Jason stood up after finishing his statement. He gave her a commanding look and turned away
The huge room was as cool as water at night. It was so cold that one could catch a cold!
As soon as Evelyn got home, she heard that her mother had been dismissed from her job and that her father was also demoted from a supervisor to a regular employee!
“How can this be?” Evelyn said in surprise. Both of her parents worked in the public sector, and in this sector, as long as one did not make any mistakes, they would not get demoted at all, let alone fired.
Besides, she was still Brian’s girlfriend! Even if the head of the sector wanted to fire and demote her parents, they should also consider that!
“Didn’t you tell your superiors that I’m now Brian’s girlfriend?” Evelyn said.
“We did. Of course, we did.” At the mention of this, Melinda Riley became very angry. She had told her boss that her daughter was the entertainment industry’s prince’s girlfriend and that in the future, she would marry into a rich and powerful family.
However, Melinda Riley’s Boss ignore matter who your daughter’s boyfriend is, you have to leave today. There’s no room for discussion!”
It really pissed her off.
Who would have thought there would be more! She never stopped showing off to her colleagues that her daughter was involved with the entertainment industry’s prince. When they saw her packing up her things after getting laid off, the colleagues who had once cozied up to her were now making fun of her downfall.
One of her colleagues, whom she often pressured, even ran up to her and said, “Oh, Cuie, isn’t your daughter Brian’s girlfriend? Even if you lose your job, your daughter can fully support you! I just don’t know how long these days will last. I heard that Brian changes his girlfriends very quickly. If becoming his girlfriend means that one can marry into a rich family, just think of how many wives Brian must have!”
Then, several of her colleagues made self-righteous second opinions, giving suggestions as if they were in her best interests.
“Yes. Ask your daughter to get as much as she can now, Cuie. She may not get the chance after a few months.”
“Is it that easy to marry into such a rich and powerful family? Your daughter is not a socialite. The more rich and powerful the family, the more likely the wife has to be of equal social status.”
Of course, she knew that these people were not making friendly suggestions. They were mocking her! She had shown off too much. How could these colleagues not step on her face now?
“When Brian marries you, I must go back to shove it in their faces and show them that I can be Brian’s mother-in-law! I’ll like to see what they’ll say then!” Melinda Riley said furiously.
Evelyn felt a pang of guilt. If it had been before, she would have agreed with her mother, but now… She was by no means certain of it.
These days, Brian only talked to her about her sister. It was as if he was not interested to listen to anything else.
She had been racking her brains to think of all sorts of things to say about her sister.
Even now, she did not understand what Brian saw in her sister! She was just a street sweeper, right? What was there to know?
However, Tony Cummins said, “What’s wrong with our family? I
don’t think we’ve offended anyone. How can all our jobs go wrong at the same time?”
Evelyn suddenly shuddered, turning white in the face. She said,
“It can’t be because of Sis. Dad burned the photo album that day… Could it be that she complained to Jason, so Jason took matters in his hands and attacked our family?”
The more they thought about it, the more likely it was. Otherwise, normal people would have cared that she was Brian’s girlfriend and not dared to harm her family.
Tony Cummins took on a ghastly expression and angrily said, “This unfilial daughter was put in prison and ruined our family. Now she’s going to ruin us again?”
After all, he had gone through many connections and spent a lot of money to get to his position as a supervisor!
How could he accept the fact that he was now back to being a regular employee?
Melinda Riley was furious too. She looked as if she was going to rush out and tear Grace into pieces after finding her.
“Mom and Dad, don’t act on impulse. Sis has Jason behind her now. We should think about what we’re going to do to her.” Evelyn advised. After all, she had suffered a lot from Grace before!
Tony Cummins and Melinda Riley thought about it and agreed. They then said, “What should we do now? Just suffer?”
“I’ll think it over,” Evelyn said. She needed to think hard about how to deal with Grace and not let Grace play an increasingly important role in Brian’s mind.
Otherwise, even if Jason got rid of Grace, Grace would probably take her place and become Brian’s new girlfriend!
She must not let this happen!
Lina Sweeney asked Grace out again and gave Grace the information she had obtained from her colleague, including the witness’s full name, current address, occupation, and even his family members’ names.
Besides, there was information on how the witness had changed his name. It was still the surname ‘You’, but he changed his first name.
“Besides, when your case happened, he was just a regular employee and had a girlfriend, but they broke up because he couldn’t afford a house. Not long after the end of your case, he changed his name, left Emerald City, and bought a commercial-residential building in S City. He paid it off in full, which is a total of five million dollars!”
Lina Sweeney told her what she found, then hummed coldly before saying, “Unless he won the lottery, he wouldn’t have so much money to buy a house and pay for it in full!”
“How did you get all this information? Just by asking your colleagues?” Grace asked, a little confused. After all, judging from the material, some things could not be asked just by making small talk.
Some of the information was very private.
“I asked my colleague for a general idea. Then, I gave the basic information to a private detective and asked the private detective to check it for me,” Lina Sweeney said.
“Private detective?” Grace was shocked. Lina always seemed to take her case to heart. “Then the expenses…”
“You’re asking me about the expenses at a time like this?” Lina Sweeney glared at her best friend. “The most important thing now is to get to the bottom of your case. Don’t ask about the expenses.’
“However, the expenses…”
“You weren’t such a fussy person back then.”
When Lina Sweeney said this, Grace smiled bitterly. Yes. Back in those days, she did not care much about money. Sometimes, when she and Lina were out having fun together, it did not matter who would spend more money, but now…
Was it because life had made her more aware of the importance of money?
Seeing her expression, Lina Sweeney suddenly hugged her. “Grace, I’ve regretted for years that I didn’t help you before. I know clearly that you were wronged, but I couldn’t find favorable evidence for you to help you reverse the case,” she said, word by word. These words had been buried in her heart for a long time.
“Even when you were in prison, I couldn’t do anything except to console you a little when I visited you. I hate this feeling. Now that
I have some clues, I’ll do anything to help you reverse the case.
Don’t think too much about other things, and don’t think you owe me anything.”
