She thought it was probably the latter. He wouldn’t have gone to see her if Gilbert had other options.
She thought things were progressing between her and Gilbert, but she seemed to be making too much out of it.
She couldn’t fall asleep that night. However, Gilbert slept soundly next door.
Before falling asleep, he sent a message to his assistant, Greg. He ordered him to prepare clothes that fit Marigold’s measurements and specifically instructed the dress to be completely unique.
Once Greg received the message, he got out of bed in the middle of the night to look for the dress. However, it was hard to find a unique dress.
They would have to get it custom-made, but it was too late now.
There were other options, which was buying from luxurious and exclusive brands, especially those that made only one item per design. However, that would be pricey.
Greg didn’t know how close Gilbert and Marigold were, so he couldn’t be sure if Gilbert would be willing to spend that much money on Marigold’s dress. Hence, he curated a few selections for Gilbert to choose from tomorrow.
In Eustace’s villa, Danika was not asleep when Eustace came home. She was calling someone on the phone.
“I don’t care how long ago it was. You must get it checked. I will not allow anyone to tarnish my grandfather’s name after his death.” After that, Danika hung up. She was obviously in a bad mood.
Eustace went to her side and pulled her into his arms. “Are you still looking into Gilbert’s identity?”
“Yes. I believe in my grandfather’s innocence. Something must have happened.” She wanted to investigate it thoroughly. This was the only way that her grandfather wouldn’t become a scapegoat.
Eustace knew how much she cared for her grandfather, even though they weren’t related by blood. He massaged her forehead. ‘Til help you check it out. There will be results.”
“Okay.” Danika leaned against his shoulder. Once she cleared it up, she would tell it all to Esther and let her know that her grandfather was not like what Esther had thought.
Besides, it involved Gilbert. She wanted to know what had happened.
Gilbert and Marigold (39)
Greg placed all the selected designs and details before him in his office early in the morning.
‘These are the dresses I have prepared, Mr. Hawthorn. However, I’m not sure which one Miss Wagner would like,’ Greg said. In truth, he thought they were all very pretty, and they were all dresses that he would never be able to afford in his lifetime. Even looking at them would make him drool.
Gilbert went through them and spent half his day deciding. In the end, he couldn’t decide because he didn’t know which one Marigold liked. Finally, he sent the pictures to Marigold so she could choose from them.
Very quickly, he received her message. Surprisingly, she’d picked a black one.
“Get this.” Although Gilbert thought the red one looked better, he supported Marigold’s decision and chose the black one.
The assistant took the documents, hesitating. “Mr. Hawthorn, this dress is from one of the most luxurious brands. It’s very expensive.”
He wasn’t being nosy. This dress was just not for casual buying. He had to be sure. If Gilbert wasn’t taking Marigold seriously, such an expensive dress wouldn’t seem worth it.
Gilbert didn’t know what he was thinking. He was dissatisfied to hear that.” What’s wrong? Is the company going bankrupt? Can’t you take even this amount out?”
‘No, sir!” Greg shook his head quickly, understanding Gilbert’s intentions. He turned, afraid that he would further invoke Gilbert’s wrath staying there.
However, just as he reached the door, Gilbert said, “In the future, give her only the best when it comes to whatever she wants.”
Gilbert had never asked about these things and had only left it to Greg to handle. Perhaps he hadn’t been clear enough, resulting in Greg’s negligence.
Greg was stunned, and he hurriedly agreed.
So, it seemed that his president had taken a liking to Marigold. When that happened, that meant he was about to fall for her.
Greg would have to be more polite to Marigold in the future. She might end up being the president’s wife.
In the afternoon, Marigold received the clothes that Greg personally delivered.
“Sorry for the trouble,’ Marigold said as she took the dress. She was a little embarrassed that he had to come all this way.
He shook his head and said, “It was no trouble at all. Mr. Hawthorn hired stylists for you. Shall I let them in now?”
Marigold was stunned. She couldn’t understand what Gilbert was thinking.” I can’t believe he even thought of those.”
“Of course he did. He fancies you now,” Greg said, currying her favor.
Unfortunately, Marigold felt nothing. Gilbert just didn’t want her to embarrass herself at the party, which was why he was so well-prepared. She didn’t think she had to thank him.
She was going to be eye candy. And obviously, Gilbert was going to pay for all the sugary treats. It wasn’t like she was going to prepare them herself.
“What’s the matter, Miss Wagner?” Greg felt a chill running up his spine. He thought Marigold wasn’t looking too good. She didn’t seem moved.
Marigold snapped out of her trance and went back to normal. “I’m fine. Let them in.”
Styling would take a long time; if they started now, it would be in time for the party.
“Alright.” Greg nodded. Although he thought something was amiss, he didn’t pry. He was just an employee. He didn’t dare to inquire too much.
Gilbert and Marigold (40)
At six in the evening, Gilbert’s car arrived at the entrance of the villa. When he went in, the stylists had just let Marigold change into the dress. They were making their final adjustments.
Gilbert looked at the woman in black standing in the middle of the living room, his eyes wavering. Although he refused to admit it, he was moved.
‘ Mr. Hawthorn.” Someone saw him and greeted him. Everyone else looked his way, including Marigold.
The corners of Marigold’s lips curved. “How do I look?”
“Great.” Gilbert had to admit that she was beautiful.
Marigold was surprised to hear his compliment. She thought he would simply refuse to answer.
The stylists kept on fussing around with her hair. Gilbert went behind her. From the mirror, he could see Marigold clearly. There was a youthful vigor to her beauty that made people want to fawn over her.
His gaze trailed downward and stopped at her bare neck. “Her neck is too bare.”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Hawthorn. We have prepared a necklace,” a stylist hurriedly answered. She took out the limited edition jewelry.
It was a three-carat diamond necklace. On its own, it was striking. But it didn’t stand out when it was on Marigold’s neck.
Gilbert wasn’t too satisfied with that and texted Greg.
“She’s ready, Mr. Hawthorn.” The stylist stepped aside so that Gilbert could see Marigold clearly.
Their gazes met. They were feeling a myriad of emotions. For a moment, all was quiet. Then, to ease the awkwardness, Gilbert said, “Just wait another minute.”
“For what?” Marigold looked bewildered, not understanding what he meant.
Gilbert said nothing, merely making her wait.
But quickly, Marigold understood what he meant when Greg arrived. He was holding a box, and he put it on the table. “This is what you requested, Mr. Hawthorn.”
God knew how hard he had worked. With Gilbert’s one message, he ran all the way to the shops to buy what he wanted. Most importantly, that shop insisted that this was their most prized possession and refused to sell it. In the end, he had to pay them more than what it cost to get it.
It was already expensive, to begin with, and now it was priceless. On the way there, the assistant thought about taking it and running, living the life that he wanted. However, he didn’t have the guts to do it.
“Put it on her.” Gilbert looked at the stylists. They were about to go toward her, but then Gilbert said, “Oh, never mind. You may all go back.”
The stylists looked at each other in bewilderment but didn’t ask any questions. They packed up their things and left the villa. After they left, Gilbert took the box and told Marigold to sit with him.
“What is it?” Marigold was puzzled. She leaned over to look. When she saw the dazzling necklace in the box, it took her a long time to recover. The diamonds on the necklace were at least ten carats. It couldn’t even be described as priceless.
While Marigold was in a daze, Gilbert had already taken the necklace off her neck and put the new one on. Once he had put it on, he checked her out before nodding in satisfaction. “Beautiful.”
“This…this is too expensive.” She was about to take it off. Even when she was with the Wagners, she had never worn something so expensive.

Before she managed to touch the necklace, Gilbert grabbed her hand and said, “Just leave it on. It looks very good on you/ ‘But…’
“Since you’re going to be my date for the party, just do as I say, alright?” Gilbert looked at her, and his tone was unusually gentle.
Marigold regained her senses. She thought he made sense after giving it a thought. It was probably because Gilbert didn’t want her to embarrass him at the party that he chose such a huge diamond necklace. At the thought of that, it seemed like this logic made sense.
She no longer had the intention to take it off anymore. She wanted to shake Gilbert’s hand off but realized she could not succeed. “I’m not going to take it down. Let go of me.’
Upon hearing that, Gilbert let go of her hand with slight embarrassment. After a brief moment of awkwardness, he said, “Let’s go. It’s almost time for us to leave.”
“Alright.” Marigold’s cheeks were flushed. She nodded and followed Gilbert. Her dress was a little long, so she could only walk out of the villa slowly while holding up her dress.
Seeing her walking like that, Gilbert immediately carried her in his arms.
“Ah! What are you doing?’ Marigold was shocked. She didn’t expect Gilbert would do that at all.
At the same time, Gilbert had already carried Marigold to the car, opened the front passenger door, and placed her on the seat. “This will save us time.”
With her cheeks flushed, Marigold wanted to say something. In the end, however, she still didn’t manage to say it. Gilbert was right. She could not waste his time.
Soon, Gilbert started the car and drove to the venue of the party. Both of them said nothing in the car. It was a little awkward.
Fortunately, the venue was not too far away, so they arrived very soon.
Gilbert got out of the car first and then made his way to the front passenger seat to open the door for Marigold. He extended his hand and helped Marigold out of the car.
Marigold was wearing a black gown. To match her, Gilbert also wore black. Both of them looked stunning when they arrived at the venue, and all eyes were on them.
