Alex stood up and declared, “How to prove it? Give me some time! I’ll prove it on River’s behalf!”
Noah’s eyes flashed with sarcasm as Alex hurried out of the villa. ‘Didn’t I search for evidence? It’s a shame it disappeared on the day of the incident!”
The next day, after an entire night of searching for evidence, Alex lay on his bed and received a call from Paige. He intended to make a lie for the situation but accidentally answered the call.
“Pug! What’s the explanation? You disappeared all night! Can’t you give a simple explanation?”
Paige shouted.
Alex scratched his head and sat up, looking exhausted. “Please calm down and hear me out.”
Paige anger eased upon hearing Alex’s weary voice. “Okay, go ahead.”
Alex took a deep breath “Paige, I owe you an apology. The factory isn’t mine.”
“What? But you told me it was yours!” Paige exclaimed.
Alex couldn’t hide the truth any longer. He had initially tried to locate the journalist, but the latter had vanished with his family and changed his contact details. It seemed like an invisible force. was at play, preventing him from finding any leads
“The factory belongs to Noah. He asked me to lease it to River,” Alex confessed.
Paige scoffed. “So, you were planning to keep this from me forever if Noah hadn’t terminated the lease?”
“Noah wouldn’t have taken back the lease if his mother wasn’t involved in the accident,” Alex explained.
Paige said, “How is this related to River? She’s already blaming herself for what happened. What more does Noah want?”
“I know it’s not related, but I searched for clues all night,” Alex replied.
“Did you find anything?” Paige asked.
Alex sighed. “No.”
“So, it’s settled then. Because you couldn’t find anything, it’s River’s fault that Noah’s mother died,” Paige concluded.
Alex reluctantly accepted the harsh reality. He knew Noah well enough to understand that if anyone else were in River’s shoes, he would have subjected them to severe torment even with the slightest suspicion
Noah had shown mercy to River by merely reclaiming what was rightfully his.
Paige said, “There’s nothing more to say, right? Enjoy your life with your best friend. Goodbye!”
Paige hung up before Alex could respond.
At TYC.
Kenny was on the phone as he hurried into the building and accidentally collided with someone while turning a corner.
The woman’s folders were scattered on the ground, prompting Kenny to quickly end his call and help pick them up. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Naomi replied casually.
Kenny recognized her as the woman River mentioned had been transferred to the HR department. “River told me you’ve been transferred. That’s great!”
Naomi nodded.
As they gathered the folders, Kenny asked, “I heard you’re still overseeing the old factory project?“.
Naomi confirmed, “Ms. Healy didn’t reassign me, so I’m still monitoring the project’s quality and/
progress.”
Curious, Kenny asked, “How long until the project is completed?”
Naomi looked at him. “Is there a problem?”
Kenny sighed in frustration. “The current factory is terminating our lease abruptly. You know River; she won’t accept any factory that doesn’t meet her standards. Moreover, we still have a backlog of orders to fulfill. Do you understand the urgency?”
Naomi looked concerned. “The factory’s lease is being terminated? If that happens, we risk losing our clients‘ trust due to the delayed orders.”
Kenny said, “Ms. Lynch, why won’t you answer me?”
Naomi said, “The renovation will take at least a month.”
Kenny frowned “A month isn’t too long, but the factory is giving us a week to vacate the place. The remaining time is the issue!”
Naomi kept quiet, and Kenny did not speak further.
Kenny called up River when he returned to the office.
River picked up and said anxiously. “Have you checked with the factory manager on the inventory quantity, Kenny?”
Kenny said, “I did. We don’t have any inventory because the order quantity is too high!”
For the first time, River felt having a high order quantity was not a good thing.
Alex had yet to update her about the factory situation, so she had no idea what her next step should be.
Kenny leaned against the chair and said, “When will you be back, G? I don’t feel confident without you.”
River checked her injuries. “A week…”
“So long? Have you reached out to the factory owner? What did they say?” Kenny asked.
River said, “They have yet to answer me.”
“Fuck! Are they playing tricks on us?” Kenny snapped.
“Not really. It is well–written in the contract that the penalty for breaking the contract is three. times the rent. It’s unnecessary for them to play a trick on us at the loss of their money.”
“They just want to go against us then!” Kenny snarled.
“Yes. Did the people who come to the factory tell you to vacate the place in a week?”
Kenny said, “Yes! However, it’s not easy to lease another factory in a week. You should know that our fabric is just at a self–sufficient level. If we are looking to lease a factory, we need one for textile production and another for clothing production!”
River kept quiet and said after a long while, “Hmm, understood. I’ll figure out a way.”
“Sure. I’m here. Don’t worry! Oh, right, remember to call the children at night because they miss you badly.”
“Sure.”
River’s gaze landed on the bandage on her body after hanging up.
She pondered for a while and grabbed her phone. She was about to call the factory owner to inquire when she received an unknown number’s call.
River picked up the call. “Hello.”
“Ms. Healy, this is Officer Raymond Holt from Novamere’s public security sub–bureau. The legal process on the case of Jade Healy and Gregory Laweson’s theft and Brandon Healy’s extortion have been completed. Do you intend to settle privately or go through legal procedures on your end?
River had almost forgotten about the Healys‘ case. “I don’t want to settle privately, sir. We shall go through the legal procedures to determine the guilt and liability.”
Raymond said, “Sure. The remaining issue will be on the house and car. May I inquire if you.
purchased those for them willingly?”
River said, “No.”
“Alright. They will be sentenced according to law,” Raymond said and hung up.
River then called Jayden Clothing’s factory owner.
After a long time, the person finally answered. The man’s laughter echoed through the phone before he spoke. “Wow, it’s been quite some time, Ms. Healy. I’ve heard your business is thriving lately!”
River replied, “My small company can’t compare to yours, Mr. Curry. I’m calling because I’m in.
trouble, aren’t I?”
Jayden Curry responded. “Ms. Healy, it’s not the right way to discuss this, is it?”
“That’s not the case, Mr. Curry. Are you free tonight? Let’s meet up in Regal Restaurant over dinner,
*River said smilingly.
Jayden said, “I can’t decline your generous invitation, can I?‘
River said, “I shall send the private room reservation to your phone later.”
“Sure!”
The smile on River’s face faded after hanging up.
