“Well, I was thinking that maybe we could see the twins together. Now you know how good I’m feeling and that I am obviously much better. I think it’s time,” I suggested.
He frowned, his brow instantly furrowed in a deep V.
“That’s not a good idea,” he said, extracting himself from me.
I didn’t understand. “How is it not a good idea? They need their mother, Mordechai,” I insisted.
He stood up, doing up his pants before turning to me with a somber look on his face. “Pearl. Listen,” he started, sinking down to sit on the bed again. He grabbed my hands and my heart pinched.
“What is it?” I demanded, tears already stinging in my eyes. He knew something.
Something was wrong. I knew it.
“The twins. They were very underweight. They–“
“I need to see them.” I didn’t let him finish. I didn’t want to hear it.
“I don’t want you seeing them so sick, love. They are fighting hard, but they may not make it. So I need you to rest and then when they are better and you are, you will be strong enough to see them,” he said and my heart broke.
My babies were suffering and I wasn’t with them. I wasn’t there for them.
My suffering was nothing in comparison to how scared they must be. If they were miserable, it was even more of a reason for me to get to them.
“Mordechai, please, I need them. Even if they are sick,” I begged.
He turned away from me, thinking that he shielded me from the eye roll he gave, but I saw it and the alarm bells went off in my head.
He was frustrated with me. But that made no sense.
The door opened then and Camilla came in. “Sorry to interrupt, I have Pearl’s tea ready. Should I deliver it now?” she asked, blushing as she looked at our hands entwined.
She wouldn’t meet my eyes.
That was unusual.
Something more was going on and I was determined to find out what it was.
“Yes, please.” Mordechai got off the bed and grabbed his coat then scarf. Camilla handed me my tea, looking at my husband with a look I recognized. It was a permissive glance.
Not to say they had slept together but he was definitely instructing her and she was eager to please him.
That did not bode well for me.
I eyed my tea and she smiled widely.
“Drink. It’ll make you feel better.”
“Mhmm,” I said, taking a timid sip, pretending to swallow. When I did, both of them smiled like I was a child taking medicine. Which is why, as soon as they left the room together, I spat the tea out and tipped it out the window.
I would wait until nightfall and then I would find my children. Sick or not.
4. The Twins
GALEN
Winter had to be the season I lost control. The alphas had instructed me to walk it off, locking me out of the city until I regained control. I didn’t mind. I enjoyed solitude.
Control was something I cherished, and I had to admit I had momentarily lost it.
The thought of unmated females assuming I was available for meaningless sex had pushed me past my carefully built barriers against my savage side. I roamed the forest in my wolf form. The alphas had asked me to keep an eye on the humans, but only if I was in control again. I was, but I preferred the solitude of winter away from the pack.
The pack lost their sanity to the cold, to the inability to shift. It was chaos and it irritated me.
The alphas were even more lustful than the previous ones. Nikolai was the worst.
His libido was off the charts and I found myself disconnecting from the tainted link more often than not.
Being out in the snow, with only the forest for company, was peaceful.
I discovered more plants to bring back to the city for my garden.
They helped me maintain control.
And their properties gave me more to experiment with.
I walked over a slight incline, the soft snow falling from the trees my large wolf form brushed against.
My senses tingled as I crossed the hill.
I wasn’t alone.
My fur bristled and I scanned the forest, on high alert.
Then I felt something stroke my coat. I couldn’t see what it was, but it was oddly calming.
I grunted and moved forward, growling a warning to whatever it was.
Then I heard it. A small giggle in response.
My eyes darted around the forest, searching for the source.
The giggling continued, the sensation of being petted preventing me from growling again.
I didn’t like not being in control and this was testing my grip on it, but something kept me from getting as angry as I usually would.
I climbed another rise, my eyes landing on two bundles, curled up under a tree near the lake.
What on earth?
I sniffed the air then put my nose to the ground, sniffing again. My eyes widened.
Winterborns.
My blood turned to ice in my veins, my heart pounding.
Children born in winter. The cursed. And there were two of them.
They were a threat. It was my duty to eliminate them. The alphas would want to know about this.
I was torn. Should I leave and inform them? Or should I handle it myself?
The previous alphas would have expected me to handle it, but the new ones were changing many of the old rules. I liked the direction they were taking, but it left a lot of gray area.
I moved closer, sniffing until I reached the winterborns.
As soon as I sniffed over one of their bodies, the baby giggled, smiling up at me, her small hands grabbing my face, then my fur. Her eyes were light and I felt my coat being petted again.
Her shadows. She had them.
But she didn’t look evil. Nor did she look like she wanted to conquer the world like the last idiot who tried it.
Her wide eyes were a navy color, her cheeks flushed pink. I looked at her brother who was only watching. He looked more cautious, his eyes watching me near his sister.
And there was no doubt about it, they were twins. So similar and yet easy to differentiate.
I shifted back to human, put my pants on and knelt down to the girl who laughed.
Reaching for my finger, she sucked on it greedily, gnawing at it like it would provide nourishment.
“How long have you been out here?” I whispered.
Of course, they didn’t answer.
So I looked for clues myself.
