She wanted to rest, but her busy work and Casey’s threats kept her from getting proper rest. Moreover, Casey hadn’t replied to her messages, leaving her anxious.
Back in her office, River received a call from Paige.
River answered, sounding tired, “Paige.”
Paige was taken aback. “You don’t sound okay, River,”
River took a sip of water. “I’m alright. Why are you calling at this hour?”
Paige asked, “Can’t I call you without a reason? Are you free this afternoon? Can you accompany me to the hospital?”
River checked her work schedule, which Josie had sent her. “Sure, what time?”
“Hmm… 1:30 p.m.?” Paige suggested. “Let’s have lunch together before heading there.”
River responded with a simple “Okay.”
Worried about her sudden chest pain, River decided to have a checkup at the hospital.
After receiving the restaurant’s address via text from Paige, River swiftly grabbed her bag and left work.
Ten minutes later, she joined Paige at Table One and sat in a private room.
Paige sat beside River and eagerly extended her hand. “Look, River!”
River raised her head and noticed the ring on Paige’s middle finger. She asked, “Alex bought you a ring?”
Paige smiled warmly. “Yes, he wants to bind me to him. He’s quite the romantic.”
River sighed playfully. “Looks like I’ll need to prepare a big wedding gift for you.”
Paige affectionately held River’s arm and said, “Honestly, I’d appreciate anything as long as you’re with me.”
Then, her phone rang. Paige retrieved it from her bag and frowned upon seeing an unfamiliar number.
River leaned in and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Paige replied, “It’s an unknown number.”
She answered the call on speaker, saying, “Hello, who’s calling?”
A middle–aged woman’s voice echoed. “You must be Ms. Watson.”
Paige and River exchanged puzzled glances.
“Yes, I am,” Paige confirmed. “May I ask who’s calling?”
“I am Rebecca Gomez, Alex’s mother. Do you have time?” she replied.
Paige was stunned. “Hello, Ms. Gomez. Yes, I’m available. Let me treat you to a meal.”
“You can choose a restaurant,” Rebecca said.
Paige suggested, “How about Table One near MK, room 1067”
“Alright, I’ll be there shortly,” Rebecca said before ending the call.
Panicking, Paige turned to River. “River, why does Alex’s mother suddenly want to meet me? Do I look presentable enough?”
River looked at Paige helplessly. “Stay calm. You look fine.”
Clutching her head in her hands, Paige fretted, “No, I can’t be calm. Did Alex tell his mother about me? Is that why she wants to meet me out of the blue?”
River suggested, “Maybe you should try calling Alex and ask.”
“Oh, right. I’ll call him now,” Paige said and dialed Alex’s number, but he didn’t answer after a prolonged wait.
Paige grew increasingly worried. “Why isn’t he picking up? I’m so anxious!”
River tried to reassure Paige. “Maybe he’s busy. Why don’t you text him instead?”
Paige followed River’s advice and sent a text.
Fifteen minutes later, a dignified middle–aged woman entered their private room. She was dressed plainly but elegantly.
Paige and River both stood up, ready to greet her, but then they noticed another woman following her.
That woman was exceptionally beautiful with long, straight hair, radiating sophistication and grace.
Meanwhile, Rebecca appeared stern as she quietly pulled the younger woman into the room.
Without bothering with formalities, she held the young woman’s hand and sat in front of Paige and River.
Rebecca introduced herself, saying, “I’m Rebecca Gomez, Alex’s mother. This is Azure Miller.”
Paige nodded awkwardly and extended her hand. “Nice to meet you, Ms. Gomez, Ms. Miller.”
Rebecca glanced at Paige’s outstretched hand and responded indifferently. “Please, have a seat.”
River sensed trouble when Rebecca assumed a hosting role.
She and Paige resumed their seats, and Rebecca went straight to the point. “My son is engaged to Azure.
I kindly ask that you refrain from bothering him, Ms. Watson.”
Paige’s expression changed dramatically. “Engaged?”
Azure smiled politely and clarified, “To be precise, it’s an arranged marriage from our childhood.”
litely and Perplexed, Paige looked at Rebecca and asked, “If it’s an arranged marriage, why did you encourage Alex to go on blind dates?”
River quickly intervened, squeezing Paige’s hand to prevent any rash remarks.
Rebecca looked sternly at Paige. “Azure just returned from abroad, I only learned about this when her grandfather visited. He had mentioned arranging a marriage between Alex and Azure when they were young.”
River frowned deeply, realizing Rebecca was lying.
Paige noticed this too and was about to speak when River intervened. “Madam Price, does Alex know about this arranged marriage?”
Rebecca leered at River. “Who are you?”
River calmly replied, “I’m Paige’s friend.”
“You have no say in this,” Rebecca said, dismissing River. Ms. Watson can speak for herself.”
Paige became visibly upset. “Why couldn’t River say anything? She’s my best friend!”
“Are you unable to speak for yourself?‘ Rebecca rebuked Paige rudely.
Paige sneered. “I see now. You came to break up Alex and me today!‘
Paige’s accusation left River helpless since she knew Paige could be unstoppable when angered.
Rebecca looked displeased. “Is this how you should address me?”
“I was being polite, but you were rude to my friend first,” Paige refused to back down.
Rebecca retorted, “I’ll never agree to you marrying Alex with your attitude!”
Paige shot back, “You think you’re so superior, don’t you?”
Rebecca was seething. “What a sharp tongue! Listen, you must leave my son!”
“Do you think your son is very popular?” Paige responded. “He’s the one pursuing me, not the other way around. Don’t get it twisted.”
Azure chimed in. “How will Mr. Price pursue you if you’re willing to let him go?”
Paige glanced at Azure. “You don’t have a say here. Don’t act like you’re Alex’s wife just because of that arranged marriage. It’s annoying!”
Her words made Azure’s face stiffen. “I’m only offering a friendly reminder, Ms. Watson.”
“Keep it to yourself.” Paige pointed to the door. “I don’t want irrelevant people speaking to me. Thank you!”
Rebecca abruptly stood up. “It seems you won’t leave him. Don’t blame my son if he decides to end things.
“We don’t even know who’s breaking up with whom!” Paige continued arguing. “Tell your son not to approach me if you can!”
Azure stood up and tried to persuade Rebecca. “Let’s not engage with such a rude person, Madam Price.
Shall we go?”
“Who’s being rude here?” Paige retorted. “You both bullied my friend first. Watch your language!”
Rebecca and Azure realized they couldn’t outtalk Paige and stormed off.
Once they left, River turned to Paige. “Well, you…
Paige huffed, “What kind of people are they? Such outdated thinking!”
Her phone rang, and it was Alex.
After tapping the screen and putting it on speaker, she exclaimed, ‘Pug, tell your mother not to interfere with me again!
Alex was confused. “Huh? My mother?”
River took Paige’s phone and explained the earlier argument to Alex.
Alex said, “An arranged marriage? I had no idea about that. Calm down, Paige. I’ll go home and talk to my grandfather.”
With that, he quickly hung up.
Paige pouted dramatically. “I’m so angry! Who does she think she is, telling you to be quiet? You couldn’t speak, but that Azure could!”
River tried to calm Paige. “Let’s stay composed. You both need to figure out how to handle his mother’s objections now.”
Rivet is pathetic 😒. I think Naomi or Danielle might be working with Noah, might help him kidnap her for bonemarrow
