Danika and Jade appeared normal. They treated Alfred nicely, albeit on their guard.
Alfred knew nothing of this. He kept up the conversation amicably with Jade and Danika about the company. Danika had to admit that Alfred was experienced in that department. All that he said was what Danika was thinking about. She grew to have a higher opinion of him.
If only he had no ulterior motives.
She had to check it out for herself. What if this was just a misunderstanding?
She had already made the decision in her heart. Alfred’s smiles accompanied them throughout the entire evening, blurring the lines between conspiracy and fact.
After dinner, Alfred left, and Jade sent Danika home. After giving Jade a few simple instructions, Danika said nothing more, and she got off the car.
At the door to her apartment, she saw that Eustace’s door was ajar. She was surprised.
She took the keys out to unlock her door. Just as she was debating seeing Eustace, he walked out.” Have you eaten?” he asked.
She was stunned and had to come back to her senses. “Yes. Have you?”
“Oh.” Eustace was disappointed.
Danika felt embarrassed as if she’d done-something wrong. “Haven’t you?”
“I was waiting for you.” Eustace smiled awkwardly. He thought she would be back earlier than this.
Danika thought there was something off about Eustace’s behavior. She said patiently, “Eustace, you don’t have to do this. You can focus on your own things. You don’t have to spend all your energy on me.”
It would only tire Eustace, and she couldn’t quite accept it herself.
“Do you think I’m annoying?” Eustace looked at her, his eyes full of disappointment.
It made Danika a little flustered. She explained hurriedly, “No, not at all. I just don’t want you to waste your time. Aren’t you busy?”
“I’m not wasting my time. I’m using it willingly.” Eustace smiled, looking at Danika with passion in his eyes.
That was right. He was willingly spending time on her. He’d do anything just to have one more chance from her.
He had said it very sincerely.
Danika had to admit that she was moved. She remembered all the good things he had done for her.She wouldn’t forget them just because of a few lies.
“You should eat. It’s late.”
Danika didn’t want to continue the topic.
Eustace didn’t move.He looked at Danika pitifully and said, “I thought you would be home early, so I made food for two.”
“What?” Now Danika was really surprised.
“Yeah.” Eustace nodded.
He was serious.
Danika didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.She didn’t know what to say.It was unlike him.
“Well, since you made it, I’ll have some of it.” She wasn’t hungry but didn’t want to waste his good intentions.
Besides, she couldn’t watch him starve.
She’d never forgive herself. She followed him into the house and realized the entire home had been refurbished. It was no longer pitch black like before; it was now warm and cozy.Eustace saw her looking around and said meekly, “You agreed to help me with the makeover before. But then…”
He didn’t have to finish his sentence.
They broke up, and the matter was left hanging in the air.
Eustace had no choice but to get someone else to do his interior designs.
“That’s great. It’s definitely more professional than what I could have done.” His home looked much better than before.
Eustace smiled at her words.
“As long as you like it.”
Danika was speechless.
“It’s not my home. Why would I have to like it?” she thought, but if she were to say that out loud, Eustace would surely be even more disappointed.
Quite a few dishes were laid out on the dining table, and they were all Danika’s favorites.
At once, warmth spread through her heart.
She had no idea what to do with him.She had already made up her mind to cut off all ties with him, but now, the ache in her heart was swollen.
“Sit down and try it.” Eustace was oblivious to her inner turmoil.
He was very happy.
Danika didn’t refuse. She looked at the food on the table.
“What if I hadn’t come back? What would you do?”
“Why wouldn’t you come back? Sooner or later, you would.”
“It’s just a matter of time,” Eustace thought.
Danika looked at him, unable to describe the emotions in her heart.
“Don’t you think it’s weird for you to act this way? You shouldn’t be doing all this.”
Danika thought that Eustace’s affection for her had grown to something that was making her uncomfortable.
“No.I think it’s great.”
Back then, he was stuck in the darkness, with no clear goal or motive to keep him going.
But ever since he met Danika, he found his target. He only wanted to be with her forever, so he didn’t think that his gestures were over the top.
Danika didn’t share the same sentiment.
She was worried about Eustace’s psychological health before, and now, she was even more worried about it.
It seemed harmless, but excessive dependency was a sign of mental illness.
But she dared not say anything in case she provoked him.
“Let’s eat,” she said.
She was thinking of a good chance to bring him to the psychiatrist. But how would she convince him? Danika felt exasperated because of it.
“You should eat, too,” Eustace said, placing some food before her.
“I know you’ve eaten already, but a simple tasting is fine, too.” Danika nodded.
Right now, she couldn’t do anything that could incite his anger.
Danika didn’t quite have an appetite for Eustace’s food. She wanted to speak, but she wasn’t sure how. Then, she thought of Alfred. She asked cautiously, “Your father had been gone for so many years.Do you think that there’s a possibility of him having another child? “
Alfred was not that much younger than Eustace.
Danika suspected that if he really was Mortimer’s child, that would mean that Mortimer and Max’s mother was already entangled with each other before eloping.Maybe they eloped because they found out about the child. But, of course, it was all just speculation.
Eustace’s hands paused.
He wasn’t expecting that kind of question.
“Why are you asking?”
“Nothing much.I was just wondering.”
She smiled, trying not to look suspicious.
With Eustace’s state of mind right now, she didn’t dare to let Eustace know of Alfred’s existence.
Otherwise, he’d be agitated.
Eustace was quiet for a while.
“It doesn’t matter if he does.I don’t care.It has nothing to do with me.”
