“Where is Galen?” I demanded.
Kai had sent for him in the link hours ago but he still wasn’t here.
“He’s trying to get here, Little Luna. He has to be careful moving around the rogues. If they scent him and follow him
–“
“I don’t care!” I screamed, my body tightening again.
It was excruciating.
Tears streamed down my cheeks and Derik’s jaw clenched.
“Have you heard from him?” He asked Kai.
“He is going around the grasslands, running the long way around the back of the city in the forest so he doesn’t cross near the water pack area,” Kai muttered.
“And the rogues?” I asked through a gritted jaw.
“Distracted.” Kai didn’t elaborate, but I felt the omission in the link.
“The border?” I snapped, not in the mood for his neglectful information.
He shook his head. “It has been down since you started birthing, Little Luna, but the wolves are handling it,” he said.
I sucked in a breath, grimacing when it brought on another contraction. I screamed for the next few minutes, concentrating on remembering to breathe.
The pain was worse this time; it had to be. Why would I have chosen to do this again if it was this bad?
Brax moved to sit next to me, his hand grabbing mine so I could squeeze as more involuntary tears fell.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. I knew I couldn’t help it, that my body and magic were busy birthing, but I felt bad for the wolves.
They were fighting for our city, and the one job I had to do to help, I couldn’t do when it mattered the most.
“No. Don’t, Spitfire. You have kept us protected, saved us from the rogues’ wrath for a long time now. It is our turn now, to save you,” Brax said, kissing my lips softly.
I whimpered, curling into him as Derik traced my skin with his damp cloth.
Cain felt my stomach, holding his hand over it, his magic reading whatever it needed to.
He frowned and looked over at Kai, “We need Galen,” he urged.
Kai glared and turned away, holding his temples. I was guessing to yell at Galen.
I didn’t have it in me to tell him not to.
My contractions went on and on. I curled into one of my Alphas when they hit and tried to breathe through it, but it was getting harder and harder to do.
I had been in the tub, I had moved around, using every surface to lean on. I’d had herbs that Galen had linked me to have.
And still I labored.
I was wearing thin, my energy depleting. The twins were restless and I was trying to stop myself from screaming as much, but it was hard to do when my entire body was at its physical limit.
My hair was tied in a rough bun with the tendrils sticking to my damp forehead and neck.
My muslin was hanging low on my thighs but had stains of blood and my waters.
I didn’t care.
I swayed with Derik, moving my hips as they felt like they were breaking.
“I’m so tired,” I cried against him.
“I know, Beautiful. But you are doing so well,” he soothed, patting down my hair, tracing his fingertips down my back.
I closed my eyes, taking the small break I had between contractions to catch my breath and my sanity.
“Galen will be here soon,” Kai said, “He thought he was being followed and has had to change routes.”
I tried not to let that get to me, but my heart raced.
What if Galen was followed? What if the rogues attacked us here?
“They won’t, Spitfire. The vampires are helping, running with Galen so his scent is masked,” Brax offered.
It helped. Slightly.
But it didn’t help the pain that built in my pelvis again.
I clutched Derik who held me back, rubbing my back harder as I winced, whimpering through the contraction that destroyed my insides.
It was becoming harder to accept the idea that we would be okay. That I would be.
The pain was so much more than I had expected.
I used my shadows and checked the baby. It had a healthy heartbeat, but that didn’t reassure me that it would make it either.
My mind despaired the longer it was in pain.
I tried to stop it but I wasn’t in any state to do much more than breathe and cry.
And right when I was about to scream for it to all stop, to get the baby out however they needed to, to beg for them to take over, there was a soft touch on my shoulder.
The touch came with a familiar scent of patchouli and spices.
Tabitha.
I spun to the touch, holding my lower stomach, my eyes watering.
“Tabby?” I asked, tears falling.
Her form was ethereal, floating in a translucent way but her slow smile was very real.
Derik tensed, Brax swore, and Kai sucked in a breath.
“Mom,” Cain said, his voice cracking.
She looked at him and her smile spread.
“Don’t act so surprised, child, you knew I was here in one way or another,” she gave him that knowing look I had missed so much.
“How?” I whispered.
“You asked for help. I’m here to help,” she shrugged then hobbled– even as a ghost, she walked with her hunched limp– over to her cabinets.
She started moving things, humming to herself.
I had missed that hum.
“I’m afraid Galen is going to take a little bit to get here. I sense he will be running into trouble in a moment. He will get here though. In the meantime, how about we get you slightly more comfortable, hmm?” She asked, not looking at me.
She started pulling out her herbs, her spell bowl, flipping through the pages of her spell book.
Cain moved straight to her side, starting to mix the things she told him to.
“You’re really here?” I asked tightly as another pain started to build.
She nodded, coming over to me, grabbing my hands in hers.
I could feel her.
I wasn’t sure how, she was a ghost but her touch was there, against my skin. I knew it as surely as I knew I was in labor.
