I wanted to be pissed but the smile on her face was hard to take away.
And she was safe. Derik’s heir was safe.
It was an outcome I could live with, despite wanting the win. It still thrummed in my blood and if I wasn’t mated, heads would roll.
Luckily for everyone else, she was my grounding and tamed me like no other. So instead of having a tantrum like I was definitely capable of doing, I pulled her in for another searing kiss.
She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and kissed me back as inappropriately as I kissed her so all thoughts of winning ceased to exist.
5. The Swim
BRAX
The best part about the games used to be the swim. Now, it was watching my mate strip down to her underwear.
Kai was glaring at anyone who stared too long, but I didn’t blame them. She was as hot as hell and made to bring men to their knees. She brought me to mine.
Being on my knees for her was something I looked forward to. Then all I had to do was lean forward and find her sweet center.
She smirked over at me, sitting on the grass next to the lake, her legs out, baking in the sun.
I grinned, wiggling my tongue at her so she knew exactly where my mind was.
“Come here and get on your knees then,” she said in our link.
“Give me a second to win this swim and I will.” I walked over, my clothes stripped down to my dark boxer briefs.
She eyed me up and down, licking her lips.
“Hmm. I’m not a very patient mate, I’ve decided,” she smirked, closing her eyes as her chest rose and fell a little bit faster.
She was going to get me hard in front of everyone if she kept playing her games like she was.
I should’ve cared more about that fact than I did.
Derik and Kai came over, both in their briefs.
Lorelai peered at us all, a greedy grin lighting up her face.
“Damn, I’m lucky,” she breathed, taking us all in.
“As are we,” Derik smiled, kissing the top of her head before eyeing the lake behind us where the spectators had gathered. More humans and wolves had moved their blankets and watch spots to surround the lake.
It was shimmering with a deep blue that glinted in the sunlight. I loved it when the sun hit the water like it was. It made me feel warm and more connected to the depths.
I eyed it, excited that I was going to be in it. Most of my pack participated in this event, already lining up to take part.
They knew they wouldn’t win against me, and they knew they wouldn’t win since they hadn’t been in the other parts of the games, but they wanted in the water just like me.
And we weren’t that structured when it came to the games this year. Derik was letting people participate in whatever event they wanted, whether they were human or wolf.
It was fucking awesome.
“You coming, Spitfire? The swim is about to start,” I said, nodding to the edge of the lake.
She eyed it and a flicker of fear took over the heat in her eyes. She shook her head.
“I’m going to sit this one out,” she admitted.
I wondered for a split second whether this was another ploy but ditched that thought when my shadows reached out to hers and soothed her.
Derik knelt down and kissed her cheek. “Enjoy the sun, Beautiful,” he said then went to line up with the others.
I sighed and looked at the lake. “Are you sure?” I checked.
She nodded with a tight smile. “Me and the water don’t have the relationship you two do yet,” she grimaced and she was right.
After the portal sent us into shadowed water that tried to kill her and then the lake had been poisoned, I could understand where she was coming from.
“You’ll be safe?” she asked me, eyeing the water warily.
I grinned and nodded. “I’ll be safe, Spitfire. See you soon,” I smirked then went over to the line.
I watched her as Derik announced the start of the swim. Kai was bending down to her, whispering in her ear as she grinned.
Then she looked at him with wide eyes and nodded.
“I’m bringing her in on my back. We’re not racing but she’ll be there”, he said then took her hand in his and pulled her toward the starting line.
The horn blew and I dove in.
The water felt amazing on my skin, instantly calming everything inside me.
It was like meditation but better.
I cleared my mind and started swimming. I was fast, surpassing everyone who had started the race ahead of me.
I didn’t have to try, the power in my body, my connection to the water easing me through it with barely any effort. I got to the end with time to spare, winning the race. I smirked as everyone clapped, then looked over at my Spitfire.
She was grinning, her body draped over the back of Kai’s.
He was moving slow, coming in last by a lot as the other swimmers started crossing the finish line.
But I didn’t care what place they came in, only that my mate wasn’t worried about the water anymore. I wanted her to love it like I did. As much as she could anyway.
So I swam back over to her and Kai.
She had her arms around his neck, holding him. It made me jealous, like maybe I should have let Kai take the win and taken Lorelai instead.
I loved having her over my body and I bet her tits felt fucking good against Kai’s naked back.
“They do,” Kai said in the mate link so we could all hear. I smirked and swam up to them.
“Congrats, Brax,” Spitfire said.
“Somehow I feel like Kai got this win.”
She blushed and put her face in his neck.
Kai rubbed it in. “Oh if only you knew where her feet were right now.”
I grinned, wading in the water, floating, relaxing at their pace as he moved with our mate on his back.
“I can always take over if the water is getting to you?” I offered, trying my luck.
Kai laughed. “No fucking way, I’m fine,” he said.
“You don’t like the water either?” Lorelai asked Kai.
He shrugged. “I don’t mind it. But I’m from the grasslands too. I’m used to land and prefer it,” he said.
She looked like she understood that which was fair but I needed her to understand what the water could do for her mind. And her shadows.
I smiled and reached mine out to her.
She eyed me and gave me her shadows, both of ours entwining over the water. She grinned as mine caressed her, tugging at hers to go below the water.
She hesitated.
“Trust me?” I asked.
She nodded, still watching the water lapping at our shadows. Nobody else could see them but I wanted it that way.
“Then come here Spitfire and let me show you what the water is to me,” I said.
