As the video played, Pam’s face became even paler, and she looked at Natalie ever more furiously. Natalie, on the other hand, looked on impassively, but what she saw in the video made her feel even more sorry for Liam.
When the video playback finished, Natalie said coolly, “Well, Principal McKenzie, that makes it completely clear what happened. Liam was maliciously pushed down the stairs and injured, and he has subsequently been falsely accused and slandered. I hope you can give me a satisfactory explanation of this matter and tell me what you are going to do about it.”
The principal couldn’t help but admire Natalie. He looked obsequiously at her and said, “You are quite right. Since this incident happened inside the school, we certainly owe a clear explanation and a just outcome to you.” Then he turned to Pam and said, “Mrs. Barnard, I’m afraid that it has become necessary to expel your child. Please go to the administration department to handle the formalities.”
The crowd turned to look at Pam, wondering how she was going to deal with this decision. Pam’s face flushed red with anger. Woodling Academy was one of the most prestigious schools in the country, and she was angry because the principal’s decision would reflect badly on the reputation of the Barnard family. Heartily, she said, “Ah, Principal, I think you should consider the consequences of this action. Are you really prepared to be so disrespectful towards my family?” Pam narrowed her eyes threateningly.
Nick, anxious that his nephew was about to be expelled, said, “Principal McKenzie, please think again. I think there must have been some kind of misunderstanding here. Don’t you agree?” With that, he glanced at Natalie. He still hadn’t given up on framing Liam.
Everyone looked at the principal, curious about what would happen next. After all, the Barnards were rich and powerful. Could the principal really afford to incur their displeasure?
Principal McKenzie said impatiently, “I’m afraid the evidence of the surveillance recording is damning and incontrovertible, as everyone was able to see for themselves. Given the clarity and strength of the evidence, I can make no other decision than to expel Donnie.”
With that, Principal McKenzie turned to Natalie and said, “On behalf of the school, I apologize to you and Liam over this matter and the way that Mrs. Calligan dealt with it. We have caused you unnecessary suffering.”
The principal’s attitude made Natalie’s expression soften a little. She gave a faint nod in response.
Now that the onlookers could see the facts of the situation, they couldn’t help but take Natalie’s part. One parent, who didn’t have a good relationship with the Barnards, even called out, “Now that the truth is clear, Mrs. Barnard, you should take your child and leave the school quickly before you harm any other children.”
Someone else shouted, “That’s right, leave now!” This quickly grew into a consensus view. Pam’s son Donnie had suddenly become the center of everyone’s attention and antipathy. Although he had pushed Liam, he was still a child and had just been doing what his parents had told him to do. He had never been in such a horrible situation before. He began to sob. Pam hugged her son and looked at the crowd angrily, shouting, “Enough! Leave the boy alone!”
Natalie said coldly, “I feel that this child is still too young to understand the consequences of his actions. After all, it must have been the adults who instigated the attack. Isn’t that right, Pam?” She glanced at Pam with a fake smile, the ridicule on her face obvious.
Pam’s face turned bright red, but she couldn’t say a single word in rebuttal. Although she was trembling with rage, she swallowed her anger and said to Nick, “Let’s go. It’s just a crappy school. We don’t want to stay here.”
With that, she left, carrying the sobbing Donnie in her arms. All the way to her car, she looked back at Natalie with hatred and anger.
Nick hadn’t expected things to turn out this way, and he couldn’t conceal his anger no matter how hard he tried. He glared at Natalie and warned her in a low voice, “You will regret what has happened here today.” Then the Barnard siblings drove off dejectedly. They seemed to be fleeing the scene of a crime, guiltily.
Natalie watched them go. She’d like to know what kind of tricks they would try to come up with now. The principal let out a long sigh of relief, glad that this unpleasant scene was over. His gaze inadvertently settled on Bryce’s ostentatious car as he said to Natalie, “This was a matter of negligence on the part of our school. I’m very sorry for the harm we caused you and your child. I apologize sincerely.”
Natalie was about to reply when the principal continued, “I should also say that I have terminated Mrs. Calligan’s employment here. Now, please take Liam inside so that he can play with the other children. He’s a very popular young man.”
The children grew excited. A couple of little girls even ran up to Liam and hugged him. One of the girls said, “None of us thought Liam had lied about this. We all believe in Liam.”
When Liam heard this, his heart was filled with joy. And when Natalie saw that the anxiety had lifted from young Liam’s shoulders, the worry that had been afflicting her finally subsided.
She was ready to leave, but as she got into Bryce’s car, Liam ran after her and called out, “Mom! Dad! Wait for me!” The principal put his hand on Liam’s shoulder and bent down to say something in his ear. Liam listened respectfully, then looked over at the car and said sadly, “Bye, Daddy. Mommy.”
The remaining bystanders took in this touching scene and thought even more badly of Pam Barnard’s deceit and manipulation of an innocent child. They realized that Liam had a father and that, judging by his car, that father must be rich and powerful. Natalie saw Liam’s little hand waving them goodbye before he turned around and walked back towards the school with the principal.
