‘Did you worry about me?’ Jeremy asked, tilting his head.
“You saved my life and are like a patient to me right now. It’s only natural that I worry about your health as your doctor.” Alyssa refused to answer his question directly.
“So you are.” Jeremy beamed at her. “I don’t mind being beaten up. I got to see just how much you cared about me, after all.”
Alyssa scowled, rolling her eyes. Jeremy should really get his brain checked.
Meanwhile, Landon was driving Lauren to the hospital at the fastest speed possible. He never once let her go from his arms, even after arriving.
When had a powerful, feared man such as Landon ever been so worried and anxious over a woman?
Angelina followed briskly behind him, a faint smile appearing on her face.
Lauren really was an angel to have blessed her boss with tenderness and love.
“Mr. H-Harper, none of our elite doctors are present tonight. If you want to send her to the emergency ward, we can find someone for you ASAP!” The nurse cried, shivering with fear after recognizing Landon
“If you don’t send me your hospital’s best doctor within the next ten minutes, I’m demolishing this place from the ground up!” Landon roared. “Well? What are you waiting for?”
The nurse quickly ran off to find the doctor. Most of the other staff and patients also stayed out of his way.
“Does it still hurt, Laurie?” Landon asked softly, the sweat on his skin soaking through Lauren’s clothes.
Lauren winced lightly, tears still falling down her face. The sight only made Landon’s anger burn more furiously.
“Mr. Harper, Ms. Lauren’s hearing might be affected right now by Betty’s slap. I’m sure she can’t hear you quite well,” Angelina suggested.
The desire to rip Betty apart limb by limb rose in Landon’s chest. “If something happens to Lauren’s hearing, I’m cutting that bitch’s eyes out and shoving it down her throat!”
Spikes of pain and anxiety cut into Landon’s heart as he watched Lauren tremble. He leaned down to kiss her forehead, praying for it to go away.
Ten minutes later, Landon brought Lauren to the ENT department. The doctor quickly did a series of checkups on Lauren while Landon and Angeline waited anxiously to the side.
“Will she be okay, doctor?” Landon finally asked.
“Some external trauma appears to have caused her eardrum to rupture,” the doctor replied truthfully.
Most of the cases I encounter result from severe slaps or punches. Some serious cases end up with long-
term tinnitus.”
Landon and Angelica’s expressions fell as they feared for Lauren’s health.
“Is full recovery possible, doctor?” Angelica asked worriedly, as if she was Lauren’s sister.
“Yes. The perforation isn’t too big, and you sent her here without a moment’s delay, so it seems full recovery should….”
“Should?” Landon gritted out.
“It will! Full recovery will occur! All that’s needed is surgery and proper care afterward.” The doctor quickly corrected himself, frightened by Landon’s threatening glare.
“That had better be the case.” Landon held Lauren in his arms protectively, warning the doctor, “Or this will be the last case you ever take on in your life.”
The ENT doctor nodded frantically.
Landon gently stroked Lauren’s back to calm her down, murmuring close to her right ear, “Don’t be afraid.
I’m here. I’ll make sure you’re okay.”
Angelica blushed just the slightest upon seeing this.
“I heard something about surgery, Landon?” Lauren whispered. She was shivering with fear as shel hugged Landon’s waist.
Landon’s tone softened. “Yes. Just a tiny one. It won’t hurt.”
“But I don’t want to have surgery! I don’t want to stay in the hospital! I don’t want to!” Lauren cried, shaking her head.
Landon swallowed tensely, her movements causing a warm sensation to pool down south.
Landon cursed himself. This was not the time for him to dwell on those thoughts!
“Don’t be scared. It really is just a minor surgery. I’ll be there with you from start to end-until you recover fully,” Landon promised.
“I still don’t want to… I’d rather become deaf than stay here!” Lauren whined through her sobs.
Angelica suddenly noticed that Lauren seemed to have a strange aversion toward the hospital, as if it triggered some deep, painful trauma of hers.
‘Are you sure, Laurie? Are you sure you want to become a deaf person? You won’t be able to hear my voice anymore,” Landon responded.
Lauren pursed her lips but said nothing.
Landon slowly knelt before her, holding her hands and saying, “Can you do this surgery, please? For my sake? If not, your brother’s going to skin me alive. Please, Laurie?”
Sure enough, his pleas worked.
Lauren rubbed her eyes, which were swollen from tears and nodded.
Alyssa had just finished tending to Jeremy’s wound when Ben walked in. “How are you doing, Mr. Jeremy?”
“Very we!!, thanks to Alyssa.” Jeremy shot her a fond look as he spoke.
Alyssa instinctively looked away.
Jeremy used to be so stoic. What was with all this passion and emotion now?
“You have our sincere thanks, Ms. Alyssa. Ben bowed, but Alyssa quickly helped him up.
“You don’t need to do this, Ben. It was my duty, after all.”
Ben wasn’t one to be nosy, but he still wanted to see Jeremy be together with Alyssa again. “You’re still as kind to Mr. Jeremy as always.
“Please don’t misunderstand. I’m only doing this because Jeremy is important to Grandpa.” Alyssa smiled lightly. “I do what I do only for Grandpa’s sake.
Ben met her smile. Jeremy, on the other hand, grinned warmly at her. He was used to her indignance by now. He just had to read her body language or pay attention to what she said. One of them was bound to tell him the truth.
“Mr. Jeremy, if you’re able to walk, please head to the study. Mr. Newton would like to speak to you.”
Jeremy nodded, “Alright.”
He turned and said gently to Alyssa, “Wait for me here. I’ll be right back.”
“Like hell! I’m leaving. Goodbye!” Alyssa snorted and marched out of the room.
Jeremy wanted to reach out to stop her but didn’t in the end. He watched as she left, leaving only him and
Ben in the room.
Ben could see just how tender and emotional Jeremy’s gaze was as he watched Alyssa leave.
Jeremy chuckled, shaking his head “Don’t you think I’m pathetic, Ben?”
Since he was young, he’d treated Ben as a family, so there was no need to hide anything from the older man.
“Of course not, Mr. Jeremy. Ben shook his head. “I’d like to congratulate you, actually, for finally realizing-
what your heart really wants.
“Now that both you and Ms. Alyssa are unattached, you have a chance with her. I pray you can learn to
Please, don’t disappoint her again.”
Ben then looked at Jeremy, who felt like there was a lump in his throat. He had to hold back a tear from falling down his cheek.
“Do you think… I still have a chance, Ben?”
All of a sudden, Ben was reminded of an image of Alyssa being sent to the ER, blood soaking both her legs as she lay weakly in the hospital bed, begging him to keep that night a secret from Jeremy.
