“But there’s one other thing that I wanted to say.”
“We know,” River replied with a grin. “You will go to college after school.”
“No, I won’t go,” she said in a low voice. Everyone in the room grew quiet. Lia fidgeted with her f*ingers in her lap. “I tried to convince myself that I could go, but how can I without Arthur? It would be like leaving a part of my soul here.” She lifted her eyelashes to look at him and found him staring at her intensely. “I can’t live without either of you. I understand that you have to be with Alpha Hunter and so I’ve decided that I will also stay here.”
“What about your dream of going to college?” River asked.
Lia couldn’t answer that. Her vision got blurry and she lowered her eyes. Thick drops of tears fell from them. Hawk instantly came to sit by her side and pulled her in his lap. “Baby girl?”
“I can’t-” she shook her head. “It’s impossible to think of a life without him. So I have decided to stay here.”
“Geez! That’s heavy!” Gabriel rasped as Tina and Gina also went to sit next to Lia. While Elijah looked relaxed, Mia and Hunter were perturbed.
Arthur stabbed his f*ingers in his hair. He let out a rough exhale. He got up and walked out to breathe in fresh air. It was painful to see his mate crying over something that wasn’t in his control. As the elder son of his parents, he had to take care of his Alpha duties. Feeling too t*ight in his c*hest, he let his wolf out and loped into the woods.
For the whole day, Arthur didn’t come back. Lia paced her room as Hawk watched her. She had come back to her room because the air in the living room was stifling. No one said anything against her and supported her, but the guilt of putting Arthur in so much agony distressed her.
“Baby girl, sit down…” Hawk said in an exasperated voice. “Why are you so agitated? Arthur needs to think about the whole situation.”
She stopped and covered her face with her h*ands. She shook her head. “This is not what I thought it would be. I thought he would be happy with my decision.” She almost felt like crying.
“I know Arthuif Hawk said, getting up. He closed the distance between them and hugged her from behind. “He will come back soon, but he needs to think about the whole situation. To be honest we had both talked about you. He was preparing himself for you to leave him and go to college.”
“What?” Lia was surprised. “What do you mean preparing himself?”
Hawk took a deep breath in. “Amongst werewolves, once you’ve marked your mate, it is very difficult to leave him or her. I don’t know how humans feel about it but werewolves become too possessive… almost to the level of insanity about their mates. It’s like half of your soul resides in your mate. So imagine when your mate is away, how would you feel? Arthur is feeling the same and he has been tampering his feelings to-’’ his t*hroat bobbed. “To let you go…” Hawk turned her towards him and placed his h*ands on her shoulders. “But you have sacrificed it all for him. It was a curveball he didn’t expect at all.” He pulled her to his c*hest and hugged her. “I am not as brave as him when it concerns you. I can’t stay away from you. It’s impossible and that’s why I chose to come with you. At the same time, I can’t goad Arthur to stay here or come with us.”
Lia closed her eyes as emotions churned in the pit of her stomach. Leaving Arthur behind was painful and that’s why she made a conscious decision of staying back. She buried her face in his c*hest and realized that was crying when his shirt became wet.
“Baby girl?” Hawk lifted her chin up. He wiped her tears. “Don’t cry.” But he knew why she was crying.
“Can you take me to Arthur? I want to see him and talk to him. Please?” She grabbed his shirt. “I want to ride Bolt because I want to reach Titan as soon as possible.”
A low rumble of approval emanated from his c*hest. “Anything for you baby girl.” Hawk held her h*and and walked out to the balcony. “Do you trust me?” he asked, tracing his f*ingers on her l*ips.
“Absolutely.”
“Then mount me as soon as I shift.”
“Out here?” She scanned the balcony.
“Yes,” he chuckled and the next moment he took a few steps back. He shifted into his wolf and dipped his head low.
Lia giggled, loving his wolf. She scratched the star over his head. “Bolt, you are more beautiful than Hawk.” A purr was Bolt’s approval. He lowered his b*ody for her to ride him. As soon as she was sitting on him, he got up. She wrapped her arms around his body, pressing herself to him and closed her eyes. “Don’t make me fall,” she murmured. Bolt took off the next moment. She stifled a scream when she found herself in the air. Bolt leaped over the railing and landed on his fours with perfection. “Wow!” she rasped. “You are something!” And Bolt took off. He loped into the woods, sniffing Titan’s scent.
Lia was surprised at the sheer speed with which Bolt ran inside the forest. She had gripped him h*ard. He had such soft fur that she could keep her f*inger sunk in it forever. She could feel his solid muscles rippling beneath her t*highs.
The forest passed in a blur as Bolt ran through the narrow path, jumping over the fallen logs, small brooks, meandering through the maze of tall trees and leaping over boulders. They must have run for an hour before they reached a small lake and it was then that Bolt slowed down to a trot.
“Is he around?” she asked. Bolt scanned the lake as if looking for his brother. He pointed his snout to the right towards a willow whose branches gently lapped the water. Lia looked in that direction and found Titan staring at them with his golden eyes. “I want to get down,” she said and Bolt lowered himself. She dismounted and as soon as she hopped on the ground, she sprinted to Titan. “Titan!” she called him.
Titan couldn’t remove his amber gaze from her as he watched her coming to him. He had gone still, unable to believe that she would come after him. His c*hest rumbled with a growl that came out as a purr.
Lia lunged at him when she reached him and hugged him h*ard, wrapping her arms around his n*eck and c*hest. “I missed you so much!” she breathed, burying her face in his silky black fur. It was then that Lia realized that she made the right decision. “I can’t live without you,” she muttered against his fur, tears rolling down. They sat like that for a long time with neither of them moving. Titan was extremely restless but as soon as his mate was with him, his anxiety vanished. He l*icked her as if asking her not to cry. Hawk came and stood behind her at a distance to let her be with Arthur. He knew that she was feeling better now.
She got up and caught his face in her h*ands. “Don’t you ever do this again. I was worried. I want you to stay by my side. Whatever your problem is, let me know, okay? We will solve it together.”
Titan lowered his b*ody as if asking her to sit down on him. She chuckled and mounted him. “Let’s go home.” However, instead of heading home, Titan galloped in the opposite direction. She squealed, “Where are you taking me?” Hawk joined his brother and together they seemed to run in a particular direction, deeper into the woods. They came to stop in front of a cave’s m*outh. Lia gasped. “What is this place?” The m*outh of the cave was covered with vines that blossomed with blue flowers. Their intoxicating scent wafted in the air and she inhaled it deeply in her lungs as if to memorize it.
Titan walked inside the cave along with her. She clutched his hair t*ightly, scared at first wondering if she would encounter bats or other beasts, but a growl that rumbled from his c*hest assured her that the only beasts she should be scared of were the two wolves walking with her. And they were her mates.
As he padded his way inside, the cave grew darker and darker, until they reached a place where soft light filled it from a hole carved in the stone above. Right beneath the hole was a small pool with water so clear that she could see the various hued fish swimming inside against the azure bottom.
“Oh. My. God!” she breathed as she dismounted him when he lowered himself. She scanned the little cave as she walked to the pool. When she was at its edge, she felt a slight nudge from behind and before she knew it, she was inside the water with a splash. She screamed, cursing Hawk. But the next moment she heard another splash. Strong arms grabbed her waist and brought her to the surface of water. She clung to Arthur’s n*eck and waist like a koala. “Hawk!” she screamed at him, whipping her head at him. He was n*aked. She blushed. He laughed and dived in the water. Soon he emerged behind her. “I am going to whip you!” she yelled.
