Noah replied casually, “Take your time, I’ll wait.”
“About Axel, it was my fault for not noticing his condition earlier, River said hoarsely.
Noah smiled. “It’s okay. Rest well I have to go to the construction site.”
River nodded. “Okay.”
After Noah left, River lay in bed, feeling a bit relieved after apologizing to him. She always admitted her mistakes.
That night at De Marco Residence.
Casey joined Draco for dinner but kept scratching his chest throughout the meal. Draco was concerned but didn’t reveal the truth.
Softly, Draco asked, “Casey, is your allergy medicine not working?”
Casey frowned. “It’s not working. It itches and hurts.”
Draco said, “I’ll call the doctor to give you an injection, alright?”
Casey nodded, put down his utensils, and said, “I’m not hungry, Father. I’m going to my room.” 1
Draco watched Casey leave with pity and soon called the doctor to visit.
Casey took off his shirt in the bedroom and went into the bathroom. As he looked at the spreading rashes in the mirror, the darkness in his eyes grew intense.
He clenched his fist and punched the mirror, causing his hand to bleed. However, the terrifying rashes on his chest remained unchanged.
Casey calmed himself and thought about his allergic reaction to his regular diet. After a moment, Daniella came to his mind.
“Could Daniella have given me a disease because she’s not clean? Casey thought as he dialed Daniella’s number.
At Xander Residence When Daniella received Casey’s call, she had just entered her room after dinner. She said gently, “Casey.”
Casey asked in a rather cold tone, “Have you been sick lately, Ella?”
Daniella was stunned and replied, “No, Casey. Have you?”
Worried, Daniella wondered if Casey had transmitted his illness to her.
Casey’s tone softened as he said, “It’s alright that you don’t have it. I’ll be staying at De Marco Residence for a while. We can stay in touch over the phone.”
Daniella replied, “Sure.”
After they hung up, Daniella quickly undressed to inspect her body, fearing the worst. She didn’t find anything unusual.
She thought, ‘If Casey has a disease, my life will be ruined. I can’t rely too much on anyone. I must control both Casey and Noah.‘
Daniella’s phone rang just as she was about to take a shower. It was Noah calling, and she answered eagerly.
Noah’s voice came through immediately. “Let’s terminate the contract.”
Daniella’s smile vanished. She wondered if this was related to her situation with River. She decided not to be manipulated and asked, “My actions weren’t satisfactory, were they?”
Noah said, “That’s not the reason. I need to end the contract, and I’ll compensate you for the penalty.” He hung up promptly.
Daniella’s anger distorted her expression as she thought, It’s time to take action.”
She dialed a number, and someone picked up. “You mentioned an effective herb for post–surgery leukemia. Where can I get it?” she asked.
A week later, River went to the hospital with Paige to have her sutures removed.
Paige, who was driving, complained, “Where’s Casey? He’s supposed to be at the company, but he’s been missing for days.”
River hadn’t been in touch with Casey during this time and replied, “I have no idea. Let’s not talk about him; it’s giving me a headache.”
Paige yawned and said, “Alright. Speaking of which, how are things between you and Noah now?”
River looked outside and answered, “We haven’t been in touch. He visited me when I had a fever, but i haven’t heard from him since. I think he’s busy.”
Paige said, “He went on a business trip. I thought he’d still keep in touch.”
Changing the topic, River asked, “Mardi Gras is coming up. Will your parents be traveling this year?”
Paige replied, “Yes, you must take me in.” She gave River a pitiful look.
River reassured, “Don’t worry. You’ve spent Mardi Gras with me for years.”
Paige added, “Right. It’s almost time to deal with Daniella’s situation, isn’t it? Mardi Gras is just around the comer.”
River nodded with a solemn expression. “It’s next week. Are you free in the afternoon? Come with me.”
Paige asked, “Where to?”
River had lunch with Paige after her suture removal. Then, Paige followed River’s directions for a two–hour drive to an old residential area.
Paige looked at the aging neighborhood ahead and commented, “Are you sure this is where the journalist connected to Daniella used to live? It looks like a retirement community.”
River shook her head, opened the door, and said, “Let’s go.”
Paige got out of the car and followed River to the floor where the journalist lived.
River activated the voice recording function on her phone at the door.
Paige whispered, “So, you’re recording conversations now?”
River glanced at her. I’ve learned my lesson from past experiences.”
Paige gave a thumbs up. “Good move! You’ve became wiser. Should I knock?”
“Sure.”
River knocked, and a man’s voice echoed. “Who’s there?”
Paige immediately switched to acting mode. “Hello, I’m the newly hired property management personnel. I’m here to gather your thoughts on the residential area.”
“Ah, alright. I’ll open the door.”
After the door swung open, Paige squeezed her way into the house first.
The man, Pete Parr, appeared surprised. “Couldn’t you have done that from outside?”
Paige smiled and called out, “Come in, River.”
River took two steps closer to Pete.
Pete’s expression drastically changed upon seeing her. “I don’t want to talk anymore! Just do whatever you need to do. I have other matters to attend to!”
Pete attempted to push Paige out of his house.
“What are you afraid of? We’re not here to harm you!” Paige dodged Pete’s shove.
Pete glanced warily at River and Paige. “What’s the point of seeking me out now that everything’s already public?”
River looked at him coldly. “I just want you to admit that you acted on Daniella’s orders. Furthermore, tell me everything you know about this.”
With a pained expression, Pete said, “I shouldn’t have done it and ended up in this situation!”
Upon hearing Pete’s remorse, River began inspecting his house. She could only describe it as filthy, disorganized, and impoverished.
“If you can provide us with the truth, we can ensure you live safely in Novamere like you used to,” she said.
Pete was taken aback, his eyes showing a glimmer of hope. “Really?
Paige sneered. “And if not? We’re already here!”
Pete hesitated for a moment before agreeing, “Alright!”
He invited River to sit in the living room and closed the door, He then confessed that Daniella had paid him to falsely accuse River.
River asked, “What else do you know?”
“That’s all. That’s everything we talked about,” Pete replied.
After a brief silence, River stood up and said, “Alright. I’ll assist you with a season’s rent, but you must do something for me.”
Pete was astonished. “What is it?”
On the way back, Paige remarked in surprise, “River, I’ve noticed you’re getting better at manipulating people!”
River nodded. “We’ll see if he can help me in return.”
“This is thrilling! If I were in his shoes, I’d do it for the money! Paige exclaimed.
River looked at her with frustration. “Do you think this is an easy task? It’s very risky.”
Paige was about to respond, but her phone rang. It was a call from her mother.
Paige said, “Hello, Mom.”
Her mother, Maya Bryant, said, “Paige, have you seen the doctor like I told you to? Irregular menstruation shouldn’t be ignored!”
“I did. I’ll pick up some medication soon, okay? Don’t worry!” Palge mumbled.
Maya asked, “Are you sure you don’t have a boyfriend? You mustn’t get pregnant out of wedlock!”
“Mom! What are you talking about? How could I make such a mistake? I’m busy, so I’ll hang up!” Paige Paige hung up quickly.
River gave her a stern look. “Have you gone to the hospital for a check–up, Paige?”
Paige sighed. “River, why are you nagging me like my mom? I’m fine! I don’t have any pregnancy symptoms!”
“Not every woman experiences pregnancy symptoms. Don’t ignore our advice,” River said, sounding concerned.
Paige replied, “I really am fine! My periods have always been irregular.”
“Have you seen the doctor your mom recommended? River asked.
