“Brax!” I called, and he swerved closer to Galen. I clutched him tight, my magic border closing in around us as Brax’s shadows supported my border with one of its own.
“Can you use your shadows like that while shifted?” I asked Brax, remembering the bloody nose he had gotten before.
It took a lot of strength, and so did shifting. I wasn’t sure if he should be using both kinds of energy at the same time.
He lessened his shadows as my answer.
I petted him, running his white fur through my fingers. He kept running.
A blast of magic hit mine, and I sucked in a breath.
It burned slightly, my skin tingling, my power shuddering.
Whatever they had was strong.
Brax whined, his shadows moving to check over me. I rolled mine with his and hardened my magic, pouring more strength into it.
“I’m okay, just get us to the vampires,” I said, holding strong as my magic was assaulted again and again.
Smashes of glass vials against my magic shield became constant, with different colors and feelings rebounding off it.
Orange was a burn. Red was an ache, a bloodish taste in my mouth. Blue made my lungs tighten. Green gave me the mother of all headaches.
But it was dulled by the magic so I could handle it.
Kind of.
My power was weakening. The more they threw at me, the more I felt like I was stretching myself.
I kept my Alphas in my head, images of them, our children, our life together. It helped and kept me strong against their attacks.
I breathed hard as another blue vial hit my shield and it wavered. I leaned down on Brax’s fur and closed my eyes, concentrating on feeding my magic as much strength as I could.
I teetered the line of passing out and grimaced as my magic continued to get attacked.
I used my mom’s presence and Galen’s. I thought of everyone I held close and used the images of them in my head to keep my strength holding.
“Hurry,” I whispered to Brax.
He urged himself faster and I caressed his shadows with mine. I knew he was tapped out too, running so fast for so long making it hard to keep going with more speed but he did it.
I smiled and my shadows poured out, searching for the other wolves.
They knew how to make this more even.
My shadows connected with Brax’s and moved through my magic, yanking the rogues off their wolves.
It was a small thing but it made all the difference. It meant we had more of a chance.
But the rogues were fast to get back, like they had been expecting it.
The ones I yanked off, threw their belts of vials to the wolves that were running, looping it around their necks with a well-aimed throw. The wolves ripped vials out of the belt with their teeth and launched them at the magic shield I had up.
It was just as potent on my body.
I winced as they hit harder, the expenditure on my energy becoming worse.
Another hit from all of the wolves at one time had my entire shield shaking, threatening to collapse. I tensed, my heart racing, my head throbbing.
I didn’t dare close my eyes.
I pulled my shadows back in as the rogues I had pulled off the wolves shifted into their own wolves and started running after us too.
They had us surrounded, they had us weak and I was sure we were going to have to fight. Until one of the rogue wolves roared so loud my ear ached.
It was attacked, rolling on the ground until it stopped and a vamp with blood dripping down her chin looked up and grinned.
She nodded with a smile then turned to the forest.
A second later, the rogues were on the defense, vampires blurring out of the forest, taking them down so fast. Brax slowed, and so did Galen.
The vampires threw the belts with the leftover vials at the female vampire who looked deadly. And hot.
She was wearing a full dress, structured with a corset and ruffles on her skirts and sleeves. Her dress was blood red with black lace over it and her lips were red. Her eyes too.
She walked over to us, catching the belts as she moved and her vampires took down the rest of the rogues until three of them escaped, running off with howls into the night.
I climbed off Brax, stumbling into him. He caught me, nudging me upright with his muzzle, licking over my face then sniffing my stomach.
“I’m okay,” I whispered, petting him.
My mom came over then and smiled, “Evelyn, thank you,” she said.
Evelyn wiped the blood from her chin and licked her finger, “Any chance to take down some rogues. Weak, disloyal creatures,” she spat.
Her eyes were lined with charcoal, her dark lashes long and thick, brushing her tan skin.
She was beautiful. Her long black hair was straight down her back and her features seemed familiar.
“Lorelai, this is Evelyn, Lucien’s sister,” Mom introduced. The familiarity clicked.
“Oh, nice to meet you,” I said with a smile, looking at the destruction her vamps had caused.
Five men came up behind her and she nodded to them.
“These are my warriors. Trained and loyal to me. We protect the vampire territory borderline. You’ll be safe here,” she nodded her head to me.
“Thank you,” I said quickly, looking over her warriors.
They were refined, like all the vampires were, but had a wild quality to them that made me think they were more dangerous than they looked.
That might be the werewolf flesh on their torsos or the blood still dripping from their fangs though.
“You can call me Eve if you want. Unless my brother is in the room, then he will insist on my full birth name.
Traditionalist that one. But he leads well and I will follow him until my dying breath–“
One of her warriors hissed. The one with white hair, shaggy white waves of hair, half of it covering his narrowed red eyes.
She smiled softly at him then turned back to us, “Excuse Oli, he’s a little sensitive when it comes to my demise despite the immortal part of our genetics,” she said playfully, eyeing him again.
He bared his teeth, “Immortal. Not invincible,” he said gruffly, his fists clenched.
Evelyn gave a high chuckle that was almost melodic.
“Calm, warrior. The threat is gone,” she said, then turned to us. “Head straight through the forest, it’ll get darker but you’ll see the castle across the marshlands. Follow the path, don’t stray or the bats will think you a meal,” she smiled sweetly, then spun to her warriors, leading them away.
She looked over her shoulder. “Give Lucien my regards,” she said, then ran to the dead wolves and knelt, closing their eyes and whispering the realm words of death.
“We should put their head on spikes to ward off the others who dare to think our territory is for their traitorous kind,”
Oli said with a gruff laugh.
“Yes, I am sure the humans won’t be concerned with that at all when they freely offer their blood,” another one who had the same features as Oli said. This one had straight white hair and rolled his pale red eyes.
Evelyn nodded to the bodies. “Ezra is right, we must dispose of the bodies. If the rogues choose to spend their last moments in our territory, I say we let them. Then give them a true vampire welcome,” Evelyn grinned, and her warriors grinned, helping her carry the wolves from the border.
I shook my head and looked at Mom, who smiled warily. “We should visit with Lucien,” she said.
I nodded, and we walked beside our wolves through the dark forest that grew darker by the step.
“Why would she need us to give her regards to Lucien? I thought it was a hive mind?” I asked.
“Lucien said she isn’t a part of the hive mind. Only vamp who has ever been able to break from it. But he has assured me she is as loyal as they come and will not stray,” she explained.
