Now, she understood.
Danika was simply Danika—unique and captivating.
Natalia thanked her again and then hurried off to see Larry without dawdling on their conversation.
After she left, Danika prepared to leave the hospital.
She was quite tired from the surgery, as working with doctors she was unfamiliar with required a lot of effort.
There was hardly any time for her to relax during the surgery.
However, just as she took a few steps, someone quickly caught up with her and called, “Danika.”
Hearing the voice, Danika instinctively turned her head and was surprised to see Derrick.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in Parrington, Derrick?”
“I just came back to Bardoff City yesterday,” he replied.
He had originally planned to take a few more days off to stay in Parrington before returning to Bardoff City so that he could get to know Danika better and make her fall in love with him.He didn’t expect she would appear in Bardoff City.
Not only did she come to the city where he lived, but she also came to the hospital where he worked.
Danika casually nodded and said, ”You go ahead and do what you need to do.I’m leaving now.”
She was tired and didn’t want to continue making small talk with Derrick, especially since she wasn’t interested in him.
Derrick, however, didn’t plan to give up.He followed her and asked, uncertainty lacing his tone, “Did you perform the surgery on Larry Cruz?”
Danika affirmed dismissively and didn’t know why Derrick was so concerned about the surgery.
Little did she know, since she’d successfully saved Larry’s life, she hadn’t only made the Cruzes immensely grateful to her, but she had also gotten everybody in Bardoff Hospital talking about her.
Everyone was curious about her.
If Derrick made it known to everybody they were acquaintances, he could imagine how envious other people would be upon seeing them walking together.
Do You Feel Better?
Danika was oblivious to what was on Derrick’s mind; she would probably be speechless if she did.
The two of them walked to the hospital entrance.
When Danika realized Derrick intended to continue following her, she became annoyed and said, “Is there anything else? I’m a bit tired and want to go back and rest. You should go back to your work too.”
She thought she’d made herself very clear.
“I don’t have anything much going on at the moment.Since we’re fellow alumni, I should treat you to a meal while you’re in Bardoff City,” Derrick said with a smile, not realizing how slimy he appeared.
Danika felt repulsed by his behavior but restrained herself from losing her temper.
“That’s not necessary. Thanks for the offer, Derrick.”
“It’s nothing, really,” he said, seemingly oblivious to her irritation.
He stood in her way, showing no intention of letting her leave.
Danika’s fists clenched, but in the end, she didn’t throw a punch at him.
“He’s a fellow university alum,” she chanted to herself inwardly. She had to hold back, or the dean would probably nag her for lashing out.
“Let’s talk about it another day,” Danika replied dismissively.
“I’m leaving now.”
Without another word, she moved past Derrick, hailed a taxi on the side of the road, and left quickly.
Watching her leave, Derrick felt a bit upset.
Let alone Parrington, plenty of women chased after him in Bardoff Hospital, and no one would treat him with such disrespect.
But then, since Danika didn’t reject him outrightly, it was possible she was still interested in him.
With that thought, Derrick felt much better.
He had always believed that he was excellent, so how could anyone not like him? Danika, who had already left, had no idea what was going on in Derrick’s head.
If she’d known, she would have wanted to crack it open and see what rubbish he stored inside.
At the hotel, Danika took a bath and lay in bed, feeling much of the tiredness dissipate from her body.
She couldn’t help but think about what she had to do next.
The Cruzes’ matter was resolved, so she needed to consider whether she should visit the Zellwegers to look for her biological father.
She wasn’t really interested in going back to the Zellwegers, but she was extremely curious about what had happened in the past and whether her mother was still alive.
If she didn’t figure those things out, she felt like she would be bothered by them for the rest of her life.
Just then, her phone rang —it was Eustace.
“Hi.Was the surgery successful?” Eustace asked on the other end of the line.
“It went well. The surgery was a success, but whether Larry Cruz will wake up or not depends on him,” Danika replied.
Eustace wasn’t surprised by that.
In his eyes, Danika was always the most capable.
“Have you gotten used to staying in Bardoff City?” he asked, not really sure what to say but not wanting to hang up the call so soon.
He wanted to hear Danika’s voice for a little longer.
“It’s okay, but the food here still doesn’t compare to Parrington,” Danika replied.
“Then come back soon, and I’ll take you to eat some good food.” Danika agreed, and the two fell into silence.
After a moment, she asked, “Have you been seeing a psychiatrist lately?”
“Yes, I have.”
Eustace nodded.
“Why are you suddenly asking?”
“Do you think it’s effective? I mean, do you feel any better?”
Danika couldn’t sense any improvement in Eustace.
Although he was very kind and gentle toward her and missed her all the time, she felt that it was abnormal.
After all, Eustace was a busy man and shouldn’t have so much time to spare for her.
Not That Petty
Danika’s words made Eustace reflect deeply on his recent condition.
Even he felt something was not quite right as he got no relief after psychotherapy.
On the contrary, the fear of losing something became even more pronounced.
Hearing what Danika said, Eustace realized that maybe the psychiatrist he was seeing was not good enough.
“Didn’t you say you know a psychiatrist?” Eustace asked.
He decided to accept Danika’s arrangement, hoping to achieve an improvement. He thought he was fine the way he was since Danika was his everything anyway.
However, if she wanted him to return to normal, there wasn’t anything bad about that either. He believed that no matter his condition, his love for Danika would not decrease by any margin.
Danika, of course, didn’t refuse Eustace’s request since he took the initiative to ask her.
Compared to the psychiatrist Eustace found himself, she trusted the one recommended by her senior more. She immediately sent the contact information to Eustace, urging him to contact the psychiatrist as soon as possible.
After sending the contact information, she comforted Eustace, worried he might overthink things.
“I have no other intentions.Don’t think too much.I’m just worried about you.”
Over the phone, Eustace heard how cautious she was with her words and smiled helplessly.
“I know.I’m not that petty.”
They chatted for a while longer.
Eustace reluctantly hung up when it was getting late.
The next morning, Danika received a call from Natalia telling her that Larry had woken up.
Danika was surprised that he had recovered so quickly.
