“If you and Lottie find each other compatible, we will confirm the wedding,” Esther said.
Gilbert was about to say he was in no rush, but Esther then said, “The company happens to have a vice president position available for the taking. It would be good for you after your engagement.”
In other words, she would only let him be the vice president if he was engaged. He could forget about everything else if he wasn’t engaged.
Gilbert definitely did not want to be engaged to Lottie. He contacted her only to get rid of Esther’s suspicions about him. But things were moving too slowly. He had to get close to their core.
The engagement seemed inevitable.
No matter. It was only an engagement.
Once he was the vice president, he would have the authority to interfere with most of the operations. Once that happened, it would be the end for the Bradshaws.
Esther knew nothing of his schemes. When she saw that he still had yet to respond, her face turned sour. “You don’t want to? Are you still thinking about that woman?”
“No. I just think things are moving too quickly,” Gilbert said expressionlessly.
Esther looked at him in suspicion. “Really? It’s still alright. Back then, your father and I married after just a few days of knowing each other. We were much faster than you are.”
“Whatever you say,” Gilbert said. He didn’t want to raise Esther’s suspicions over this.
He had to endure it.
He was very close to victory. He wouldn’t want to give up now.
Esther smiled at once. “Very well. I will contact the Silveras and get the engagement confirmed.”
“Alright.” Gilbert nodded nonchalantly.
Gilbert and Marigold (62)
At night, Gilbert drove to his villa. He got out of the car and went straight to his room. Then, he took out his phone and called Danika.
When Danika called him earlier, Esther was right in front of him. He did not pick up for fear of arousing her suspicions, which was why he had waited to come home before calling her back.
She picked up quickly. Gilbert learned that Marigold already knew about everything, and instantly, he felt a headache coming.
‘Alright. I’m coming right now. Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her leave the house.” Gilbert knew that it was dangerous for Marigold to be alone right now. Esther had not given up on targeting her. It was only because she was in Danika’s house that the woman had no chance to strike.
After the call, Gilbert went downstairs. But before he got to the door, he paused in his footsteps. If Esther was suspicious of him, she would undoubtedly have someone spying on him. If he went to Danika’s place, it would further increase her doubt.
It was no easy feat coming this far. He was about to become the vice president of Bradshaw Operations. He wasn’t going to give it all up.
But he couldn’t leave Marigold hanging.
He turned and went back to his room. He turned off all the lights in the villa and looked out from the balcony of the second floor.
As expected, he saw a car parked outside the villa. It hadn’t left since he’d come home. He was almost certain that this was a spy that Esther had sent out to watch him.
Thankfully, the spy was only at the front door. Gilbert could leave through the back door. However, he couldn’t drive. Thus, he had to get someone else to pick him up.
In the end, he called Eustace. As of now, only Danika and Eustace knew of his plan. If Danika were to keep an eye on Marigold, Eustace would be the only one available to drive him.
As for Zack, Gilbert had yet to tell him about what had happened with the Bradshaws. On the one hand, he didn’t want Zack to worry, and on the other hand, he didn’t want Zack to be involved.
Gilbert was already waiting when Eustace’s car quietly drove up to the backdoor. He got in the car quickly, and they sped off.
Gilbert looked at Eustace a little awkwardly. “Sorry for the trouble.”
‘It’s no trouble at all.’ Eustace didn’t mind. He and Danika were married. If Gilbert was Danika’s brother, he was his, too. On top of that, he wanted Gilbert to get together with Marigold, too. He missed Danika.
They arrived quickly at Eustace’s villa. Because of Gilbert’s arrival, Eustace and Danika finally had time to themselves. He took Danika away from the villa, leaving Gilbert and Marigold alone.
Marigold sat on the sofa in the living room. She knew Gilbert had walked in, but she refused to look at him. She was obviously still angry.
Gilbert was exasperated, but he sat next to Marigold. ‘So you know everything.”
“Of course. How long were you planning on lying to me?” Marigold was upset when she spoke about it. She looked at Gilbert, eyes flashing with anger.
Gilbert did not mean to make any excuses for himself. “I’m sorry for lying to you.”
Marigold was stunned to hear him admit it. Was that all? Wasn’t he going to explain himself?
While in a daze, Gilbert continued, “I know you’re really angry right now, but I don’t have any other choice. If I don’t destroy the Bradshaws, it won’t just be me in danger. You and Caleb will be in danger, too. That’s why I have to do this.”
Gilbert and Marigold (63)
When Marigold heard that Gilbert was not just thinking for himself but also for her and their child, for some reason, she stopped being angry. She looked at him, unable to imagine how hard it had been on him.
She sighed and said, “Even so, you should have just told me everything. Did you think I’d blame you?” She didn’t like being lied to.
‘I was worried that you’d overthink things,” Gilbert answered.
Marigold looked at him, her lips curling upward. “Overthink about what? Why would I do that? We don’t seem to have anything going on between us. 鈻?/p>
Sure, they had their romantic moments, but neither of them had really cut through the fog between them. In other words, they were nothing to each other at all. Regardless of whether Gilbert wanted to or not, Marigold had no right to demand an explanation from him.
“Just give me some more time, Marigold. Wait for me to settle the Bradshaws.” It wasn’t that Gilbert didn’t want to take their relationship to the next level. It was that he didn’t dare to.
Every day that the Bradshaws were not pacified, the sword aimed at his neck drew closer. If anything were to happen in the event of him and Marigold getting together, no one would be able to bear the consequences.
They just had to hold on.
At least until he settled everything.
Marigold understood what he meant, but she wasn’t sure of it. “Does that mean you’ll confess to me after you’ve dealt with the Bradshaws?”
It was a little straightforward, but she no longer wanted to play charades with him. A little proactiveness would make everyone’s lives easier. At least, her life would be.
“Yes.” Gilbert did not deny it. That was exactly what he was thinking.
He’d admitted to it.
Marigold didn’t think that this was real.
She thought that he would simply refuse to answer the question and was fully prepared for him to just divert the topic. Never in her dreams would she think that this day would come. Her heart beat harder.
Perhaps because of her overwhelming joy, she forgot what to say.
Seeing how quiet she was, Gilbert hurriedly said, “Well, I can wait if you’re not willing to.”
He knew he had wronged her in the past, and she would naturally be upset with him. Now, he was willing to be the assertive one.
“I am! Oh, I am!” Marigold nodded quickly. In fact, she wanted Gilbert to confess right now. She’d waited for so long for this moment to arrive. How could she refuse?
Gilbert smiled. He didn’t seem surprised by it. He knew that Marigold liked him. Throughout all their little interactions with each other, he knew that she had never held any grudges against him, even if he were the one who didn’t want the child.
Marigold was smiling from the bottom of her heart. “Why?”
“What?” Gilbert didn’t get it.
“Why do you like me all of a sudden? I remember you saying that you had no feelings for me.” Although Gilbert had fallen for her, and it was a joyful moment for her, she hadn’t completely lost her rationality.
If one needed a reason to hate, one would need a reason to love, too.
Gilbert’s feelings for her were just a little out of the blue.
He smiled. “I wouldn’t know, either. Maybe it’s because we’ve spent a long time together, and you’re different from what I thought. You’re a very likable person.”
That was probably what people meant when they said feelings would develop overtime.
Marigold was surprised, too. When Danika suggested living with Gilbert so that their feelings for each other could develop, Marigold didn’t believe it. She thought that it would never happen with Gilbert.
But it seemed that Danika knew Gilbert better than she did.
Gilbert and Marigold (64)
When Danika and Eustace returned to the villa, Marigold and Gilbert were done talking. On top of that, they seemed cozier with each other.
Danika knew that Gilbert had successfully convinced Marigold.
“Gilbert,” she said, walking in and interrupting them.
Marigold blushed at once. Gilbert was embarrassed, too. “I’m going to have to trouble you to take care of them for a while longer.”
‘ Don’t worry, Gilbert. Nothing will happen to them as long as I’m around.” No one dared to stir trouble on her turf.
So what if the Bradshaws were capable? Could they withstand the force of the Ten Elites if they joined forces?
Danika could get quite a few of the Ten Elites to team up. The Bradshaws were no match for them.
Gilbert knew it was safest for Marigold and Caleb to be with Danika. Hence, he didn’t dawdle. “I’d better head back. Someone is spying on my villa. I’m afraid of something happening.”
Although he thought it was unlikely, it was better to be on his guard.
“Alright. Get Eustace to send you back,” Danika said.
Eustace and Gilbert had no objections to that. They soon left the villa quickly.
