It was all I could get out, and maybe it would be enough. Brax held Kai as the witch cackled.
“Zale. Enzi. I need you to come to mommy, okay? Can you do that?” I begged them. They had magic, they could come to me.
‘Don’t do it, little creature. I will stick mommy too,’ the witch warned down at Zale and Enzi before she looked at Alaric in the wrap.
Derik got to his feet and was ready to go again, but the witch glared at him. ‘Same goes for you, daddy,’ she warned, ~’I don’t particularly need a werewolf. I will get rid of the boy if you take another step.’~
Derik’s eyes crinkled and he stopped.
I looked at Zale, begging him to come to me. His eyes were wide and wise, watching everything.
But I knew he understood me. And he had the magic to come to me. So why the hell wouldn’t he?
And then it clicked.
He had the magic.
Everything pieced together in an instant and I eyed Beenie who gave me a slight nod, confirming it.
This was exactly what was meant to happen.
I wasn’t meant to beat the witch. I wasn’t strong enough.
But the heirs? They were. If they were close and caught her off guard.
Beenie and Cain hadn’t betrayed us. Neither had my magic.
I let out a breath as the witch inspected my children.
I tensed, not knowing what she planned on doing to get their magic.
“Please. Just let them go. You can have me, I’ll surrender,” I begged, playing the part I was meant to. If only to give them the best chance I could.
The witch laughed. ‘You assume I will let you live by choice. No, winterborn, you are meeting your death tonight. In fact,’
she moved forward, coming close to me.
I met her glare, refusing to back down.
‘I will start with you,’ she smirked.
‘Belinda, move out of the way. I want the Alphas to witness this. Even the dying one.’
Beenie stepped back with the twins. The witch handed the sword to Cain.
I hid my smirk but I knew what was happening.
It was playing out how it was meant to.
Cain had the sword.
The twins were ready and now I knew how the realm was going to get them to use their magic on the witch.
And I knew I was going to have to stay strong for it.
I went with the witch, facing my Alphas who I didn’t dare let know what the plan was in case she could read it in a link.
Their faces looked empty, dead. Like they were dying too. Maybe my death would kill them but I wasn’t dying.
Derik and Brax hung Kai between them, his wound still bleeding.
It was less now though and I had to trust that meant he would survive.
I stood in front of the pack who had happily fought for us and our heirs. All of them were solemn, all bowing their heads, waiting for my sacrifice. Even Taylor who was weak and shaking bowed.
They were my family too. And I was doing this for them.
As long as I held onto that when the witch siphoned me, I would be okay. I would survive.
The witch leaned down from her creepily tall height and her breath brushed against my ear. ‘Give the realm my best,’
she laughed then she gripped my shoulders, her talon nails digging into my flesh.
I screamed as her nails drew out my magic, yanking it from my soul, tearing it from the seams that made me who I was.
It was blinding, the pain so intense, my body tried to crumple, my heart tried to stop, my head tried to explode.
But I didn’t let it. Just like I didn’t make it easy for her to take my magic. I resisted, playing tug of war with her inside my body. But the longer she was there, the longer her magic burned.
My vision blurred, my skin prickled, and I hung on until I saw Beenie move in front of me, slowly, each step deliberate. Her eyes locked on the witch. Then mine.
She gave me a slight nod, and I drew on every ounce of strength I had left.
“Now!” Beenie screamed.
As soon as she did, Zale and Enzi’s magic poured from them. I dropped to the grass, the witch’s talons ripped out of my shoulders, and I spun. I aimed up with my own magic at the same time Cain launched at her back, embedding the sword in her flesh.
41. The Twins
Lorelai
The witch screeched. She arched, the blade straight through her heart poking out on our side. My magic and the twins twisted together, digging straight into the wound.
It started bleeding liquid gold, the light blinding as her screeches became worse and worse.
I dove for the witch before she fell, yanking Alaric from the wrap in her arms.
I bundled him close, looking down at him.
He stared up at me, his brow furrowed like Derik’s did when he was confused or worried.
I touched the small V then smiled, my tears fresh.
The witch went to her knees in front of me, her screech turning to a gargle as her mouth, her heart, and her eyes all leaked.
I stood slowly, my body so worn and used.
I felt the parts of my soul that had been damaged. It rubbed like sandpaper inside me as my magic tried to stitch it back together.
I looked down at the witch as she cried, half-dead in front of me.
Beenie came over with the twins.
Cain stood beside her, his sword coated in gold blood.
Derik and Brax pulled Kai over too.
We were the faces she needed to see before she died. Because we were the ones the realm had trusted to save it and we had.
“Give the realm my best,” I smirked, then opened my hand over her face.
My magic killed her, consuming her until she turned to ash, a wave of relief washing through everyone that was left.
The gold ash pile was tall and I wasn’t sure where it would go. I watched with the others as it floated into the air.
It split into four streams.
A stream went to Zale and then Enzi. They giggled and tried to catch the flakes. Their skin absorbed it.
Alaric cooed as more of the gold ash landed on him.
And the last stream soaked into my stomach.
I sucked in a breath as the warmth in my abdomen promised me my baby was still alive.
