Zale seemed to have figured that out and was very good at keeping her content.
“Do you think we will be able to beat them?” I asked.
“Normally, yes. But the witches let Danika tell us about the betas, which means they wanted us to know about them.
That makes me unsure.”
Derik sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as Enzi climbed on his leg. He grinned down at her, and she yanked on his vest.
It was brown leather over his tucked-in shirt.
She climbed into his lap and curled up, her thumb going to her mouth. Derik held her there, then leaned back on one hand.
“So what do we do with that?” I asked.
“I don’t know. I’ve asked for a council meeting. One with all the council. Vamps and humans. So they’re on their way,”
he explained.
I nodded.
“Good,” I put Alaric on my shoulder and tapped his back.
“And the witches?” Ryleigh asked.
“That is where I come in. I have to go see Cain. Work with him on how to beat the witches.”
I wrapped Alaric up after he was winded and handed him to Derik. He curled his son into him and shook his head when I went to move Enzi off him. She had drifted off to sleep on his lap.
I smiled and leaned over to kiss him.
Then I took a sip of my tea and a bite of my cake.
I offered Ryleigh some but she shook her head.
“No thanks, I’m going to head down to my room with Althea and see if we can all nap with Vaughn. She’s not enjoying sleeping right now so neither are we,” she sighed and stood up.
We said goodbye and Zale crawled over to me. I pulled him onto my lap and kissed the top of his head.
“I’ve been thinking,” I murmured, knowing Derik wasn’t going to enjoy my train of thought.
“That doesn’t usually bode well for me,” he smirked.
I ignored that jibe. “I was thinking that now that we can sense the rogues, we could attack them instead of waiting for them to come at us? I have my magic back, I’m strong enough to–“
Brax and Kai came into the nursery then. “The rest of the pack are clear,” Brax said. “Brand free.” He sat down next to me and kissed Zale on the cheek then me.
I grinned and leaned my head on his shoulder.
Kai sat on the other side of the blanket on the floor. As soon as he did, Enzi roused from her nap on Derik’s lap.
She reached for Kai who grinned and brought her into his arms, “Come here, Baby Girl,” he whispered, then cradled her. She snuggled into him and went back to sleep.
“I’ll try not to take that personally,” Derik murmured, but there was a smirk on his lips.
Enzi had attached to Kai, but we were pretty sure it was because he had gotten a tattoo of a bunny added to his arm sleeve. She held it as she slept.
“Your turn next then, Kai?” Brax taunted.
Kai shrugged, “It’s always up to Little Luna.”
He was unfazed by the question, but my heart stopped. I had not forgotten the pain yet.
“How about we get rid of the rogues and witches first? I don’t have to be pregnant for every single war we endure,” I mumbled.
Brax laughed and brought my mouth to his.
“I was kidding, Spitfire, don’t freak out.”
“But–” Derik said, “If you are truly concerned about birthing again, we should talk to Cain about a contraceptive until you are ready.”
I probably should have talked to him about it as soon as I mated, but I had been preoccupied getting pregnant apparently.
I nodded, “I’ll talk to him. Until then, maybe we try the ‘not getting pregnant’ method?”
“If you are asking me not to fuck you, Little Luna, you might finally see me cry,” Kai grinned.
I rolled my eyes, throwing a piece of cake at him.
He grabbed it and ate it.
“We won’t come in you until you are ready,” Derik reiterated.
“What he means,” Brax leaned in, “Is that we won’t come between your legs. Your mouth is still fair game,” he winked.
I laughed.
My mates were full of jokes. They weren’t the ones who had to go through the pain.
So I was going to talk to Cain as soon as we had gone over the plan for the witches.
Which I wanted to talk to my Alpha about too but had been interrupted.
“I want to start putting attacks in play. We are sitting back behind the border and they are planning. I want to stop them from playing out whatever plan they have,” I said.
“You know I’m down for that,” Kai grinned, “My warriors have been going stir crazy stuck in this bubble.”
Brax helped Zale as he climbed over to his lap, “I am getting a little frustrated with sitting around and waiting for the next clue.”
We all turned to Derik. He was usually the one that was against attacking.
And he the one who considered the logic in the moves we impulsively made.
So when he nodded his head I almost passed out.
He smirked at me, “I can be reasonable. We are cleared of the traitor. We have the tunnels being blocked as we speak.
There are a few but they should be sealed within the week. If we leave the last exit out of the tunnels clear and use the border to protect it then we have an escape route if we need it.”
I nodded, I was on board with this plan.
“And we have my magic back. Cain’s potions he has been working on. Brax’s shadows. I think we have a chance if we attack while they think we are planning for the betas,” I said.
I agreed with Derik that they wanted us to know about it. I wasn’t sure why but I was not taking any chances.
I wanted to get on the front foot. I wanted this to be done. I wanted the life I thought we were heading into after the vampires.
The witches were meant to uphold the balance but they weren’t, they were turning the realm, turning us on each other. It wasn’t something I wanted to just let happen. I wanted them to know we were wolves and we were going down with a fight.
Or preferably not going down at all.
Kai stood up and put Enzi in her crib.
“I’ll go talk to the warriors, prepare the initiates for what this means,” Kai said.
I stood up too, “No.”
He raised a brow at me, a smirk playing on his lips, “Dangerous word to use around me when we have been talking about fucking you Little Luna. I will happily fill your mouth with something other than disobedience.”
I grinned, “I think we should talk to the pack together. This affects us all. We don’t just need warriors. Or initiates. We need women who want to fight for their children. Wolves who want to fight for their homes, their stores, their city,” I said.
Kai raised a brow and Brax stood to put Zale in the crib with Enzi.
Derik stood too, putting Alaric in the bassinet next to the crib.
