“Which of the news?”
Vee frowned a little. “There is more than one?”
Philip chuckled, “You know we have a lot of work in progress.”
“I am talking about me being nominated to go to California.”
“Oh, yes please, and you need to be there by Friday because you have a meeting with three clients. You and I will have a very detailed meeting to discuss the event before you go.”
“About that, do you think another person can go instead of me? Maybe Ashton or Doris. I mean they are also good at what they do too.”
“No, Vee. Of course not. You really need to be there. Not only are you going there to oversee things. There are also going to be a lot of negotiations to be done and we only trust you to strike an amazing deal”
“You can always take Aston or Doris with you. We will make the arrangements so you will have some sort of support over there but you really have to be there, in the company’s best interests.”
“Why do you look so sad about this? This project was your idea. Just that we did not pick. the country you had in mind. The survey we carried out showed that California was the best place. I honestly thought you would be happy about it too as we all are.”
“I…I.. am.”
“I am happy.”
“But you don’t seem like it. If there is anything, just let me know. You know you are like a daughter to me and I respect you so much.”
“Because of my health condition, I was thinking maybe you could approve Ashton or Doris to go and I could stay back here and work along with the person virtually, giving all instructions and doing all other necessary things.”
“But you said you are good now. Or are you still sick? You know you can tell me anything?” Philip looked at Vee with a worried look.
“Not really. I am just getting better and the Doctor says I need to be on bed rest.”
That’s sad,” Philip mumbled, feeling disappointed, thinking for a while.
“But your health comes first and it is very good you consider that.”
Vee nodded.
“In that case, let me know when you want to take your days off for your bed rest. I think we might just have to push this project till you are better because you really have to be there in person to put things in place.”
Vicky’s heart fell, not believing there was no way she could escape this.”
“Anything else? Sorry for the rush, I have some things to deal with in the office before I go home.”
“No, it’s fine. I think….I mean I would just get back to you on the dates.”
“Yes, I would really appreciate that. So I can reschedule with those we are meant to negotiate with.”
“I should get going. Have a good night’s rest and please take good care of yourself.”
Victoria nodded, not knowing what else to say, then Philip took his leave.
She heaved a loud sigh, defeatedly making her way to the car.
Vee had a mind-troubling ride back to her house and the moment she entered her home, she was greeted with a hug from her daughter, Sophie.
Gracie was kind enough to collect her handbag while Vee embraced her daughter well. She picked little Sophie up and pulled her into a hug. “I missed you, Mommy.”
“I miss you too, my baby.” Vee pulled away from the hug, kissing her cheek.
“Are you fine, do you feel good?” She caressed Sophie’s cheek.
She nodded.
“Did you finish your food at school?”
“Yes,” She smiled.
“How well did she do with dinner?” She asked Gracie.
“She said she was not hungry but I was able to persuade her to eat something.”
Vee turned her attention back to Sophie who already had her puppy dog look on her face. “But you made me a promise that you are going to eat your food.”
“I wasn’t hungry Mommy, but I ate the pasta with my juice.”
“Good!” She said, placing a kiss on her daughter’s forehead.
“I would have put her to bed but she insisted she wanted to stay awake and that you had a surprise for her,” Gracie said.
“You don’t forget anything at all do you?” She said with a small smile, directing the question towards her daughter who grinned back at her.
“Where is my present?” She asked excitedly, still in her mother’s arms.
Actually it is not a present but I think you will be excited about the news.”
“My birthday?!”
Vicky genuinely burst into a peal of laughter for the first time in a couple of hours.
“Thank you for reminding me of that. I will get in touch with Lara and Kathie so we can start planning your party.”
“Thank you, mommy.” She smiled.
Vee smiled too, kissing her cheek. For once, it felt as though she was staring at Fedora. Oscar’s elder sister.
“I will go keep this in your room,” Gracie said, referring to Vee’s handbag.
“Yes, thank you.” She gave her a small smile.
“Let’s go over there,” Vee mumbled, proceeding to the living room. She placed Sophic on the couch and sat beside her.
“What is it, Mommy?” The little girl asked when Vicky was not saying anything, rather, she looked a bit consumed by her thoughts.
