Lina Sweeney’s voice, thick with self-accusation, flooded Grace’s ears.
“Lina, I might not have survived at all in prison without your frequent visits and earnest devotion to my case. Don’t think that your words are an inconsequential consolation. They give me the courage to live,” Grace said, hugging her friend back.
Both women had red eyes now.
After a while, they finally recovered. Lina Sweeney said, “I think I
will ask the private detective to carry and see if we can find anything useful. Don’t alert the witness.
Otherwise, he won’t admit it even if you went and asked him why he gave a false statement.”
Grace nodded and agreed with her best friend.
Besides, after three years, she could afford to wait.
After Grace collected the materials Lina Sweeney gave her, Lina Sweeney said, “I’m driving today. I’ll give you a ride home.”
Grace showed a hint of hesitation.
“Are you still staying at Jason’s place?” Lina Sweeney asked as she realized it.
“Yes.” She pressed her lip a little and felt the part that still ached.
That was where Jason had bitten her.
“How long are you going to stay with him?” Lina Sweeney asked.
“I don’t know.” Grace shrugged with mock relief. “It’s not so bad staying there. At least I’m well fed and well treated.”
Lina Sweeney knew that she could not get a hand in this matter, so she just said, “Let me know if you need anything.”
“All right,” Grace replied.
They walked toward the parking lot as they talked.
“Wait for me here. I’ll get the car,” Lina Sweeney told Grace as they stepped out of the elevator. Her car was parked next to the elevator.
“Sure,” Grace replied.
Lina Sweeney was walking toward a car not far from the elevator entrance. She took out her car keys at the same time. Just then, a car came toward Lina Sweeney and stopped in front of her.
The car stopped just between Grace and Lina Sweeney, so Grace could not see Lina Sweeney.
However, a few seconds later, she heard a startled “Ahhh!” from her best friend and the sound of a car door closing. Then, the black car which had stopped between them pa**ed by her.
Grace hurriedly looks at where her friend had stood moments before. Lina Sweeney was nowhere to be seen!
Could it be that Lina was taken away by the people in the car?!
Grace was taken aback and instinctively ran after the car in the direction it had left, but there was no way to chase after it now!
She only managed to remember the first three and last digits of the license plate number.
Immediately, Grace felt a burst of coldness spreading through her body. What happened? Who the hell were the people in the car? Why did they take Lina?!
Now Lina…
Was this considered kidnapping? Or… Grace subconsciously took out her phone and wanted to call her best friend, but she did not know what kind of situation her best friend was in right now. If she called her, it might make things worse.
Her hands began to shake until they could barely hold her phone.
With difficulty, she managed to dial 110 to call the police.
After reporting the incident, she hurried to the parking lot management office. There were surveillance cameras in the parking lot. There should be surveillance footage of when the car took Lina.
Nothing could happen to Lina, nothing!
That was all Grace had in mind at the moment!
When Jason got a call from Grace, he could only hear sobbing noises coming from the other end.
Just the sound of it made his heart leap instantly. “What happened to you? Say something?!”
“Jason, can you help me find Lina… I’m begging you. Help me find Lina…” Grace said as she sobbed, not knowing whom to go to after calling the police.
Her fingers subconsciously dialed his number… The number came with the phone he had bought her.
Jason frowned. “Did something happened to Lina Sweeney?”
“She was taken away. I don’t know where… The police… The police were here. The parking lot surveillance cameras are broken… Jason, please help me. I beg you to help me find Lina…”
she said, stammering.
He could almost imagine how she was feeling at the moment.
Normally, she would call him Mr. Reed, but now, she was calling him ‘Jay’. This was enough to show what a mess her current state of mind was in.
“Where are you now?” he asked.
“I… I’m in front of the police station…” she replied, choking up.
After she reported the case to the police, she was told she could leave.
However… Lina was not found yet! How was she going to find
Lina?
“Which police station?” he asked again.
When she gave him the exact address of the police station, he said, “Go wait inside the police station. I’m coming over now.”
When he drove up to the police station, he saw her standing on the steps, holding her phone tightly in both hands. Tears were visible on her pretty face. Her eyes were red, and there were hardly any colors in her face.
Although it was almost May, the nights were still cold.
He hurried up to her and took her hand. Sure enough, her hands.
were cold.
The veins on the back of her hand burst as her fingers gripped the phone.
“Didn’t I tell you to stay inside the police station? Why are you standing outside?” His tone was vaguely displeased after seeing that she did not know how to take care of her health and stayed out on a night like this. Did she not know that she could get sick like this?
She trembled and slowly raised her head, almost stiffly, to look at the person in front of her. Her wet black eyes seemed to slowly gain focus.
“Jason, can you help me find Lina?” She seemed to come to her senses just then. She hurriedly said, “The police just filed a case.
They said they’ll send someone to look for her, but they don’t know when they’ll find her. If only I remember the license plate number… Why didn’t I pay more attention?”
There was a note of remorse in her voice.
Jason stared at Grace. He had only ever seen her so anxious when something happened to her grandmother.
Her grandmother was her relative, but Lina Sweeney? She was someone who was not related to her, yet she was still so worried about her.
