“No, we’re headed to the hospital for his statement. You can see him there.”
River expressed her gratitude and departed for Novamere Hospital.
At Xander Residence’s living room.
Neil and Yuliana chatted with Grayson, but Daniella was absent.
Grayson frequently checked the time, growing increasingly agitated as dinner time neared with no sign of
Daniella.
“I don’t want to wait any longer. We’ll eat without her if she’s not back soon,” Grayson grumbled.
Thomas exchanged a meaningful look with Greta, who gently tried to persuade Grayson. “Dad, let’s wait a little longer. It’s normal for her to be delayed during the evening rush hour.”
“Mom, why are you-”
Greta silenced Yuliana with a glance. “Yulia, go check if your cousin is home.”
Although Yuliana did not consider Daniella a true cousin, she reluctantly got up after seeing Grayson’s displeasure. She donned a coat and walked to the door.
When the servant opened the door, a bright headlight briefly blinded her. She squinted as the light abruptly faded.
Daniella opened the car door and approached with a click–clack of her footsteps.
When she spotted Yuliana standing at the door, she greeted her with a smile, asking. “Are you here to welcome me?”
Yuliana’s gaze hardened. “You did this on purpose, didn’t you? You turned on the headlights when you saw me come out.”
“How can you say that?” Daniella retorted, “I just didn’t manage to turn them off.”
“But the car wasn’t even moving! You’re lying.”
Daniella sneered sarcastically. “You were just unlucky. Don’t blame me.”
With that, she pushed past Yuliana and entered the living room..
“Grandpa, I’m home!” Her voice brought an immediate smile to Grayson’s face.
Neil kept checking the time, wondering why River hadn’t arrived yet.
When Neil texted River, Grayson invited everyone to the dining room.
Neil: [Where are you, River?]
River had just arrived at the emergency room and quickly checked her phone when she heard the notification.
She inwardly sighed after reading Neil’s text because she had forgotten to inform him about Scott’s accident.
River: [I can’t come, Neil. Scott had a car accident and is in the hospital.]
Her text left Neil deeply perplexed. ‘Why is everything going wrong when River wants to get rid of Daniella?
Grayson entered the dining room but encouraged Nell to follow when he saw him standing still. “Neil, aren’t you coming?”
Reluctantly, Neil put his phone down and followed Grayson Into the dining room.
River located Scott’s ward in the emergency room.
Scott lay in bed, his white shirt stained with dried blood and his head bandaged.
A nurse approached when River took her seat and scrutinized her. “Are you Dr. Wilson’s girlfriend?”
River moved aside as she noticed the nurse carrying an infusion bag. “Yes.”
The nurse disinfected the back of Scott’s hand. “Dr. Wilson is so kind to you! He just finished a five– hour surgery today, yet he came straight to you without a break or even a sip of water,”
River looked up, shocked. “Five hours?” she repeated.
Why hadn’t Scott told her? She wouldn’t have asked him to pick her up, let alone accompany her to the
Xanders, if she had known.
Feeling upset and guilty, she wondered what she had done to deserve Scott’s numerous sacrifices.
The nurse hooked up an IV drip and turned to River. “Yes, he was the lead surgeon for those full five hours. I hope you’ll take good care of him as his girlfriend. Otherwise, you don’t deserve to be with him.”
The nurse departed, leaving River in bewilderment.
How could she call herself Scott’s girlfriend?
Half an hour later, the police officers arrived at the ward.
River suggested talking to them outside the ward to avoid disturbing Scott’s rest.
“We have the suspect at the police station. Ms. Healy, please come with us and discuss the accident.”
River asked, “Can you take the victim’s statement later?”
“One of the officers will wait until he wakes up.”
River nodded. “Okay, I’ll go with you.”
Afterward, she rose and left, asking the nurses to look after Scott as she passed their station.
Ten minutes later, River entered the police station and saw the suspect talking to the officers in the interrogation room.
River’s eyes widened in shock when she saw the person.
“This is the culprit, Finn Leaver,” the police officer said.
“I know him!” River replied, her voice deep.
Finn had worked as Noah’s bodyguard in the past, and she had encountered him on multiple occasions, but he was fired five years ago.
Finn looked up, meeting River’s eyes with slight astonishment. “Ms. Healy…”
River turned to the police officers and asked, “Can I speak to him alone for a moment?”
The officers exchanged glances, then stood up and said, “You can talk first. Signal the camera if you need assistance.”
River nodded, and the officers left the room.
Soon after, she sat across from Finn and said, “I can’t believe you just happened to hit Scott’s car.”
Finn frowned. “What do you mean, Ms. Healy?”
“Let’s not beat around the bush. Is this related to Noah?” River asked directly.
Finn seemed evasive, turning away and saying, “No.”
River’s frustration grew. “You’re lying!”
“Mr. De Marco has fired me, so why would I still work for him?” Finn replied.
River studied him closely. “Then why did you avoid eye contact earlier?”
Finn’s tone softened. “I take responsibility for my actions. There’s no need to involve Mr. De Marco.”
“Fine. Since you won’t admit it, I’ll find out the truth on my own. If I discover you did this on purpose, I won’t let you off,” River said coldly.
Finn became infuriated. “Are you overstepping. Ms. Healy? How is this your concern?”
“He’s my family. Do you think that’s not my concern?” River retorted.
Finn was astounded. “Uh.
Seeing that Finn was speechless, River stood up and declared, “We won’t accept a private settlement.
River left the interrogation room, seething with anger. She couldn’t understand Noah’s motives.
‘First Lily, then Axel, and now Scott! Why does he keep endangering those around me? she thought.
Unable to bear it any longer, River briefly spoke with the police before leaving the station to call Noah.
Meanwhile, Noah was at the hospital, trying to feed Axel some soup.
However, Axel vomited severely, coughing up bile.
Noah rubbed Axel’s back solemnly while Alex prepared a warm towel to clean Axel’s mouth.
Axel struggled to prop himself up and weakly shook his head. “I don’t want to eat it anymore, Daddy…”
Noah nodded sympathetically. “Alright, you don’t have to eat anymore. I’ll get you some fruits.”
Axel slowly nodded, lay back on the bed, and closed his eyes.
Alex felt his heart ache as he watched Axel, and he could only imagine Noah’s anguish.
Seeing the dark circles under Noah’s eyes, Alex suggested, “Noah, you should rest tonight.”
“No! You can go home and rest if you want,” Noah rejected.
“You haven’t slept more than eight hours in the past few days! If you keep this up, you’ll exhaust yourself before Axel recovers!” Alex insisted anxiously.
Noah was about to reply when his phone began to vibrate. He saw that River was calling, so he handed an orange to Alex. “Please handle this.”
Alex took the orange, and Noah wiped his hands before stepping out of the room to answer the call.
River’s angry voice was soon heard on the other end.
River asked, “Do you remember Finn?”
Noah paused briefly and replied, “Who’s that?”
River explained, “Finn Leaver, the bodyguard who worked for you a few years back. You fired him five years ago. Don’t tell me you forgot!”
“I don’t remember. Just tell me, I’m short on time.”
River sneered. “What are you avoiding?”
“What am I avoiding?” Noah asked, puzzled.
“Did you send Finn to crash Scott’s car?” River asked.
Noah’s expression turned serious. “Where are you?
River retorted, “Do you think I’d want to see you?”
Noah said, “If you want to discuss this, we’ll do it in person or not at all.”
