“It doesn’t matter. If you can’t hold it, then we fight. We’ve been doing that for a long time before we had a Luna to protect us,” Kai smiled against me.
I gave him a small smile then looked over at the twins. Brax was wrapping Enzi to him, his shadows moving over to me.
He covered me in them, giving me the strength and comfort I needed to get through the dizziness.
It helped, and I drew on more of the strength they offered.
Derik gave me his, pulling Zale into the wrap he wore.
Kai held me and helped me stand.
I blinked away the cloudiness and made sure I was steady before I went back to my magic.
I tightened my hold on it, checking on the border myself.
It was weak but it had held.
I wasn’t sure for how long it would though.
Especially since Kai hadn’t told me where he was taking me and the twins to keep us safe.
“Where are we going? I don’t think I can be too far away from the border to hold it,” I admitted.
Kai smiled, “Magic won’t be a problem where we are going,” he grinned, pulling a cloak onto my shoulders.
I frowned at that but he gave nothing away.
The pack link was still loud with wolves clearing buildings, running the perimeter, and blocking the tunnels.
But the border was stable for now and if a rogue was trying to get out, I would feel it.
“Should I border the tunnels?” I asked tentatively. I immediately felt Derik’s refusal, which I had expected.
“At the risk of you being defiant and doing something we have told you not to, I don’t think it’s a good idea while you are this weak, Spitfire. Save some of that strength for the birth,” Brax said.
It was what I had been thinking too.
“We’ll handle the tunnels, Little Luna,” Kai stated.
I sighed and nodded. I had to give a little, I couldn’t protect it all when the rogues were intentionally draining me.
It was clear from the little the rogue had revealed that their plan was to wean me of my magic bit by bit.
Unfortunately, it seemed to have worked.
I was on the dregs of my energy, leaning on the Alphas more than I wanted to be at this stage of the war.
I thought I wouldn’t hit that point until after the birth, but of course, that wasn’t the way it had played out, and I had to accept that.
Kai grabbed a few of my things and shoved them into the bag, still ordering his warriors in the link as he did.
Derik was talking fast with the council on his end of the link while Brax ordered the women, children, and non-warriors back to their homes, closing the city down.
“We have to go before the rogues attack,” Derik said, his eyes narrowing outside the window.
“You think they will?” I asked.
Brax was the one that answered, “If they see the border is less effective. It would follow that they would choose that time to attack.”
“Will you be with me or here with the city?” I asked as Kai led us out of the room.
“We will be with you. We have the pack link to keep us connected and if we are needed, only one of us will leave,”
Derik explained.
I followed them down the hall, wincing as my body ached a little more than normal. The magic in me wavered.
Something shoved against the border and I stumbled against Kai who caught me.
A growl erupted from deep in his chest.
‘Explosives!’ The pack link went crazy as the warriors reported back that the border was being attacked.
I shuddered as another one hit.
I knew it was being attacked because I felt the rebounding explosions inside me.
But I held my magic strong, refusing to let the flames touch the city.
Kai roared down the link, sending order after order, putting his warriors into formation, sending the initiates into protective duty throughout the streets too.
“I can hold it,” I strained, but Kai ignored me as the other two did, and they led me up the stairs of the mansion.
The opposite direction I thought they were going to lead me in.
“This is not the way out?” I asked.
“I’m not leading you out. It’s not safe outside these walls,” Kai said.
I frowned, following him through the halls, checking over my shoulder every few seconds for the twins with Brax and Derik.
“Shouldn’t I stay? Especially if the city is under attack?”
“No. Not when you are what they are after. C’mon, almost there,” Kai said and led me up into a part of the mansion I recognized.
“We’re going to see Beenie and Cain?” I asked.
“No,” Kai said, knocking on the door of Beenie and Cain’s suite.
Well, that cleared everything up.
“Trust him, Beautiful, he’s thought this one through or I wouldn’t be letting you leave,” Derik said, and it was enough to have my curiosity killed for a moment.
But no one answered the door.
Kai frowned and knocked again.
Brax scoffed and shoved the door open, not waiting to be told to go in.
If I was worried about Beenie’s reaction to the intrusion, I didn’t need to be.
They weren’t there.
“They never leave,” I whispered, my heart racing.
“Then I’ll apologize for breaking in later,” Kai mumbled, then went in and started going through Beenie’s paintings.
I frowned as he removed cover after cover, obviously looking for something specific.
Derik and Brax helped, but I had no idea what they were looking for.
Until they found it.
Brax pulled a large canvas painting from next to the fireplace, hidden by the leather armchair.
“Put it back, in case they have it hidden there for a reason,” Kai murmured, then went over to it.
I recognized it instantly.
“This is Tabby’s place,” I said, looking at the paint strokes across the canvas that made up her living area. It showed her sofa, her throws, her cluttered cabinetry.
To the exact detail.
Brax put it back where he had found it then Kai walked up to it.
