I tried to believe it but it wasn’t coming through with as much gumption as I’m sure he meant it.
“You, Kai, and Derik aren’t talking. I’m messed up. Our kids are in danger once again and now we have another piece of the puzzle that we have no idea what to do with,” I despaired.
Brax lifted his hand to the side of my face, stopping the movement of the cloth, “We will be okay, Spitfire. And so will you. You just can’t give up on that yet. We’re way too early in this war.”
“It feels like this war is never going to end,” I murmured.
Brax left me with that then kept taking care of me, washing my hair, lathering me in soap, then getting me out to dry and oil me.
I said nothing as he did, letting him do what he needed to. I wanted to stop him, tell him that I should be caring for him after fucking him up with my magic.
‘You didn’t. We took him while we could. He needed to see.’ The whispers said in my head and I tensed.
Brax did too, looking around with a frown.
“You heard them too?” I asked.
He nodded, “Yeah.”
“Normally I am the only one that can hear them,” I admitted. Brax shrugged, pulling on my nightgown.
“I guess I can now that we have been connected through them.”
“A winterborn thing?” I assumed.
‘Yes,’ the witches echoed.
“See? This wasn’t you, Spitfire,” he begged and I held him.
I didn’t want to talk anymore. I just wanted to sleep.
He sighed and gave up, leading me out into the suite where Derik and Kai were.
They had the children with them.
“They were asking for Brax,” Derik murmured.
“Dadda,” Zale said clear as anything, squeezing his little fists over and over as he reached for Brax.
“Holy shit– I mean shoot,” he said, going for Zale and scooping him up off the bed.
I grinned, “He’s been saying that since we got you back here and to the hospital,” I admitted.
“And I missed it? Damn,” he said then kissed Zale’s head, “Dadda’s here. I’m not going anywhere, little guy.”
That reassured me too, and I laid down on the bed, Enzi curling into me.
Brax moved between my legs, holding Zale as he got comfortable there. Derik climbed in, facing me, putting Alaric next to Enzi.
Kai got in last, coming in behind to spoon me.
And it wasn’t claustrophobic or uncomfortable. It was perfect. Everything I wanted in one space, in my space.
I finally fell into a deep sleep, one that held no nightmares and no fear of what was coming next.
Because I felt the connection in every one of us. We were a family, close and unstoppable. The rogues, Heather, even the witches might think that we are breakable, but I knew in that moment, that she was wrong.
The next day was tense for the Alphas but not for me.
We sat in our private dining room with the children, and I stuffed my face with all the food I hadn’t been able to eat the last two days.
It was amazing.
I emptied my plate and shoved it away, then looked at my Alphas.
Derik with his soft brown curls on top of his head, Kai with his wavy dark strands, Brax with his longer blonde hair in a top knot, the blue braid on his shoulder.
All of them glaring. Derik and Kai had pursed lips, staring at Brax like they were ready to tear into him.
“Can you three stop this?” I asked, looking over at the kids in the playpen, blissfully ignorant to the rift in our family.
Thankfully.
Brax put his knife and fork down, “I’m sorry, okay? To you both.” Brax tried, and I appreciated that, but Derik and Kai did not look like they were ready to forgive and forget.
“Don’t let her do this. If we keep fighting, then Heather wins. We have to do this together or we might as well not do it at all,” I said, sipping my tea, my long white dress flowing out around me. It was one of my more luxurious ones.
But I was feeling good about today.
It was warm, the sun was out, and I wanted to feel it all on my skin even if it was through the windows.
“I don’t trust him,” Kai snapped, nodding at Brax.
Brax growled, “I got Heather, she is weak. That gives us a chance. And I saw something while I was out,” he explained.
That had Dreik’s glare turning to a frown. He leaned forward, “What was it?”
“Cages in a mountain. Some witches being held there. They’re being used and tortured,” he said.
“I hear them whisper, and now Brax can too,” I added.
“And that is worth the hell of the last couple of days? You were in pain, suffering Little Luna. Because of him. It should never be us that cause you that much pain,” Kai said, looking at me, ignoring Brax.
I put my hand over Kai’s, “I was in pain because I was guilty, Kai. Not because of what he did,” I explained.
“What else did the witches in the mountain tell you?” Derik asked, not giving away anything on whether he forgave Brax or not.
I took a sip of water, my throat dry. The sun was shining brighter through the windows, my skin taking in the heat easily.
It warmed me down to my bones and I looked over at the kids playing in the rays of it.
I wanted them to grow up knowing that kind of warmth on the outside and the inside. Which is why I needed to get the Alphas to see eye to eye again.
It became a singular goal in my mind.
Even while Brax recited all the riddles from the story he had told me from his time in the caves, I was thinking of how to bring them together again.
I felt off, so disconnected when they were not in sync with each other.
It was a tension we didn’t need.
Once Brax finished his story, I sipped more water then looked over at Derik who was frowning, turning his fork in his hand.
Kai had stood up, gone to the window and was looking out on the city.
They were planning the best course of action in their heads. Separately.
Usually we planned together.
I shook my head. This was going to be harder than I thought.
We’d never had to deal with this before. We had been lucky so far to avoid the pinch of a normal relationship. Our trials had been external.
I wasn’t sure what that meant for us once it turned internal.
All I knew is that I was going to let go of us without a fight.
“We are not going to make you fight for his, Beautiful. We can behave like mates, not savages,” Derik said then eyed Brax and Kai.
Brax nodded but Kai just sneered.
I rolled my eyes, “I am going to take the children back to the nursery. When I get back, you three better have sorted your shit out because our focus has to be on the rogues and whoever those witches Brax saw are. Not each other,” I snapped then went to Zale and Enzi.
I scooped them up and walked them upstairs to the nursery. They were getting heavier, so it was a task, making my skin prickly and damp.
