Paige’s face turned pale, and just listening to Kenny’s account terrified her.
Meanwhile, Neil returned.
Paige turned to Neil eagerly. “How is it? Is your blood type a match?”
Neil nodded and glanced at Noah. He remained silent but followed the nurse to the emergency room.
An hour later, River was wheeled out of the emergency room, her forehead and shoulder wrapped in bandages.
Noah momentarily held his breath when he saw River. He wanted to approach her, but his knees trembled uncontrollably.
Paige covered her mouth and wept.
The doctor looked at them and said, “She arrived just in time, but she sustained a serious head injury and is still in critical condition. We’ll place her in the ICU, and someone needs to stay with her. Her family member also donated a significant amount of blood, so someone should care for him too.”
“I’ll take care of her,” Noah volunteered.
The doctor nodded. “Come with me to complete the hospital admission procedure.”
River was taken to the ICU, with Kenny following her.
Since two people were attending to River, Paige took on the responsibility of looking after Neil.
Nell seemed alright, aside from feeling dizzy and weak.
Paige took a seat by his bedside and said, “Neil, Noah is aware of your relationship with River.”
Neil smiled bitterly. “That’s alright. He was bound to find out sooner or later.”
Paige asked, “What about the kids?”
Neil sighed. “Let River explain it to him when she wakes up. Kenny already told him, didn’t he?”
Paige nodded. “Even if Kenny didn’t. Noah would notice.”
Neil closed his eyes and asked, “Is he with River now?”
Paige confirmed, “Yes. Do you want to ask him to leave?”
“It’s fine. It’s his call. Plus, having an extra set of hands to care for River is a good thing.” Neil said.
Paige offered, “I’ll request the doctor to prescribe iron pills for you.”
Neil expressed his gratitude, “Sure. Thank you for doing that.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Meanwhile, Noah arrived at the ICU after settling the fees.
Kenny looked at him meaningfully and said, “Ill entrust River to you as I have other matters to attend to.”
Noah and Kenny stood by the window, watching River connected to the ventilator.
Noah sighed. ‘I’ll arrange for someone to handle those matters with you.”
Kenny reassured him, “We don’t need your involvement in our company affairs. Just take good care of her, or there will be consequences.
Noah looked puzzled. “What are you trying to say?”
Kenny’s voice trembled as he spoke. “River has shed countless tears because of you! She would cry secretly whenever she saw you on television during her five years in Spania! She would talk about you constantl when she was drunk!
“Just a few days ago, River came home in tears because of you! I’m begging you on behalf of those close to her. Please don’t hurt her anymore!”
With that, Kenny stormed off, leaving Noah to hide his pain behind lowered eyes.
Kenny’s words brought back memories of River crying, causing a sharp pang in Noah’s chest as he stared at her with tear–filled eyes. He was determined to make amends for all the pain he had caused her.
Later that night, Reuben rushed in with clothes for Noah, a laptop, and other items.
He glanced at River through the window and marveled, “Is Ms. Healy so seriously injured?”
Noah realized his legs were numb from standing for too long and replied, “She sustained a severe head injury and a fractured clavicle.”
Reuben sighed. “Ms. Healy hadn’t fully recovered from Mr. De Marco Sr.’s previous beating, right? And now, she has new injuries.”
Noah’s expression turned icy.
Before he could respond, two police officers emerged from the elevator.
Noah stood up, and one of the officers pulled out a notepad and pen. “You’re the victim’s family, correct?
We need your cooperation to provide a statement. We’ve also brought her personal belongings.
The male officer gestured for the female officer to retrieve the items. She handed River’s blood- stained bag to Noah. “Her ID, phone, and wallet are in here.”
Noah replied, “Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it,” said the officer. “May I ask about your relationship with the victim?”
Noah remained silent momentarily before answering, “I’m the father of her child.”
Noah believed that was the best way to introduce himself.
The police officer then asked, “Alright, what brought the victim here?”
At Bayview Villa.
Tyler and Liora anxiously watched the news on their phone. Liora’s red nose revealed she had been crying. She asked, “What should we do? How’s Mommy?”
The pale–looking Tyler replied, “I don’t know. Let me call Uncle Neil.”
Liora nodded, watching as Tyler made the call.
After a long wait, Neil’s voice came through, sounding tired and hoarse. “Ty.”
Anxious, Tyler asked, “Where are you, Uncle Neil?”
Neil had anticipated the children’s call. “I’m at Fawn County Hospital.”
Tyler inquired, “Is Mommy hurt?”
Neil replied, “Yes, she’s injured, but don’t worry. Just be patient and wait for her return.”
Liora grabbed the phone. “Uncle Nell, I want to talk to Mommy, but she’s not answering her phone.”
“Lia, your mom needs rest right now,” Neil explained.
Perplexed, Liora asked, “Is she sleeping?”
Neil reassured her, “Yes, she is. I’ll make sure she calls you as soon as she wakes up, alright?”
“Okay. Take care, Uncle Neil,” Liora said.
‘I will.”
Even after the call, the children remained unconvinced.
Suddenly, Eira called from downstairs, “Lia!”
Liora hurried out of the room, asking. “What is it, Eira?”
“Dr. Wilson is here,” Eira replied.
Liora turned to Tyler. “Papa Wilson is here! Can we ask him to take us to see Mommy?”
Tyler’s eyes brightened, “That’s a great idea!”
After a brief discussion, the two children ran to meet Scott.
Liora immediately embraced him and pleaded with puppy dog eyes, “Please promise me something, Papa Wilson!”
Feigning confusion, Scott said, “Tell me first. Lia.”
Liora frowned. “Don’t you know about Mommy’s condition, Papa Wilson?”
“I do. Do you want to see her?” Scott asked, crouching down.
Liora nodded eagerly. “Can you take Tyler and me to see her, Papa Wilson?”
Regrettably, Scott shook his head. “No.”
Tyler furrowed his brow. “Why not?”
Scott explained, “I believe River doesn’t want you to know she’s hurt because she doesn’t want you to worry.”
Liora’s spirits sank. “But I’m really worried about Mommy. She must be in pain.”
Scott reassured, “She’s very strong. Let’s wait for her to come back.”
