The two got along very well.
An outsider would have thought that Danika was still his granddaughter-in-law.
“I understand.Of course I’m not mad at you.”
Old Mr.Quincey wasn’t senile. He knew why Danika hadn’t visited the Old Mansion better than anyone else.
As they spoke, Mortimer and Eustace sat in the living room and said nothing.
They just listened to Danika and Old Mr.Quincey’s conversation.
“Grandpa, shall we go to the study to talk?”
After the pleasantries were exchanged, Danika was ready to get to the point. She came with a purpose today.
Old Mr.Quincey was slightly surprised but didn’t refuse.
“Okay.”
He stood up and looked at Eustace and Mortimer, who were sitting silently.
“You two go to the kitchen and order them to cook some dishes that Danika likes.”
He didn’t know what Danika wanted to talk about, but he could roughly guess.
He wasn’t sure if Danika would get the answers she wanted this time.
When they reached the study, he went in first, and Danika followed, closing the door behind her.
Old Mr.Quincey sat on the sofa and smiled at Danika.
“Have a seat, Danika.”
Danika didn’t stand on ceremony and proceeded to sit facing him.
“Grandpa, you can probably guess why I’m here, right?”
“Well, I do have an idea.”
Old Mr.Quincey didn’t deny it.
“Then just tell me all about it.”
Danika smiled at him, waiting for him to speak.
Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to have any intention of divulging anything.
“Tell you what, Danika? I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.”
Danika was rendered speechless and scolded inwardly, “You really know how to play dumb.”
“Grandpa, I went to Bardoff City a few days ago,” Danika said calmly, looking at him.
Old Mr.Quincey remained silent; his emotions were not exactly as calm as the expression he showed.
“I went to see Mr.Spade, and we talked about some things,”
Danika continued, keeping her gaze on Old Mr.Quincey’s face, not wanting to miss any reaction from him.
Smiling faintly, Old Mr.Quincey asked, ”I heard he was hospitalized. Is he okay?”
“Not really,” Danika replied truthfully.
“That’s unfortunate,”
Old Mr.Quincey responded, but he didn’t really seem sorry for Mr.Spade.
Danika didn’t care about that and continued, “I went to see Mr.Spade mainly to ask about my birth and origin.I’ve known for some time that there’s something strange about my background, but I had no clue until Christopher appeared. That was when I had a breakthrough.”
“Mr.Spade said that if I followed Christopher to Bardoff City, he would tell me everything, and he didn’t break his promise.I found out everything I wanted to know,” Danika said.
Old Mr.Quincey was surprised and seemed to not believe what she said.
“I’m not from Orchid Village, nor am I my grandfather’s biological granddaughter.I’m the daughter of an influential family in Bardoff City, right?”
She smiled at Old Mr.Quincey, looking like she’d already known everything.
On the other hand, Old Mr.Quincey was stunned.
“Does she really know everything? Has she found out about her true identity?” he thought in disbelief.
Everything Danika had said was just a wild guess based on the reactions of Christophers and the others.
If Christopher had fallen for her, she must not have come from an ordinary background.
Now, it seemed that she had made the correct guess.
But which family was she from? And what happened back then? “Since you already know everything, why bother asking me?”
Old Mr.Quincey sighed and turned his eyes away from Danika.
Danika felt that she got her work cut out for her.She wouldn’t be here testing the waters if she knew everything.
“Although I know everything, I still want to hear it directly from you. After all, I always thought you were genuinely kind to me.”
She looked at Old Mr.Quincey with a deep gaze.He felt unsettled being looked at like that.
At first, he’d arranged for Eustace to marry Danika with a specific purpose in mind.
Later, even he couldn’t tell whether he wanted her to be his grandson’s spouse because of her identity or truly accepted her as his granddaughter- in-law.
Now, telling her these things seemed to be meaningless.
Old Mr.Quincey sighed and didn’t doubt what Danika had said.
“Danika, since you put it that way, I won’t deny it any longer.I did arrange for Eustace to marry you because of your identity.”
Danika had an indescribable feeling in her heart, but she wasn’t too sad.
After all, this was something she’d expected.
“Is my identity that attractive to you? The Quinceys are already quite powerful in Parrington.”
Not only were they influential, but they could also even be considered one of the high society families.
Was a marriage alliance necessary for a family like that? Old Mr.Quincey chuckled and thought Danika was too naive.
“While it’s true that the Quinceys are influential in Parrington but compared to one of the Ten Elites of Bardoff Cityβthe Zellwegersβwe are still far behind.”
Danika was shocked to hear that, but she didn’t show the expression on her face.
After all, to Old Mr.Quincey, she should have known about everything.
“The Zellwegers, huh? I see,” Danika thought.
When she’d previously investigated the Ten Elites of Bardoff City, she’d looked into the Zellwegers and even suspected she might be a daughter of that family.
That was an easy assumption to make since among the Ten Elites, only one had the surname Zellweger.
However, everybody said that the parents of the Zellwegers were very loving, and they had a daughter.
In view of that, how could she possibly be the daughter of the Zellwegers? She had too many questions, but she didn’t rush to ask them all at once.
Instead, she slowly said, “Since I am the daughter of the Zellwegers, why did I grow up in Orchid Village? You should know something about that, right?”
“I’m actually not too sure,” Old Mr.Quincey answered, shaking his head.
Nevertheless, he still told Danika what he knew, “I heard that when your father and mother were together, the Zellwegers opposed it.They all thought your mother was unsuitable for their family, so when your mother was pregnant with you, she was attacked by people hired by the Zellwegers. You almost lost your chance to be born into this world.”
“What happened after that?” Danika asked, feeling that she was getting closer to the truth.
“Later, your father probably thought bringing you back to the family was dangerous, so he sent you to Orchid Village.Your grandfather was an attendant who’d been with your father since he was young, so your father entrusted you to him.He indeed lived up to your father’s expectations and raised you well.”
After listening to Old Mr.Quincey, Danika didn’t know what to say for a while.
“So, my father has known of my existence all these years?”
She’d always thought she somehow got lost from her family.
Old Mr.Quincey nodded, but he wasn’t very certain.
“I think he knows; otherwise, where do you think your mentors came from? Your grandfather was just a servant of the Zellwegers. How could he have the ability to contact so many powerful people for your sake?”
“No wonder!” Danika exclaimed internally.
At that moment, she finally understood everything.
“Since he wanted to keep me hidden, he wouldn’t let too many people know of my existence. In that case, how did you know?”
Danika looked at Old Mr.Quincey, her gaze full of scrutiny.
Old Mr.Quincey looked at her helplessly and sighed.
”You suspect too much.”
