Melinda Riley was now sparing no effort to denigrate her stepdaughter, fearing that this stepdaughter would rob her daughter of a good marriage.
“Evelyn is different. Evelyn is innocent! She is also Brian’s serious girlfriend right now. It’s only natural for her to become the best actress and marry into the Hart family,” The way that
Feng Cuie said it made it sound like Evelyn was going to be the queen of cinema tomorrow and instantly become the Hart family’s daughter-in-law.
Tony Cummins nodded and said, “Alright, then I’ll ask Grace to come home and talk to her. I’ll tell her to keep her distance from Brian and not meddle in Evelyn’s affairs.”
Evelyn and Melinda Riley looked at each other, their faces bright.
“Thanks, Dad,” Evelyn said. However, she started to look concerned. “But what if Sis won’t listen?”
“I’m her father. Unless her last name is not Cummins, she’ll have to do what I say!” Tony Cummins said, looking tough.
Evelyn lowered her head slightly, and a smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
Grace got a call at night from her father, Tony Cummins.
“Grace, you haven’t been back for a long time. Why don’t you come home, and we’ll talk about moving your mother’s grave?” Tony Cummins said.
“Moving her grave?” Grace was stunned.
“Yes, at first your mother was buried in the village cemetery, but now they’re renovating the place. The land is expropriated. A lot of graves there have to be relocated. You were in prison, so you didn’t know about this. The village has already sent out the documents,” Tony Cummins said.
Grace pursed her lips slightly. When her mother died, she did not buy a plot of ground in the public cemetery. Her father asked a friend who was from the village near Emerald City for help. There was a public cemetery in the village, and no money was needed, so her mother was buried there.
When her mother died, her father did not visit her for many years. It was not until later when she studied so hard till she was admitted to a prominent high school and even a prominent university that her father and stepmother went to pay their respects at her mother’s grave.
After she went to prison, her father and his family naturally did not visit her mother’s grave during Tomb Sweeping Day and Winter Solstice Festival.
After getting out of prison and visiting her mother’s grave, she saw that the weeds had grown so much that they almost covered the words on the gravestone. Cracks had also appeared on the gravestone. She thought of repairing the gravestone when she went to pay her respects on Tomb Sweeping Day, but she did not expect to move the grave completely.
“Fine, I’ll go back,” Grace said. She would never have agreed to go back if it had not been to discuss her mother’s affairs.
“Then come back tomorrow night. What do you want to eat? I’ll send your stepmother to prepare it,” Tony Cummins said in a paternal tone, causing Grace to be absent-minded for a while.
He was speaking to her in the same tone as when her career and love life were flourishing back then.
However, after she went to prison, everything changed. She realized that she was only his daughter when she was useful, and when she was useless, not a trace of affection was left.
“No, I’ll come after dinner,” Grace said. She then ended the call and put away her phone.
Just as she turned around, she noticed Jason leaning against the door. His eyes were fixed on her.
“Who called you?” he asked as he approached her.
“My father,” Grace answered. “I’m going to go home tomorrow night, so can you ask the driver not to pick me up at the
Sanitation Service Center?”
His eyes glistened thoughtfully. “Do you want me to go back with you?”
She looked at him in surprise. Go back with her? Why would he go back with her? Besides, she was going back to deal with her mother’s affairs.
“No, I can go back by myself,” Grace said. “It’s late. I’m going to bed now.”
In other words, she was asking him to leave.
He narrowed his eyes slightly, bent down, and picked up a strand of her long hair with his fingers. “Why are you so against me?”
She pressed her lips together and gave no answer.
“Then tell me what I must do so that you’ll treat me like you used to.” His breath was fragrant like an orchid, and it sprinkled on her face.
He wanted her to smile lovingly at him and speak gently to him as she had done before. Her eyes used to be full of him as if they were mutually dependent on each other.
Like she used to?
Grace was shocked. “You used to be Jason,” she murmured.
“I can be Jason too. I can be Jason just for you,” he said.
Her heart gave a sudden jerk.
Be Jason just for her? Was that possible?
She should be afraid of him, but why was her heart beating so fast when she heard those words?
He slowly lowered his head, his forehead against hers, “I’ve only said these words to you alone. Will you consider me as Jason again?”
Grace barely slept all night as Jason’s words kept echoing in her mind.
Be Jason again just for her? His expression was so serious that it made her feel like he was not playing around.
“Grace, Sidney is asking me about you. He asked who you are and whether you work in the Sanitation Service Center. He said you had a quite a show yesterday and have some big shot backing you. What happened?” Claire Watts asked Grace as soon as she reached.
The Sidney she mentioned was the organizer of the group of extras.
Since Grace was recommended by Claire Watts, it was natural for Sidney to ask her about it. Claire Watts was completely at a loss when she listened to Sidney talk about what had happened on the set the other day.
If Grace did know some big shot, why would she work as a sweeper at the Sanitation Service Center and even become an extra for money?
“No… Nothing, it’s all over now,” Grace said vaguely. “Claire
Watts, I think I might not be suitable as an extra. I won’t do this anymore. Please tell Sidney that I apologize for the trouble. I’ll quit the group chat later.”
After all, a lot of people had witnessed the scene yesterday. The entertainment industry was so small, and everyone met frequently. If she became an extra again, she would feel awkward. She might as well just stop right here.
It was a pity that she could no longer use this method to earn extra money. As for now, she could only think of other ways to increase her income.
“I see.” Claire Watts could see that Grace did not want to talk about what had happened yesterday, so she did not ask any more questions. She only said, “I’ll talk to Sidney later, but you’d better give Sidney a heads up before you quit the group chat.”
“Will do,” Grace replied.
However, she was more worried about making extra money. After all, she wanted to pay Lina back as soon as she could, and if her grandmother’s medical expenses increased again in the future, it would be very difficult for her.
At the thought of this, she could not help but smile bitterly.
In the past, she only thought that by studying well, she could definitely earn lots of money in the future. However, she was now doing manual labor for money. All the knowledge she gained so many years before and even the laws she memorized were of no use to her now.
She did not know if this was considered as irony.
After getting off work, Grace went to a stall near the Sanitation Service Center for a simple packed lunch.
