“How much blood do you need?” Brax asked, frowning.
“Not much, and only for whoever is sent to protection detail. It will make our senses sharper, our strength stronger,”
he said.
“How will it work?” Mom asked.
“I’ll send four vampires with you. You will let them each feed once, not much, a few drops each, not enough to weaken your humans. Then when it is time to switch shifts, I will send four more and they will swap. The four that leave can take the volunteer blood for the young with them, would that be agreeable?” He asked.
We all looked at each other before I turned to Lucien, “Would a few drops be enough to help you beat them?”
He thought for a minute then nodded, “It will help.”
“Then yes, we have a deal,” I said.
Lucien grimaced and held his head.
“One moment,” he huffed.
I frowned and we all tensed, waiting.
“This better not be a trap,” Brax warned, his shadows already leaking.
Lucien shook his head quickly, “I assure you, it is not. But my vampires do have a request in return for our help,” he sighed.
“We’re not going to like this, are we?” I grimaced.
He shook his head, “I expect not. But the mothers of my vampires can be quite persistent in our hive when their children are concerned,” he admitted. And he did look sorry.
“You need our blood,” I assumed.
Galen and Brax growled from deep in their chests.
“Yes, I’m afraid letting you go without it is not going to go well for either of us.”

The heat of the blast washed over me, but my magic was ready, exploding just as hard around us.
The fire and debris bounced off my magic shield that was reinforced by Brax’s shadows. They had closed us in too.
We both had our hands up, protecting us.
I smiled at him, our connection deep in those few moments, surrounded by the loud whoosh of the flames over the protective dome we had created.
Galen had Pearl curled into him even though they were protected.
But the fact that they even needed protecting pissed me off.
The explosion faded, the warmth of the flames going with it. I lowered my magic as Brax lowered his shadows.
The carriage was gone. Obliterated. Charred pieces of debris and small fires on leftover pieces of velvet booth littered the ground.
“They really love their explosions, don’t they?” I huffed, looking around again to see if they were watching their handiwork. I couldn’t sense them but I knew they were there.
They were loving the havoc they were wreaking.
“Looks like we’re running,” Brax said, gripping his shirt at the back of his shoulder blades and tugging it off.
It was not the time to be staring at my mate but I couldn’t help it.
He was mouth-watering to look at. His lean body on display, the ripple of abs. I licked my lips and Brax grinned at me.
“Not right now, Spitfire, but I promise, once we are safe, I’m all yours,” he pulled me in for a kiss.
I would have kept going, but my mom cleared her throat.
I blushed and smiled at Brax, who kissed the tip of my nose.
Then he moved back and shifted into his wolf. I climbed up onto his back as Mom got on Galen’s.
The link was still foggy, but I could sense them there. I was pretty sure we could push through to each other if we had to, but only because we were so close.
So instead of saying it in our heads, I spoke aloud.
“I’m going to have my magic at our backs just in case,” I said. Brax nodded, and I clutched the nape of his white fur.
It was so soft that I rubbed my fingers through it a few times before holding it. He made a growl, almost like a purr, and I grinned.
I knew what that growl meant. It meant Brax enjoyed my hands on him, something I already knew.
I kissed the top of his giant head, then Galen took off and Brax followed.
The wolves ran fast, my hair whipping back behind me as I bent low to catch as little of the wind as possible.
I kept an eye on the forest, hoping I would see any danger before it hit us, but if our track record with the rogues was anything to go on, then that wasn’t likely.
It made my stomach turn the way we couldn’t see them until they wanted us to, and usually it was too late by then.
It was terrifying, nerve-wracking, and I was trying to keep my shit together, but it was hard to do.
Especially when my children and my mates were in a city that I wasn’t, vulnerable to whatever attack the rogues decided to put on them.
So were we.
But I was doing as much as I could, so I just had to keep pushing and hope I had enough favor with the realm to win.
‘They’re following you,’ A whisper said in my head, and I tensed.
Those whispers. I recognized them.
I had heard them before the last battle. And they helped.
I looked over my shoulder as we ran through the forest, avoiding trees and roots easily.
My magic flared out behind us, but it wasn’t tingling, it felt nothing yet.
But I had a feeling the whispers were right.
‘How far?’ I thought back at them, not even sure if they could hear me if I didn’t say the words aloud.
Nothing whispered back so I repeated myself out loud, ignoring Brax who grunted in question beneath me.
‘You will make it to the territory but you must hurry,’ the voice whispered.
“Faster,” I urged Brax beneath me.
He didn’t question it, running harder, grunting at Galen to do the same.
Moving their powerful bodies, they ran faster.
But the rogues were fast too.
In another blink, the rogues were on us, running alongside us in their wolf forms.
They had riders holding belts across their chests that came with all kinds of bottles in them.
Each bottle had a new color of liquid in it. Silver, purple, blue, red.
It was intimidating as hell and I urged Brax again.
But we were running fast already and I wasn’t sure how much more Brax had in him.
