I knew afterwards I was going to need time to recover but at least the water would be protected and that was the main thing. The entire realm used it, not just us, we needed it protected.
At all costs.
‘ Not all costs, Spitfire, ‘ Brax interrupted in my mind. I knew at least one of them would say it if they were listening in and I tried to agree but I wasn’t sure I did.
My life for the whole realm? If I wasn’t carrying, it seemed like a no-brainer.
But I was carrying and that made me hesitate.
The buzzing in my body grew sharper and I winced. It got stronger as the lake grew shinier.
The texture started to turn, becoming less jelly and more sluggish.
But it was still sparkling.
I cleared my sore throat and kept chanting, the words tiring on my tongue.
I needed this to be over.
But the rogues kept coming and they finally achieved what they had been hoping for.
They broke through the barrier.
I gasped as I looked over, the words pausing on my tongue, an arrow sailing through the air.
But Derik caught it before it reached me, snapping it in half over his knee and throwing it to the side.
“I’ve got your back, Beautiful, keep going,” he urged.
I took a minute to check on the pack who were still fighting with everything they had. Kai, Brax, and Derik were catching arrows, tussling with rogues who got too close, protecting Cain and I.
They were tiring though, I felt it in the link and as the words left my mouth yet again, I wished I could ask Cain how long it was going to take.
We were not a never-ending source of energy and it seemed like the rogues were.
Cain tugged my hand so I looked back at him, ushering my chant into a louder octave and a faster pace.
As we did, Beenie left Cain’s side and narrowed her eyes behind him.
Still chanting, I watched her move with calculated steps towards the treeline behind Cain’s back.
She gave a warning growl, her black leather, fiery hair, and crossed arms making her an intimidating wolf to come across.
But a rogue came out in wolf form with a sneer of its own.
Beenie shook her head. “Don’t rogue. It’s not worth your life,” she warned.
The rogue sneered, the side of its muzzle pulling up as it took another step.
Beenie growled again. “Don’t make me do this, I’m warning you,” she snarled.
Cain looked distracted, his eyes trying to see over his shoulder, his words turning sluggish and slow.
I tugged his hand, pulling his focus in like mine had been, and I caught something in his eyes. Fear. Pain. Regret.
Sorrow.
It was deep, and I didn’t understand it until the rogue took that extra step.
Beenie didn’t turn like I thought she would.
Instead, she caught the leaping wolf and threw it to the side.
It landed in a lump on the grass, its eyes white, its body limp.
Beenie grunted, falling to her knees, clutching her stomach as she whimpered.
She crunched her eyes shut and my eyes raised. Cain gritted his teeth, clutching my hands tighter.
Beenie shook her head and turned to Cain, her face paler than normal, her eyes cloudy like Brax’s got.
“Don’t stop. I’m okay,” she said hoarsely before coughing and spitting blood on the grass.
Cain growled through the words, saying them faster.
I had to find out what the hell was going on. What Beenie was.
She wasn’t all wolf, that was clear.
But I stored it with my other questions for her and Cain and steeled my shoulders.
I used all the strength I had, pouring every hope I had for the pack and my family into my words.
If the lake doubted my intentions after that, then we would have to find another way to protect it.
But as I thought it, the lake changed.
The sprawling lake of water turned crystal blue, shimmering like silver sparkles were embedded in every particle of water.
It flowed easily, back to its normal consistency, if not even more watery.
I let out a breath as Cain stopped chanting.
“Finally,” he growled, then ripped off the vine and ran to Beenie.
He whispered in her ear as she leaned against him. He collapsed into her too, both of them recovering there on the grass as if the war was won.
But it wasn’t.
It was still going, wolves from the pack and from the rogues’, tearing each other to pieces. It was heartbreaking.
I turned and Derik was panting. There was a substantial pile of broken arrows around us, the grass dying where the arrowhead touched.
He kept his strength in me though, so did Kai even though he was ripping his teeth through another rogue.
Brax was using his shadows, flipping rogues over, rebounding arrows, shielding the pack with them.
As soon as he saw that I was free of the vine, he pushed his shadows at me, smothering me in them, checking over me.
I met his with mine, comforting them so he knew I was okay and I knew he was.
Kai came over, his muzzle covered in blood. Brax walked over, his torso in the same state. Derik was somehow still dressed but his shirt was untucked from his breeches and his brow was damp, his curls sticking to it.
They had protected me and I needed to make sure it was worth it so I picked up an arrow from the ground and turned to the lake.
I didn’t touch the head but took a deep breath, holding it, praying to the realm that the spell had worked.
I knelt and dipped the arrowhead into the lake. It burned instantly, sending fire up my arm. I dropped the arrowhead and the lake splashed it back onto the grass.
I grinned then dipped my fingers in.
The water was calming, refreshing.
The spell had worked.
I let out my breath and grinned up at my proud Alphas.
That relief lasted for all of a second when there was a slow clap echoing through the trees.
I turned to the right where the sound was coming from.
Heather came through with a scowl, slowly clapping. Her coat flared out behind her from the clasp at her waist. She wore leather pants under it and a ruffled shirt at the front that had blood spatter on it.
She wiped a stray drop from her lip with her tongue then sighed, looking at the lake.
