Betty. “So, Betty hurt Lauren?”
Landon nearly ground his teeth into dust. The cigarette in his hand almost broke in two under his furioust pinching. “If I did something to Betty, would you retaliate on behalf of your family, Jeremy?”
Jeremy lit his cigarette and took a long puff. “I’ll pretend you never said that to me.”
His stance was clear as day.
“Thanks, man.” Landon grinned, delighted. He patted Jeremy’s shoulder in solidarity.
“But no deaths, for your own good.” Jeremy shot him a look.
Jeremy continued, “If you really like Lauren and intend to build a future with her, then first make sure to cut off all those women you keep on strings around you-secondly, no more killing. You’re a Harper, not some underworld warlord. I wouldn’t feel safe entrusting Lauren with you otherwise.”
“I only think of Lauren as a sister, Jeremy. Nothing more,” Landon hurriedly said, though his heart betrayed
So did his wavering gaze and slightly trembling fingers, which Jeremy was privy to.
The latter only responded lightly, “Ignore the feud between Sophia and I. Lauren may be her daughter, but I’ve never held a grudge against her for that. She’s a good girl. I truly hope she finds happiness.”
“Jeremy… I… Landon choked out hoarsely.
“You may not be the best option for Lauren, but I can tell you’re serious and genuine about her.”
Jeez, what was with this attitude? Why did Landon feel like he was getting schooled by his future father-in
-law?
“Are you lighting that or not?” Jeremy asked, reaching out for the cigarette in Landon’s hand. “Give it back if you’re not. It’s my last one.”
“I am, I am… “Landon quickly tucked it between his lips. “Say, when did you get so stingy? You’re worth billions, yet here you are fussing over a cigarette? No wonder you’ve only ever made one friend-me.”
“I’m trying to quit. I only go through half a pack daily now.”
“Why? You’re only 30 years old. At this rate, you might as well go vegan.”
“Because of Lyse.” Warmth and joy flooded Jeremy’s heart as he thought of her. “She hates it when I smoke. It’s hard to quit, but I’m trying my best.”
“Tsk. Why didn’t you cut Liana out of your life when Alyssa was still married to you then? You know how much she hated that bitch,” Landon teased.
“I know I messed up. You don’t need to remind me.” Jeremy snubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. “But there’s no going back for me anymore. I want Lyse. No one else in this life but her.”
Lauren slept until the evening hours. When she woke up, Landon had prepared her dinner.
you being serious when you said you wanted to go home with me, Laurie?” Landon asked, half-
“Were teasing.
Lauren bit her lip and nodded, then shook her head. She wrapped her arms around her knees, toes wiggling lightly on the bed. 1
The sight made Landon’s breathing quicken slightly.
“I-I want to live with Grandpa, but I need to wait till I’m better… so he doesn’t worry.” Lauren’s eyes were moist with tears.
“I understand.” Landon gently caressed her hair.
With a sly grin, he asked, “Do you trust me that much, Laurie? Do you know who I truly am? Do you have any idea how badly the world thinks of me? Aren’t you worried you’ll find yourself in danger if you come with me, hm?”
Lauren slowly met his gaze. “I don’t care what everyone else thinks. I know you’re a good person, just like my brother.”
Landon’s heart pounded, warmth surging through his being. He gently stroked her hair, hand cupping her nape.
Seeing his silence, Lauren asked worriedly, “Would I be troubling you, Landon? Do you not… want to take me home with you?”
How innocent and direct her words were. Lauren had no idea what she was saying in an adult setting.
Landon murmured but suddenly tensed up, eyes widening in shock.
Lauren had wrapped her arms around his neck, leaning so close to him that all he could see was her. She then pressed her lips against his own.
Landon’s heart leaped into his throat as he grew rigid with shock.
Lauren closed her eyes lightly and recalled their first kiss. She gently pressed her tongue against his lips,
Electric fire surged through Landon’s veins. He swiftly pulled away, panting heavily as he gazed sharply at her. “What are you doing, Lauren?”
“I… I…” Lauren stuttered, asking innocently, “I thought you liked that, Landon? I want to make it up to you.
“Make it up… to me?” Landon could barely think straight at this point.
“I’m not going to just take advantage of your kindness. I thought you liked stuff like that? I can learn to be better at it.”
Landon swallowed harshly, blood boiling in his veins. “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is for you.
to be saying that right now?”
“Dangerous?” Lauren asked, meeting his dark gaze.
Landon couldn’t shake the thought that Lauren might be the cause of his downfall.
He slowly leaned in and kissed her again. Lauren shivered as Landon wrapped his arms around her waist, slowly pressing her onto the soft bed.
Alyssa left the hospital without so much as a word to Jeremy. Though he’d left her with an incomplete puzzle, she wasn’t going to grovel for the entire thing.
She’d rather figure it out herself than ask. It was high time she stepped back into her spotlight after what she’d endured for three years.
On the way back to the villa, Sean called her.
“Ms. Alyssa, we were unable to find any information on Jeremy directly, but we did find some interesting things pertaining to Justin Walsh.”
“Being Walsh Group’s CEO, it only makes sense that anything personally related to him is entirely off the records. You’re getting smarter, Sean.” Alyssa grinned.
Sean savored the praise and continued, “Justin Walsh was a victim of a kidnap when he was 11 years.
old.”
“Kidnap?”
“Yes. But there is virtually no news about this incident on the World Wide Web, not even in the newspapers. The Walsh family must have silenced all potential leaks on this incident.
“If it weren’t for the police’s records, we’d never have found out about this. If you’d really more about it, miss, you can always ask my father.
to to know
“He was Solana City’s Supreme Court judge, after all. He must’ve heard something about it.”
“No need, Sean, You’ve already done exceedingly well. You can drop the matter for now.” Alyssa then hung up the call, sinking into thought.
Sean was on bad terms with most of his family right now, so he couldn’t be asking them for help on their behalf for the time being.
Thankfully, Alyssa had some leads now.
She had just reached home when she noticed a man standing outside the gate.
Alyssa narrowed her eyes to see who it was. Her heart dropped upon realizing it was Jeremy.
Jeremy gazed at her through her windshield, a fond smile on his face.
Alyssa pursed her lips, a bitter wave rising in her chest.
She had to admit Jeremy looked extremely fine when he smiled, just like how she used to dream of him.
She had foolishly stayed by his side for three years, giving him things she thought he might appreciate, learning how to cook, all just so he would smile at her for once.
All of it was futile, however.
Yet, here he was now, smiling at her, even admitting he had feelings for her.
