It was low cut though. I ran my fingers over my cleavage and eyed Kai, ‘ Your meal awaits, ‘ I teased back. I heard his growl even from down on the path. ~’I’m coming back to devour you, Little Luna, wait for me,’~ he promised.
I nodded and waved as he led Galen and Mom’s carriage down through the city towards the gate. I laughed and ran inside. Kai was tempting and waiting for him sounded like one hell of an option but if I let him get his hands on me, I wouldn’t be leaving the bed. But Derik needed me.
He was being stubborn in thinking he didn’t, but I felt his soul begging for mine. Our mating link was strained, and I was not about to have that. He wouldn’t do that either if the tables were turned. So I waited until Kai was further away, already having told Vaughn of my mad dash idea.
I tucked my long white hair behind an ear, then grabbed my skirts, which I was second-guessing. Then I ran down the stone steps of the mansion and stepped towards the barn. But I didn’t get far.
I walked fast, looking everywhere in case someone tried to stop me or my Alphas appeared, but I failed to check at my back. Until it was too late.
I peered over, gasping, my hand flying to my chest when I saw Brax strolling behind me with his hands in his pockets, smirking at me. “Brax, you gave me a fright,” I said, waiting for him to casually get to me before smacking his arm playfully.
“Good. You didn’t even sense me, Spitfire. What if I had been the traitor, hmm?” He asked. “Then I would have used my magic on you,” I shrugged, walking with him. He hadn’t steered me away from my very obvious trajectory towards the barn, so I wasn’t about to mention it.
“And if I had protection from the witches?” He asked. “Shadows.” I had already thought of it all, “And I knew if I really was in trouble, I could have opened any link in my mind and had help. I wasn’t being an idiot, Brax. I just want to help. I am a part of the pack too,” I said, putting my arm through his and leaning my head on his shoulder.
“Which is why I am escorting you to the barn,” Brax said. “You’re not going to tell me to go back to the mansion and stay there? If I had known that, I would’ve escaped a day ago,” I scoffed.
Brax laughed and we got closer, moving down the path that towered with the wolves’ homes on either side. “I wanted to see how long it would take you and how you’d do it. I had you figured out since you got up extra early this morning.
You don’t opt to get up early unless you’re excited about something. Kind of gave yourself away there, Spitfire,” Brax chuckled.
“Damn. So Derik knows I’m coming?” Brax shook his head, his laugh sobering, “No. He’s too strained to put that together. He can’t tap into a link he doesn’t have at the moment. He needs you, even if he doesn’t think so,” Brax said. I nodded. Which was exactly why I was going to the barn.
When we got there, I strode in like I was meant to be there and went straight to Derik. He had his eyes closed, sitting in a chair opposite a wolf from the warriors. Derik’s face was pinched, his forearm alongside the warrior’s, their hands clasped together.
The wolf had pursed lips and a frown but he kept silent. “You shouldn’t be here, Beautiful,” Derik said a second later, breaking the connection with the wolf. They nodded to each other and the wolf stood. Then stumbled. Ryleigh caught him and led him out as if it was totally normal for the wolves to be so weak.
Derik stayed sitting, his usually darker golden skin pale. He looked so washed out. I sunk onto his lap and held his face in my hands. “Mate, you are concerning me. Our strength is collective and together, we can do this. You cannot do it on your own,” I warned.
Derik kissed me like he was trying to kiss away my worries. It didn’t work. “You should be with the children,” he said.
I gritted my teeth, clenching them together to stop myself from lashing out at that comment.
“I should be with whoever needs me. At this moment, it is you,” I said. Derik went to talk but Kai barreled in, shoving through both doors to the barn that Ryleigh had just gone through with the other wolf.
“Wrong. I always need you, Little Luna,” he grinned, “I also picked up on the excitement in our link and knew I would find you here.” I smiled, my Alphas knew me too well. I was going to have to up my hide-and-seek game.
“You should all go about your duties, I am not finished here,” Derik sighed. “I think I’ll stay. I want to see what you are doing,” I said. My curiosity had been piqued for days and it was less satisfied with every day that passed.
“We can’t have our mate unsatisfied, D. It’s the rules,” Kai smirked, tugging my hair back and kissing me harshly while I sat on Derik’s lap. “Kai, she should not be here–” “I am though,” I interrupted before they could talk about me like I wasn’t here, or worse, like I was a child.
But I was their mate and I could handle it. They knew I had handled worse. “I’ll stay with her Derik. She won’t siphon,” Brax said. My brow furrowed as I stood from Derik. I hadn’t heard of that in a while.
“Siphon? Why would I?” Derik sighed and turned to face me as I climbed off of him. “Our mating bond might want to.
If it feels what I’m doing, what it takes, it might try to stop me by taking what it can.”
“Well I have had control of that for a long time now, I’m sure I will be able to stop myself,” I argued. Derik looked unsure about that. So did the others. “I won’t siphon. I’ll control it,” I tried again.
“I say we let her be here. You know you’ll be stronger with her here, D.” Kai was always in my corner. I smiled at him and he winked. “She has had control of it for a long time. We should try. Our shadows might help get a sense of anything off,” Brax offered. Derik was outvoted again and he knew it.
“This voting system is not working. You two will agree with anything she says,” Derik rolled his eyes. “Probably,” Kai grinned. Brax shrugged, “Not all the time but I do think you need her here. You’re not going to make it through many more wolves if you don’t get some help. Ryleigh is your beta and is probably the reason you have gotten this far but that won’t last long, D.”
Brax seemed to get through to him and he finally nodded. “Fine. But say nothing and sit up there on the walkway–“
he pointed to the wooden platform at the top of the barn, “–so your presence is less noticeable. Your scent is very distracting,” he said.
I nodded, vowing to be on my best behavior. I didn’t miss the scoff in the link from Kai at that. I smirked and gave Derik a kiss then went to the ladder that led up to the wooden platform.
I climbed it, leaning over the railing to wait for Brax but he was whispering with Derik and Kai. I frowned and tried to get in the link. They had shut me out. That hurt and my heart pinched. “Mates,” I warned.
Kai turned to me and came over to the ladder. He climbed up as Brax left and Derik turned to face the chair again. I sat down on the platform and hung my legs over the side of it. Kai sat down next to me and I looked down at Derik.
“What does he have to do?” I asked. “Connect past the pack link to the personal stuff. Most wolves can’t but Alphas can. Most would have killed themselves by doing it this many times in a row though. It lets in every emotion, memory, and thought they’ve ever had, and Derik has to comb through it.”
I sucked in a breath. No wonder he was fucked. “Can’t we just ask them if they did it? Brax and I could feel out the lie with our shadows?” Kai shook his head, “No. Not with the witches involved. We have to go somewhere they can’t alter.
Scent, they can.”
“But we fixed that,” I whispered as Ryleigh brought the next wolf in. Another warrior. “Yeah, but we don’t know what we will be able to sense. This is a sure thing.” I wanted to argue that there had to be another way, but I went quiet so I could watch from above.
Kai’s powerful thigh brushed mine and immediately distracted me. His eyes met mine, the connection instant. His hand went to the top of my thigh, and I bit my tongue to stop from teasing him right back. I looked down to where Derik was explaining the process to the wolf.
“I am going to take a look at your memories, thoughts, and emotions since being in the pack. I will dig into your personal side too. If there is anything you want to admit or come clean about now beforehand, then do it now,” Derik offered.
Kai’s hand moved further up my thigh. My breath hitched, and I clutched the edge of the wooden platform as my stomach stirred. I hadn’t been with my Alphas since giving birth, which for a human, I had heard that was regular. For a healed Luna? It was torture. For Kai as well, apparently.
“Uh, well there is one thing…” The wolf grew nervous. I perked up at that. Kai did too. Derik scowled, “Speak.” “Well I was meant to be on patrol a few nights ago but Maisie was looking so good so I might have snuck away to Junipers for a quick fuck before heading back to my post,” he grimaced.
Derik rolled his eyes, “Stay at your post, Quinn. You know better. But that’s not what I was talking about. Anything to doing with working with the rogues?” Derik asked. Kai moved his hand again, his fingers brushing the V between my legs. My breaths were short and sharp as I swallowed.
My pussy pulsed and I bit down on my lip. Quinn shook his head at Derik then offered his hand, “I have nothing to hide when it comes to them Alpha Derik. They can all burn for all I care. See for yourself,” he said. Derik nodded once then grabbed his hand.
The second he did, my heart clenched, the mating link tugged. Derik’s Alpha aura pulsed, radiating through the barn.
My head throbbed and I forgot about everything but the rapid increase in Derik’s heart rate. My mating link triggered and tugged on my conscious.
My skin tingled and my shadows grew restless in the silence. Ryleigh stood there, behind Quinn as Derik’s eyes stayed closed. He had his hand clutching Quinn’s forearm, Quinn doing the same back. It looked like a simple thing but it was far from it.
Emotions filled me, so many of them swirling as Derik read Quinn.
The intensity had me in its clutches, and it wasn’t until Derik started swaying, his breaths harsher, his pain filling me, that I knew what the Alphas had meant.
My body was demanding that I help my mate. He was in pain, struggling. I couldn’t just sit there.
“We could do something else instead,” Kai whispered, his hand pressing in so hard that my dress was no match.
I caught Kai’s hand. “We can’t. Not here,” I said quietly.
Kai grinned and pulled my mouth to his, kissing me harshly.
“Here. It distracts the mating link from wanting to siphon and gives Derik the power to keep going. If we are fucking, we are feeding the mating strength. It’s what he needs, Little Luna. And it is definitely what I need,” he smirked.
I frowned at the easy explanation and realized that I had been played.
“That’s what you were whispering about down there, wasn’t it? You came up here for that exact reason.”
Kai grinned. “Little Luna, whose idea did you think this was?”
I shook my head, a smirk playing on my lips.
I looked down at Derik, noticing how Ryleigh discreetly slipped out the door.
“Will this really help him?”
Kai nodded. “Yes.”
That was the only prompting I needed.
I met Kai’s mouth in a hot clash of our lips. I slipped my tongue along his, grabbing behind his neck.
He moved faster than I did, one kiss setting him off like a bomb.
He gripped my hips, moving me back with a strong grip and only his arms.
I gasped and he kissed me harder, his tongue stroking mine.
My core lit so bright, the tingles on my skin turning to something more sinister beneath his touch.
He laid me down on the wood, still smothering my mouth with his.
I arched into him as he tugged my dress down lightly, caressing over my breasts. They were full and not technically his yet with Alaric so young, but that didn’t stop him kissing over the flesh on the side of one.
His hand moved to yank up my skirt, finding my center beneath my panties like it was a beacon.
