“Has Hawk arrived?”
“Nope!”
Her heart thundered in her c*hest. Why hadn’t Hawk come yet? This was getting worrisome. She tossed the blanket aside, hopped out of the bed and rushed to the bathroom.
Hunter and River were in the main conference hall of the hotel they were all staying in. Elijah, Mia, Asher, Shawn and Lena were also present. When Arthur and Lia arrived, Hunter was deep in conversation. “The Elders have all come,” he said. “It is Elder Gregory of the former Crescent ack who showed him that paper.”
“I can’t understand what it is with the Elders of the Crescent pack!” River slammed the table. “Why can t they just come to terms that the packs have merged?” She looked away, irritated as hell.
Hunter held her h*and beneath the table. “It’s fine love. Don’t fret so much. We will look for a solution.” They all discussed it for a few more minutes.
The meeting venue was quiet. Except Alpha Brom’s Beta, his wife and ten other warriors that Hunter presumed held senior positions in the pack, there was no one else. No other Alpha had come for the meeting and it was clear that they didn’t support the old treaty.
Nervous, Lia grabbed Arthur’s h*and after giving one last look at the gardens and the lobby to see if Hawk had come. He still hadn’t and her worries only increased.
The meeting room was full. The seven Elders were sitting around a table. Hunter and River went to sit on the right along with Elijah whereas Alpha Brom sat along with his Beta, Trig on the left. His wife wasn’t present, but that wasn’t a surprise. Arthur sat along with Lia and Mia on chairs behind his parents. He wasn’t allowed on the main table which was reserved only for the Alphas, Lunas and Betas.
There was a complete silence until everyone was settled. It was then that Elder Wyn, who was heading the council, spoke. “Thank you for coming here. Alpha Brom has pointed out a clause in the treaty that our ancestors had penned a long time back and it is very serious. According to that clause, no two packs can merge until the Alphas challenge each other and win it over. That is why in the case of the Dark Moon pack, the pack has to split into its former packs: Dark Moon pack and Crescent pack. If you have to merge the two packs, then Alpha Hunter or Alpha River have to challenge each other. And whosoever wins in the fight will take over.”
“This is ridiculous!” River snapped. “Do you want the mates to fight each other?”
“No, I don’t want them to fight,” Alpha Brom intervened. “I really don’t want the mates to fight each other. That would be against nature. But-” His l*ips lifted in an ominous smile. “You should split the pack to its former glory. And that is how the treaty will be honored.”
“The whole point of merging the packs was because we both got married and wanted to stay with each other!” River countered.
“If I remember, you took over the pack after challenging and k*illing Alpha Maxim,” Brom pointed out. “That was well within the laws of the council. But after that without consulting any of the Elders, you two just decided to merge the packs. You can’t do that. You have to take permission from the Elders or divide the pack again.”
“This is horrible!” River shouted. “I propose that we change the treaty and form a new one. Why will I divide my family? Besides, the merger of my pack with that of Dark Moon has only impacted it in the best way. My people have benefitted immensely from this merger. Alpha Hunter has constructed world-class townships and schools. We are also planning to build our own college. We are thinking of progress and you want to take us back to the dark ages!” River said in an accusatory tone.
Brom chuckled. “Why don’t you split the pack according to the treaty? The solution to the problem is simple. You have two sons. Hawk can take over the Crescent pack while Arthur can take over the Dark Moon pack. Why are you fretting over it? It’s not like that the packs will be abandoned or I am doing it for personal reasons. It’s just that I want all of us to abide by the laws that our ancestors laid. What is so bad about it?” He looked at the Elders. “Please correct me if I am wrong.” He sounded pretty casual.
The Elders nodded. They couldn’t counteract Brom. In fact, none could. They looked at Hunter for an argument against it, but Hunter was quiet. He was staring at Brom, completely confused by his words. Brom didn’t have any ulterior motive. He had come here only to point out that the treaty has to be honored.
“Is there anything you want to say?” Elder Wyn asked.
“If it’s okay with the council, may I suggest something?” Lia said softly, noticing Trig shifting in his place.
Before Elder Wyn could say anything, Brom snapped at her. “I am sorry but no one is allowed to talk in between this meeting!”
Lia gulped. Why was he so hostile towards her? But she gathered her courage and addressed Elder Wyn. “Since this decision will directly affect me in the future, I request the council to grant me permission to speak.” The Elders looked at each other while Brom scowled at her. She kept her eyes on the Elders, hoping they would give her a chance to speak. The best part was that all her family members supported her and didn’t give her judgmental glances. After a few minutes of murmurs, Elder Wyn said, “You may speak.”
Lia took a deep breath in. “Since Alpha Brom has asked to split the pack, it is going to affect me. We all know that Arthur and Hawk are my mates. How will I be able to become their Luna? How can I be present in both the packs at one time? I will have to divide my time and it is possible that I am not present when I am needed. It would be-”
“Then why don’t you reject Hawk?” Brom said through his gritted teeth. “That way you will stay with one mate and allow the other to work properly.”
“What?” Lia blurted, shocked.
Arthur growled at Brom, standing up from his chair. “Keep your m*outh shut, Alpha Brom or else I will challenge you!”
Brom clenched his jaws as he narrowed his eyes on him. “That would be even better, Arthur.” The way he replied to her, Lia couldn’t help but suspect that Brom had some ulterior motive. She placed her h*and on Arthur’s arm to soothe him and then she asked Brom, “Why are you suggesting that Hawk become the Alpha of the Crescent pack? I mean who are you to suggest it?”
Brom’s muscles coiled visibly. “It was just a suggestion. Who cares if the reverse happens?”
“In that case, please be clear and have it etched in your mind,” she growled. “I will never reject any of my mates!”
Lia became quiet for a moment. Then she turned her attention back to the Elders. “If the pack splits, it will affect the businesses also. My father, Shawn Mendez, has an upcoming hotel in the Pine pack in our chain called Blue Sapphire. It is highly likely that the hotel won’t come up because then I would ask him and my mother, Lena to focus on the Crescent pack’s business. This means that whatever businesses we have with the surrounding packs, which amounts to gargantuan money and investments, we will be cutting it off.” It was a mild threat to Alpha Brom that they would sever business ties with him. And she could see the effect of her threat on Brom. His jaw set in a h*ard line. She continued, “So, I propose that the treaty be amended so that everyone flourishes in a good economy.”
Brom leaned forward. He crossed his arms on the table. “Lia, are you threatening me?” She shrugged.
Hunter chuckled, “I support her completely and I know that her father, Shawn, will support her blindly.” Gritting his teeth, Brom leaned back in his chair. “Do all you want,” he glowered. “But the treaty should be honored.” The Elders nodded. “Alpha Brom is right,” Wyn said.
All of a sudden, Arthur and Lia caught the smell of Hawk’s shampoo. “Hawk is here!” Lia rasped.
The doors opened and Maggie walked in. “Hello Lia,” she cooed, flicking her hair.
“Come, sit here Maggie,” Brom patted the chair beside him. Maggie bowed to the Elders. “This is my daughter,” Brom introduced her.
Lia’s jaws dropped.
