“Remove the powder!” Derik called.
I glanced over, wondering if I’d make it, but the rogue saw his moment and took it.
He came at me, tackling me to the ground. His talon sliced through my shoulder, and I screamed at the instant searing pain.
I used that pain to fight him off, kicking him back with my shadows helping.
I tried my magic, but it was waning. The pain in my shoulder was enough to have it distracted trying to heal me.
I scrambled to my feet, my head pounding from where it had smacked the ground.
“You’ll never get me out of here? How can you not see this is deluded?” I snarled, my shadows pulling back a little as my stomach tightened.
Damn, I was weaker than I had thought.
My eyes blanked for a second and when I opened them, the rogue had me by the throat.
“Wrong. If I have you, I have the Alpha’s balls in my hands,” he grinned, his lips by my face. His breath was fucking rancid.
I gagged, my eyes watering before I shoved my knee into his gut.
I was aiming for his groin but I was used to tall Alphas not medium-build rogues.
It still made him release me.
I ran for the door, going for the powder but the rogue recovered fast.
He tripped me.
I tumbled, splaying my hands to catch my fall when shadows held me, stopping me from collapsing onto my stomach.
I let out a breath and looked up to see Brax’s shadows around me.
They could get through the powder. I smirked then kicked the rogue in the face with my boot as he scrambled up my legs.
He bellowed, cupping his jaw as his mouth bled.
I got to my feet with Brax’s help then kicked the powder out of the way.
My Alphas burst in the room, going for the rogue.
Kai dragged him up by his throat, squeezing until he went purple.
“Wait! Don’t kill him. He can tell us what the rogues are planning,” I said.
Kai’s jaw ticked and he looked like he would rather do anything other than let him go but he did, dropping the rogue to the floor.
Brax stayed by me and the twins, cupping my cheek, checking over my body.
I took the shield away from the crib so he could check them over too.
Derik strode up to the rogue.
“How did you know about the tunnels?” He growled, his voice in full Alpha mode.
The rogue spat blood at him, “I ain’t telling you shit.”
Kai gripped him by the hair, holding him up by it, making the rogue squawk in pain.
He put the rogue back on his knees.
“How?” Derik demanded.
The rogue grinned, blood staining his teeth.
He wasn’t going to talk without some heavy influencing. I knew Kai was looking forward to that part, but I didn’t want the twins seeing it.
“How about we reduce the trauma in the twins by torturing the rogue elsewhere, hmm?” I said.
Derik looked over his shoulder at me and then the twins who Brax was standing in front of so they couldn’t see.
Derik nodded once then looked at Kai, “Take him to the dungeons, we’ll get the information we need from him,” he ordered.
Kai’s grin spread wide a second before the rogue laughed.
“How? I walked. But that is the only answer you’ll get from me,” the rogue said, his face turning vicious before he lifted his talons to his neck and ripped through his own throat.
The blood sprayed over us, and I shielded the twins before it got them.
Delicious.
The rogue slumped to the ground, his blood spilling over the rug I adored.
I huffed and kicked his lifeless hand.
“We have got to stop doing this in the nursery,” I snapped.
“That rogue might not be the only one that got in, we have to get you somewhere safe,” Derik said.
Kai’s smile that had dropped when his new torture toy had been literally ripped away from him, grew again.
“Pack up the twins. I know where we have to hide you, Little Luna,” Kai said and even though he had his crazy out, I trusted him, quickly grabbing whatever I could into a bag.
18. The Border
Lorelai
I packed the twins’ things into bags, listening to the chaos in the pack link. The wolves were canvassing the city, checking every house and building for any sign or scent of rogues.
They hadn’t found any yet, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there.
The tunnels were being barricaded, the warriors were on high alert.
It was all hands on deck, and I was planning on leaving? It seemed wrong, but I had to keep the twins safe.
And I was still weak. I had to admit that to myself. The constant shields and barriers, the spell, it had taken a lot more than I thought.
My hands shook as I shoved Enzi’s blankie into the bag. Then her bunny teddy. Her book. Then I grabbed Zale’s wolf.
His teddy. His rattle.
My body ached, my head throbbed, but I couldn’t stop.
I had to keep them safe.
Pain pulsed in my head, brighter and sharper until I had to pause my packing. I held my head in my hands and took steadying breaths, hoping the pain would pass.
But it didn’t. It got worse and my vision blurred.
I sunk onto the sofa and clutched the edges, clenching my eyes shut as I did.
‘The border!’ The pack started calling through the link.
I tried to strengthen the magic in my body, but I could only get a loose grasp on it.
I pulled on my shadows for strength when Kai was there, hauling me into him. “Little Luna, take a minute,” he whispered against me.
I leaned my head on his shoulder, taking more breaths, trying to see through the cloud in my mind that was stopping me from getting to my magic.
It was there, buzzing inside me like it always was, but I couldn’t reach it.
“What’s the border doing?” I trembled.
I couldn’t feel it or even see it in my mind. I felt the strain on my magic, so I knew it was still there, but how strong was it?
