Once they left, Danika went to Marigold’s side. ‘ Did he clear things up with you? Are you still angry?”
“I’m definitely still mad, but I can understand him now,” Marigold said with a smile.
“As long as you understand. Gilbert has no other choice. Although Eustace and
I can help him, you know what he’s like. He doesn’t want my help.” just with the Zellwegers and the Quinceys, they would be able to defeat the Bradshaws. However, the Zellwegers and the Quinceys would be affected.
Gilbert didn’t want them to help precisely because of that.
“I know, and I’ll support him. I believe he can do it,” Marigold said.
It was just going to be some fake news. Maybe Gilbert would approach other women, but nothing didn’t think she had to be furious. After all, if no engagements were made, no weddings would happen.
Marigold would never dream that news of Gilbert’s wedding had already spread throughout the city.
In Eustace’s car, they needed about twenty minutes to reach Gilbert’s villa. It was rather quiet in the car. They weren’t very used to it.
“How are things with Danika?” Gilbert said. Although he didn’t like Eustace, he’d found nothing wrong with him after his wedding. Thus, he had to convince himself to let go of his bias.
Eustace replied, “Pretty good.”
“When are you planning to have children?” Gilbert asked.
Eustace was not amused. “If you can’t think of anything to say, you can choose to be quiet.”
Gilbert was speechless. Alright. He and Eustace didn’t have much to talk about, anyway. They were not the talkative type.
The car drove on. Once Gilbert was quiet, Eustace asked, “Esther won’t trust you this easily.”
“I know.” Gilbert nodded. “She wants me to be engaged to Lottie. After that, she’ll let me be the vice president of Bradshaw operations.”
“And did you agree to that?” Eustace glanced at the person in the passenger seat.
“I did.”
Eustace rolled his eyes, exasperation written all over his face. “And have you told Marigold?”
“No,” Gilbert replied.

Eustace didn’t know what else to say to Gilbert. He knew that Marigold would not be okay with it, so why didn’t he just tell her everything? Was he going to keep on lying to her until she found out about things herself again?
Would she be so easily comforted the next time it happened?
‘I think you should give her a heads up so she’ll be more prepared.” If he did, Marigold would know about Gilbert’s scheme, and while she would still feel uncomfortable, she wouldn’t be too angry about it.
But if he didn’t and kept on lying to her, all the comforting he had done today wouldn’t matter. Marigold would still feel cheated, and he would have a much harder time appeasing her.
Gilbert understood what Eustace was saying. However, he’d finally convinced Marigold that he was doing all this for her and the little one. How could she accept it if he told her that he was going to get engaged to someone else?
“I haven’t thought about how to break it to her.” Gilbert looked tired, which was rare, in front of Eustace. If he could, he wanted to ignore everything related to the Bradshaws. But he just couldn’t.
Eustace had no idea what to do, but he insisted on his stance. “Being honest is still the best thing to do.’
‘I’ll think about it,” Gilbert said.
Eustace didn’t say anything else after that. After all, it was none of his business. He could only offer his opinion about the matter. It was still up to Gilbert to figure out the rest. But then, it looked like he didn’t want to.
He could only hope that Gilbert would have no regrets in the end.
Soon, the car arrived at the backdoor of Gilbert’s villa. After getting out of the car, Gilbert thanked him and went into his house through the backdoor, disappearing from Eustace’s sight.
Eustace didn’t dawdle. He left quickly.
He did not return to Danika’s villa. Like before, he returned to his other house and called her once he got there. He told her about Gilbert’s engagement, how Marigold was sure to suffer if she found out about it, and how she had to prepare herself.
Danika was surprised, too. She thought that Esther would be placated easily. She wasn’t expecting that Gilbert would have to be engaged. Who could accept that?
Because of this, Danika was awake the entire night. She was worried about Gilbert and Marigold’s relationship.
The next day, Marigold was shocked when she saw Danika. “What’s up? Didn’t you sleep?”
“No.” Danika didn’t dare to look Marigold in the eye.
“What happened?” Marigold was bewildered. Logically speaking, Danika should have slept soundly after she and Gilbert had cleared things up.
Gilbert obviously had his reasons for not telling Marigold about it. Danika didn’t want to speak on his behalf. “It’s nothing. There’s a patient in critical condition over at the hospital, and I was thinking about how to cure him.”
“Isn’t this too much for you? You have to work and keep me and Caleb company.” Marigold was embarrassed. Danika had been accompanying them ever since Marigold came to stay with her.
Danika waved her hands. “It’s fine. I just wanted to rest. I didn’t have the chance to before.’
“Why don’t you just go to the hospital? I’ll take care of Caleb.” Then, Marigold added, “I won’t go outdoors. I won’t run into trouble.”
She knew that Danika was staying there because she was worried about what the Bradshaws might do to her and her child

In a crucial situation like this, Danika didn’t want to leave Marigold and the child alone. “It’s okay. I’ll stay here to be with you two. The hospital will be fine.”
Marigold wanted to say more, but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to change Danika’s decision. She could only thank her.
Danika was worried that Marigold would overthink at home, so she decided to take her shopping. She was a woman, after all. They could shop her frustrations away.
Marigold didn’t object to it. She was thinking of bringing Caleb out for a spin.
The driver brought them to the mall. A bodyguard and a nanny kept close to them. Since Caleb didn’t need to be personally attended to by them, it was a relatively relaxing shopping experience.
“Let’s get some clothes for Caleb,” Danika said.
Marigold didn’t refuse. She wanted to buy some things for Caleb to eat and play with, so she went into the baby section with Danika.
They bought a load of stuff for the child. Danika saw that Marigold wanted to keep going, so she took her out of the baby section and brought her to the women’s luxury brands.
‘ Moms can love their children, but they can’t just love their kids. They need to buy some things for themselves, too.” She took Marigold into one of the boutiques.
It was then that Danika understood that it was a very, very bad decision.
Gilbert and Lottie were shopping in the exact same store. Thus, when they went in, they bumped into each other.
The atmosphere grew tense for quite a few moments. Then, Danika pulled Marigold further into the store, not intending to turn back. If they did, it would mean that they had lost.
“This suits you, Marigold.” Danika had picked out a red dress for Marigold. It was loud, but surprisingly, it suited Marigold well. She was pale and had the perfect hair to match. With the red dress, her extraordinary beauty was further showcased.
Marigold, however, kept on refusing. When she saw Gilbert and Lottie in there, she lost all of her drive to shop. She just wanted to turn and leave.
Even though she knew that Gilbert was accompanying Lottie for a reason and didn’t even like her, she still felt upset.
‘ Bert, I think that’s your sister,” Lottie said as she put her arm through Gilbert’s and walked towards them.
Bert?
Marigold’s heart ached. Were they that close already?
Now, even if Danika wanted to ignore them, she couldn’t. She had no choice but to face Gilbert and Lottie. “Yes, Miss Silvera. That’s my brother. But ever since he returned to the Bradshaws, I haven’t been keeping in touch with him,” Danika said.
This was what they had previously discussed. Danika naturally wouldn’t agree to Gilbert returning to the Bradshaws, so they decided to pretend that they had lost contact with each other. Only then would Esther be convinced that Gilbert truly wanted to return.
Lottie seemed to be hearing about this for the first time. She was shocked. “Why? What’s wrong with Bert choosing to go back to his parents? As his sister, you should be supporting him instead.”
“This is between Gilbert and I. You don’t have to worry about that.” Danika didn’t want to keep talking to her. She was just a pawn in their game. Danika didn’t have to waste her breath.
But Lottie wouldn’t let it go. When she saw that Danika was about to leave, she pulled her back. “I think that there must be a misunderstanding between you two. Since you’ve met today, let’s have a meal together to clear the air. What do you think, Bert?”
Gilbert and Marigold (67)
Danika wanted to laugh when Lottie called Gilbert “Bert.* She had no idea how Gilbert was keeping it together.
She said nothing, looking at Gilbert.
Gilbert’s gaze was gentle. He looked at Lottie as if she were his lover. “I’m fine with anything. You can decide.”
“Let’s have a meal together. Miss Zellweger.” Lottie invited Danika after getting permission from Gilbert.
Danika hadn’t wanted to agree because she was afraid of spoiling Gilbert’s plans. But she could feel that Lottie was glancing at Marigold from time to time and sensed that she was challenging her. Danika smirked. ‘Alright. But I’ll have to bring a plus one.”
“That’s perfectly fine.” Lottie didn’t ask if it would be Marigold. To her, Marigold didn’t seem worth mentioning. But was that really true? If it were, Lottie wouldn’t be looking at Marigold.
She obviously wanted to know what Gilbert and Marigold’s relationship was like, and her invitation was just to show off in front of Marigold.
Lottie and Gilbert walked out of the boutique. Gilbert had not glanced at Marigold once. She knew that he was just acting, but she still felt miserable.
When they walked out, Danika finally looked at Marigold. “Let’s go. Someone’s treating us.”
“I’m not going, Danika. I’ll take Caleb home. You can go.” Marigold truly didn’t want to see Gilbert and Lottie being affectionate to each other.
But Danika did not agree to that. She pulled at her. “Marigold, if you go now, it means that you’re afraid, and you’ll lose the battle. Ignore my brother’s behavior. Right now, you can’t lose to Lottie. Do you understand?”
