. “Oh!” Tabatha said. “Why?”
“Because I was with them for the past two days.” She turned to Arthur. “Hey, that reminds me. Mom sent me a text saying that she would send a driver to pick me up.”
“Damn baby girl!” Arthur didn’t like it. “We said we will take you there.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Lia chuckled. “I will go with the driver.” She k*issed him on his l*ips. “I will come back in the evening.”
“This won’t happen,” Hawk protested.
“This will happen,” Lia replied in that mulish way of hers.
“Well, I think you should allow her to go like that if she wants to,” Tabatha said with a nervousness in her voice. The teacher came in and they forgot about the conversation. For the rest of the day, Lia, Hawk and Arthur were together. They were inseparable and maintained their distance from Gwen and Tabatha. Lia noticed that Robert still hadn’t come back. She was tempted to ask about him, but she forgot as she had a lot to catch up on. It was in the evening that she sat in the car with an assurance to the twins that she would return as soon as possible to the castle.
As she drove, she took the same road. As soon as they reached the intersection, she said, “Stop!” The driver put the brake on the car and screeched to a halt. She saw a truck parked on the right corner of the intersection, beneath a canopy of trees. Taking a deep breath in, she opened the door and stepped out. The truck’s ignition was on and the person behind the tinted glass was revving up the engine. She crossed her arms across her c*hest and narrowed her eyes on the truck. Suddenly, the driver of the truck released his brake and sped towards her. She sprinted to the left and veered right and heard the sound of a big collision. The driver shrieked as he jumped out of the car which got smashed by the truck. “Come here, Miss Lia,” he yelled at her. Suddenly, a Lycan jumped out of the woods and dashed towards her with the fangs and claws jutted out.
Dread exploded in her c*hest when she saw the Lycan. It let out a guttural sound and lunged at her. Lia covered her face with her arms and ducked, bracing for the impact but the impact never came. She saw two other Lycans that had appeared out of nowhere and had attacked it. Instinctively she knew that they were Hawk and Arthur. It was needless to say that she was imp**ssed by their sizes and strangely attracted to them in their feral form. Almost immediately, she saw Asher rushing in with his warriors. They climbed the truck and dragged the driver out of it. Lia was shocked to see that the driver was a woman. The woman glared at her. “Bloody c*unt!” she spat. “Leave me! Leave me!” Lia’s attention went to the Lycans who were tackling the culprit. All of them had shifted back to their human form. Lia’s surprise had no end when she saw that the culprit was none other than Tabatha. “You?” Lia rasped.
Arthur spat blood from his m*outh. “And that is her aunt who was supposedly in the hospital when you were admitted.”
Tabatha was brought to the dungeons of the castle by the warriors along with her aunt. They were both shackled in chains.
Arthur and Hawk were seething. They had so much fury in them that they seemed to shift into their wolves and Lycans every other time. Their beasts wanted to k*ill Tabatha and rip her limb by limb. Their furs would ripple over their arms and back as their beasts warred inside them to be let out.
Hunter and River had to be present there along with their sons to stop the mayhem. They knew that the twins would not stop at Tabatha. They would go after their families also. The rage in them was uncontrollable. “Go to Lia!” Hunter ordered them. “She must be shaking with fear!”
“I am not!” Lia’s controlled voice came as she entered the dungeon and entered the prison where Tabatha was. She came to stand in the middle of the brother and placed her palms on their forearms. “Shhh… calm down…” she mumbled under her breath and stroked them softly. The twins soothed down and shifted back to their human forms. Arthur grabbed her waist and tucked her to his side as Hawk held her h*and in his. “Lia?” River’s concerned voice reached her ears. “Why are you here, sweetheart?”
“Aunt River,” Lia said softly. “I want to know why she went to such lengths…” Then she looked at Hunter. “Can I interrogate her?” She sought his permission.
“Sure,” Hunter allowed her. “But stay at least five to six feet away from her. Though she is shackled in silver, I don’t trust her.”
Lia nodded and stepped in front of Tabatha. Arthur and Hawk went to stand by her side protectively, their claws drawn out just in case Tabatha or her aunt tried to attack her.
“I have to say that Tabatha you are a moron,” Lia started.
Tabatha hissed. “And you are a b*itch! You came into my life and turned it upside down.” A dangerous growl from Arthur made her balk in fear. She whimpered and scuttled back.
Lia chuckled but her chuckle didn’t reach her eyes. She avoided her remark. “When I was going to my parents’ house a week back, how did you come to know that I would go in my car and not with Arthur and Hawk?” Tabatha averted her gaze with a scoff.
“Well, let me tell you. You sneaked on our conversation all the time. While both you and Gwen were showing that you weren’t interested, you both had ears on what we were talking about,” Lia pointed. “I had informed my mates that I will take my car and so your plan started rolling. You wanted to k*ill me. You thought that after k*illing me, my mates would get dep**ssed, but they would eventually come out because you would be around them and help them out of their dep**ssion.”
Hawk’s growl made the bars of the prison shake. His Lycan again tried to break free but Hunter came from behind and stopped him. “Wait son, Lia is here. You don’t want to hurt her.” Hawk tampered his Lycan down after a lot of effort.
Lia continued, “You bribed my driver to take me through that route. Your aunt—” she glanced at the woman shackled in chains on the left. “She was ready with the truck to hit the car. You were waiting for my car to reach there in your Lycan form. As soon as my car reached, you rushed to your aunt and signaled her. The way the truck hit my car, you were sure that I would die, but nothing serious happened.” She crossed her arms across her c*hest. “Now how was it possible that while I lay in bruises and a concussion on a hospital bed, the driver escaped with minor injuries despite the fact that the collision occurred on his side? Do you know that he was discharged in just a day or two?”
“You can conjure any theory you like!” Tabatha spat.
“No conjuring theories. It was simple to understand. The driver knew that you were about to collide with us so he swiveled the car in a way that the collision came to my side. Because the car swiveled, it tumbled and I was saved. If he hadn’t swiveled the car in the opposite direction, I would have been crushed. Your aunt panicked and she reversed the truck and sped off.”
“Goddess!” River breathed, unable to believe it. “How do you know all this?”
Lia looked at Asher who came to give her a pen drive. “It’s all in this video recording.” She h*anded the pen drive to River. “Once I was admitted to the hospital, you came there and met Arthur. You said that you were visiting your aunt in the hospital which would have been your perfect alibi, but—” She held Arthur’s h*and and tugged him. “He identified your scent in the woods along with Asher and his team. Did you think they were so naive?” Tabatha paled at the mention of it.
