“Please wait a moment,” the police officer said. “We haven’t sorted things out yet.”
Noah sat down beside Alex in frustration, adjusting his tie Alex leaned on Noah: “I’m sorry for the trouble, Noah.”
Noah pushed Alex away. “Who started it?”
“They did” Alex pointed at the men with a grievance, “I accidentally bumped into them while I was drunk, and they got someone to attack me.”
“What’s the story?”
Suddenly, a man stood up and shouted at Alex, “You touched my girlfriend first!”
The police officer stood up and rebuked, “Quiet! How can you act so arrogantly after you assaulted him?”
“Officer, why didn’t you say anything about him touching my girlfriend?” the man grumbled.
Noah looked coldly at Alex. “You touched another woman?”
Alex quickly raised his hand and swore, “No, I didn’t! I just walked past her. I’m falsely accused!”
“Enough! Stop it! Did you or didn’t you touch my girlfriend?”
“Shut up!” Noah stared fiercely at the man.
The men fell silent, feeling that Noah was not someone to mess with.
A female police officer walked over and told the male officer, “It’s all cleared up. The woman says she was accidentally touched, not molested.”
Hearing that, Alex grabbed Noah’s arm. “You have to get justice for me, Noah!”
“Get lost!” Noah pushed Alex away in disgust. “Don’t annoy me!”
After obtaining the testimonies, the three men were detained for assaulting Alex.
Noah bailed Alex out, and they left together.
As they got into the car, Noah checked the time on his wristwatch.
It was now 10:30p.m.
Noah sat in silence, his expression grim.
Alex leaned against the car door, observing Noah. “Why are you so upset?”
“How can you even ask that?” Noah glared at Alex. “Why did you stay behind? Why didn’t you go back to Novamere?”
Looking down, Alex replied, “I just wanted to watch over Paige from a distance.”
Noah scoffed. “You’re hopeless!”
“You can’t judge me!” Alex retorted. “You didn’t criticize yourself when you drowned your sorrows over River back then.”
Noah’s veins bulged on his forehead at the mention of River.
Reuben chimed in. “Are you heading back to the hotel, Mr. Price?”
“Yes.” Alex found his way out. Then he glanced at Noah again, inviting trouble. “Did you inform River about Axel?”
“I swear, I’ll kick you out of the car if you say one more word.”
Reuben sighed and thought, “Why does Mr. Price always say things he shouldn’t?‘
After dropping Alex off at the hotel, Noah went to the hospital. River was asleep, so he didn’t disturb her.
The next morning. Paige and Neil arrived at the hospital to handle River’s discharge procedure. They completed it by 9 a.m.
Paige packed River’s belongings and remarked, “You didn’t bring much with you.”
River sat in a chair, lost in thought.
Neil, sitting nearby, asked, “River, what’s on your mind? You seem lost.”
River collected herself and asked, “Nothing. Are you finished packing? And where are Uncle Thomas.
and Aunt Greta?”
Neil replied, “I asked them to wait in the car. It’s too cold outside.”
He draped a newly–bought–down jacket over River and added a hat and scarf.
However, it was clear that River was preoccupied.
Paige glanced at her and suggested, “Are you waiting for Noah? Just send him a text.”
River silently sent Noah a message, informing him that she was leaving the hospital after being discharged. Despite their recent disagreements, she felt it was necessary to inform him, given his care during her hospitalization. It was a matter of basic courtesy.
Neil and Paige exchanged a knowing look.
Paige mumbled, “Noah has only been here a few days but seems to have won River’s heart again.”
Neil chuckled, saying, “If they want to reconcile, I won’t stand in their way.”
Paige reminded him, “But River is still upset.”
Neil was taken aback. “What happened?‘
Paige pursed her lips. “Who else could make River unhappy but that pretentious woman?”
Neil’s expression turned’serious. ‘So Noah is with Daniella again? If that’s the case, I need to talk to him about this. I won’t let River be treated unfairly.”
Meanwhile, Noah was preparing for a video conference at the hotel. He had a backlog of decisions to make for his company due to his absence from work.
Consequently, he didn’t immediately see River’s message. It was already 11:00a.m. when the meeting ended, and he finally noticed her message.
He frowned deeply upon reading it. ‘River isn’t accepting my explanation? Why didn’t she tell me about her hospital discharge, such an important matter?”
Noah’s expression grew cold, and he wondered whether River was avoiding him out of anger or if he was being too sentimental. ‘If she’s still angry, the text message was just a polite notification. Is she trying to distance herself? No, I won’t allow that.‘
Noah instructed Reuben, who was organizing files nearby, “Pack up. We’re returning to Novamere.”
Reuben was surprised but complied. “Yes, Mr. De Marco.”
Two days later, River returned home from Novamere Hospital. The doctor allowed her to recover at home and only come in for regular X–rays and checkups.
Only the bodyguard and Eira were present at home, as the children were at school.
Eira prepared a nutritious soup for River and served it to her. “You need to eat, River!”
River sat at the dining table, her appetite low. “I’m not hungry yet, Eira.”
“No, Neil told me to get you well as soon as possible! I have to follow his orders!” Eira insisted.
River teased, “You’re still following my brother’s orders, huh?”
Eira laughed. “Il follow yours once you’re fully recovered.” River had no choice but to eat the soup in front of her.
River noticed that she felt better after having the soup.
“River, get some sleep upstairs. A head injury shouldn’t be taken lightly,” Eira said as she cleared the table.
River nodded. “Let me know when you’re picking up the children. I’ll come with you.”
“Of course.”
River washed up in the bathroom, changed into her pajamas, and lay on the bed. Just as she closed her eyes, her phone rang.
Casp..
calling, and River seemed agitated for a moment. She picked up the call, her tone harsh.”
What do you want?”
“You’re back? Congratulations on getting discharged from the hospital,” Casey said, smiling.
River couldn’t figure out how Casey knew she was back. “Stop monitoring my every move!”
“Don’t be hostile. How about I take you out to dinner tonight?” Casey suggested.
“I can’t. I don’t have time,‘ River declined firmly.
Casey replied, “Alright, see you tomorrow night then. I hope you won’t decline my invitation. You know, I wouldn’t want to reveal that thing.”
River hung up immediately, not wanting to talk further with Casey. She worried about vomiting up Eira’s soup, which had been prepared with care.
“What else can a despicable, shameless man like him do other than threaten me? River thought.
At 4:30 p.m., Eira woke River to pick up the children.
River washed her face with difficulty before joining Eira to head out.
She noticed Scott from the window and remarked to Eira, “It looks like my driver is here.”
Eira frowned deeply. “River, are you close to him?”
River was puzzled. “Why do you ask?”
