“All items are made by the humans?”
“And Ryleigh and Galen,” Mom answered.
It went back and forth like that for a while, Derik asking questions, Mom answering them.
The twins woke in that time, and I played with them on a blankie on the ground.
Derik came over to sit with me, holding Enzi’s little hand as she tried to suckle on his finger.
“And finally, what are you planning on doing with the land?” Derik asked.
Mom smiled at that question. “Making it a home, Alpha Derik. My family, the humans have been at the mercy of a madman for a long time, and our village has suffered for it. I want to banish those memories by starting fresh. I don’t want separate women and men villages. I don’t want the widows cast out. I want to do things differently. To bring the community together instead of separating it. The humans have voted on this too. But to move buildings and change them, it would require permission. I would like to take that out of the equation,” she explained.
I was so fucking proud of her. Without my father involved, she had flourished. It was beautiful.
Derik nodded, smiling down at the twins before looking at Mom and Galen. “I’m voting yes for this idea. I agree with the plan and the offer, but I have to take it to the council. You’ll have our vote and Galen’s. The others, I will convince. Would you be able to stay for the night so I can meet with them and give you an answer by morning?” Derik asked.
“Yes, of course. Ryleigh and Vaughn are leading the village in our stead,” she said.
“Once you have your government structure, education, and trading systems in place, inform us. Please,” he added.
“We will,” Mom said, then smiled at me. I grinned back and handed her Zale. She cooed at him, glowing as Galen stared at her. I turned to Derik, who was rocking Enzi, playing with her, tickling her as she smiled up at him.
It was a perfect moment.
One that could only be destroyed by Beenie bursting into the room, Cain hot on her heels. Her face was drenched in dread.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, standing quickly.
“I saw something.” Beenie shivered.
“Been, we don’t know–“
Beenie shushed Cain. “They need to know what I saw,” she snapped, then turned to us. “I don’t know if it was a nightmare or a premonition. But I do know it felt as real as this moment. It was the vampires. All of them. Coming over the wall, storming through the city. They were attacking everyone and everything,” she panted, wincing as if it caused her pain to remember and say.
“What does that mean?” I whispered, dread trickling into my blood too.
“It means they’re coming. The vampires and the war,” Beenie answered stoically.
I sucked in a breath, knowing it was coming in theory, but reality had just slapped me in the face, and I was reeling. I looked back at my family, the reason I fought, the people I was too scared to lose.
“That wasn’t all I saw, Lorelai,” Beenie said, her voice low in warning.
I turned to her, not sure I could handle whatever else she had in that head of hers.
“What else?”
She looked me dead in the eye, her eyes glassy before her gaze dipped to my stomach. “You were pregnant in the vision. I saw the fight from your unborn child’s mind.”
36. The Alphas
LORELAI
The twins had gone to sleep over an hour ago, and I should have too. I was exhausted.
But I couldn’t get what Beenie had said out of my mind.
The vampires were coming; that was inevitable. But the pregnancy thing? That was nerve-racking.
I snuggled into Derik’s side while he played with a strand of my hair. Kai was curled into my back, and Brax was between my legs, like normal. Except it didn’t feel normal. It felt like there was an elephant in the room that none of us wanted to bring up first.
I sure as hell didn’t.
Another baby? We already had two that we could barely keep safe. It hadn’t been long enough, surely. But I was a wolf, and had been for a while now, maybe not full but partially. Maybe that meant I should’ve been using protection before now?
It was too late anyway. Beenie had said the vampires were coming soon, in the next few days. She knew because the wolves in the infirmary were still getting better in her vision. That meant the unborn child she saw was currently nestled deep inside me.
My hand went to my stomach, and I chewed my lip, staring at the wall on the other side of the room. Derik let out a sigh, and Kai held me tighter. Brax pressed a kiss to my thigh, and I swallowed.
I loved them. They loved me. But I was young, and having another child seemed terrifying. The twins were a constant worry, a constant weakness for our enemies to exploit.
“They’re also a reason to fight, beautiful. Maybe that is why we have been given this gift,” Derik murmured.
I smiled against him, closing my eyes. He always seemed to have that optimism tucked away for me, coming out when I needed it most.
“I can still shift. Is that normal? Would it hurt the baby?” I asked softly.
Kai shook his head against me. “Not this early. Later, it will be impossible. Your body will tell you when you need to stop. You’ll age while you’re pregnant and not shifting too. And the first shift afterward will ache,” he explained, not hiding anything from me.
He was good at that, telling me exactly what I needed to know without sugar-coating anything. I needed that. He kissed my spine, then my neck.
“I’m scared,” I whispered after a while.
Brax sat up, looking at me as I despaired. “We’d be worried if you weren’t, Spitfire.”
“So you’re all scared too?”
Brax nodded. They all did.
“You think the idea of losing you or the twins weighs nothing in our minds?” Brax raised a brow.
I shook my head. “No. But now that I’m carrying, I can’t go into this with the same mindset. Before, I was willing to do whatever it took to keep you and the twins safe, whether I made it out or not. Now, I can’t bargain with my own mortality in exchange for the ones I love.”
My alphas went silent, their anger palpable. It steamed the room, and I grimaced, hiding my face in Derik’s chest.
“I don’t mean I was going to,” I said, then looked at them, sitting up properly. “I just mean that I didn’t mean as much to myself as the rest of you did. But now, I have to protect myself too.”
Kai scoffed. “Then welcome to the family, Pup.”
Kai grinned and kissed my stomach. I rolled my eyes but accepted Kai’s head in my lap, brushing through his tangles of hair with my fingers, straightening them out.
“When the vampires come, we’ll be ready, and we won’t let them take any of us, understood?” Derik said firmly.
I nodded, leaning my head on his shoulder. “How can we be ready enough?” I sighed.
“We can do everything to keep our pack safe. Your border around the top of the wall will help. The weapons from your mother will help; they’ll go pick up the supplies tomorrow. The wolves are training tonight, patrolling within the city. Our scouts are retreating to the city.” Derik listed off the things we were doing to prepare, but there was a sinking feeling inside me that it just wasn’t going to be that easy. The vampires wouldn’t attack unless they believed they could win this time.
Maybe they could.
I closed my eyes, my fingers still going through Kai’s hair, my head still on Derik’s shoulder when Brax’s lips pressed softly to mine.
My eyes opened slightly in surprise. Then they fluttered closed again, my body responding to his mouth on mine. I kissed him back, my tongue sliding along his, my thighs widening so he could move into me.
His knee pressed against my pussy, and I sighed into the kiss, trying and failing not to grind myself against him. He pressed harder, the friction on my clit sending heat searing through my doubt.
I knew what he was doing. He was distracting me from overthinking, from spiraling. It was working.
I leaned into his kiss as Derik’s hand moved up my shirt, cupping my breast before tugging at the nipple through my nightgown. I moaned as it lit my core on fire, the heat making my breaths harsh against Brax’s mouth.
Kai’s face nuzzled into my neck then, his lips licking over my neck a second before his bite was on me. I cried out, gripping Brax’s arms as he held my face. His lips never left mine, teasing my body with promise.
Kai and Derik did the same, caressing the skin they found wherever they found it while Brax explored my mouth.
It was intoxicating the way they could make me feel so many things at once.
Separately, they were addictive and gave me pleasure that made my body hum. But together? It was an explosion.
I grinded against Brax’s leg again, needing more friction there. He got the hint and dipped his finger between us, ruffling my nightgown up to reach my wet center. His thumb pressed against my clit before he circled it.
I gasped, my fingernails biting into his skin as I bucked. The overwhelming pleasure took me over, made me move so I could have more of my Alphas. If this was going to be one of our last nights without a vampire to kill, then I was going to make the most of it.
I broke from the hold my Alphas had on me, pushing Brax back. He went to his back easily, grinning up at me. His eyes were full of heat, his lips swollen from my kisses. It made me desperate for him.
I ripped off my nightgown and moved his legs apart. He never wore clothes, so it was easy access to his rigid cock. It was throbbing with thick veins and a leaking tip. I licked my lips, gripping the base.
